Didn't we have him for like 8 years? Is that really considered giving up early? I would think a plausible conclusion would also be that he would just never have turned into that type of player on the Sabres and that he was able to thrive in Minnesota due to their system and with those linemates.

6 years, but same idea. But I was not in favor or the Foligno trade. It was re-shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic.

Buffalo has done a pretty good job of moving on from lower line, pairing players who bring sandpaper. McNabb, Carrier, Foligno, Borgen. Eventually, the Sabres will need those types of players.

For the record, I agree. I liked Foligno. Was more just commenting about us "giving up too early" on him.
Fair. He was here 5 full seasons.

I'll retract the "giving up too early" and agree with the "would just never have turned into that type of player on the Sabres" categorization.

With Savoie playing RW in Rochester, I am really starting to think the plan is to send Benson back, give Savoie some games at RW before sending him back, and then it's waiting on Quinn and maybe PKane.

im not surprised. I didn’t expect Brnson to make the team just for future cap reasons. I want him to understand nhl play to understand what he needs to do,

if you could slide Benson, Savoie, Kulich to 23/34 start thrn thry won’t be RFAs until Skinner ends his contract.
I would expect that Savoie would have to look markedly better than he did in the playoffs for the Amerks last season to get a look with the Sabres.

But, with all the "Savoie will get the Shane Wright treatment" talk, taking Benson's roster spot would seem to be the move that the Sabres are planning to make.

And when comparing Savoie to Kulich/Rosen/Murray/Biro, one big challenge is that none of them have been playing RW, I believe. Plus, Biro is day-to-day and Murray is not off to a great start.

Savoie will replace Benson on the roster for his 9 games try out.
What are the chances Mittelstadt gets signed mid-season, similar to Cozens last year? He has clearly arrived and is frankly one of the team's best 5v5 players.
I think they want to wait until they have a better idea on cap space the next few years.

they might want to wait and see what trade value is on him mid season.

Hard to forecheck when your teammates suck too much to get the puck from the other team, and your coaches implement a stupid ass stretch pass system that requires you to stand still at the opponents blue line in a stationary position.

He was always the player he is now, poor coaching and teammates made him the exact type of undervalued commodity that a smart gm would covet.

(Can you tell that I'm still angry that we got rid of Marcus)

If it makes you feel better, it's starting to look like we did it right back to Minny with Greenway.

What has always been perplexing to me is we got completely and totally embarrassed by the bruins and then to a lesser extent the maple leafs so we decided to beef up...good. we developed McNabb, foligno, Kassian etc (im sure im forgetting someone). Then gave up on all of them. Granted McNabb brought back deslauriers who we also gave up on (perhaps because he was terrible at actual hockey).

That being said moving on from this prototype ofbplayer hasn't in anyway made us more successful. We still sucked but were also pushovers while we sucked which was hard to watch.

Side note I miss Cody Mccormick. He was tough but could also seem to handle a normal hockey shift

Doesnt Cody work at Harbor Center or in Development or did he get canned in 2020 with all the cuts

Its a shame what Granato did to Benson. Gave him all the opportunity in pre-season then stuck him with Krebs and Olofsson two black holes.

I guess he could do it himself but that isn't easy.

What a dumb take.

Skinner thompson Tuch Greenway Mitts Cozens

Would you like to chose one of the 6 that should have been demoted to the third line?

I wouldn't hate this set of lines if you wanted to try and make Benson work:

Skinner-Thompson-Benson
JJP-Cozens-Tuch
Greenway-Mitts-[Help]
Girgensons-Krebs-Okposo

Having the options for that third RW being VO or Jost or Krebs because Quinn is hurt and they are carrying 3 goalies is the biggest problem in the top 9 right now.

5. Cap is tight, rosters are short and organizations like to see what they have. That said, players who teams would like to move (or the players would like it): Joel Armia (Montreal), Conor Garland (Vancouver), Kevin Labanc (San Jose), Anthony Mantha (Washington), Andrew Peeke (Columbus).

I would take Conor Garland over VO.

What did he do to him? His line was with Mittelstadt and Greenway up to the most recent games until Benson got hurt. Considering that was their most effective line but nothing else was working, then it shuffled to see Mitts reigniting Skinner while Thompson is starting to pile in the shots and chances with Cozens and Greenway. He did something that got two lines going.

Edit: and it was Peterka and Krebs, not Vic. They moved Vic to LW with Gus and Okposo. That bothered me so much I pulled into a parking lot to make this edit.

I wouldn’t call this a concern at this point, but we can’t keep everyone. I don’t even mean from a cap perspective, but from a roster perspective. If the Sabres don’t trade a couple of prospects for a player to help now, then they won’t have room for all of their prospects. Mitts is establishing himself as a centre. If he continues the way he is, there will be many teams where he would be a top 6 centre. Maybe the plan is to trade Mitts for picks and to try and keep the pool stocked.

It seems that it needs to be one or the other. Either we move some young guys for an established player or we move an established player for futures. The latter is only palatable if we make the playoffs and contend. Will be hard to justify trading for more future assets if the present has yet to pan out.

You've pretty much laid it out, but I would say that moving a quality roster player for futures right now is so far below the first option that it's not worth considering. Ideally, if any timeline can be attempted for being a Cup contender, it would be before Skinner's contract is up, but most likely and at the very least, while Tuch and Thompson are still in their prime (which actually might still be the same timeframe as Skinner's deal). So we're talking about ideally being a Cup contender in the next 2 or 3-5 years. I don't think we can count on ANY draft pick starting in 2024, and hardly any prospect that might be traded for in the next year or so, being able to be a major contributor to a Cup contender within five years. Great talents to look forward to, but we have quite a few of those already and it's still going to take time for those guys to 1) actually develop into good NHLers if at all and 2) grow into having man strength and experience that matters in the playoffs.

Rhetorical. They played a GOOD game. It's like the Bills threw for 400 yards and only rushed for 3.0 yards per carry and you are like "but the run game though".
Not if the Bills defense allowed 600 yards against and 7.0 yards per carry.

Sabres allowed 17 high danger chances against vs MTL.

Sabres offense only created 8 high danger chances for vs MTL.

And that's a trend for the entire season. Through 7 games we're the 3rd worst team in the league in both high danger chances for % and high danger goals for %.

We've had only 1 game where we created more high danger chances than we gave up. (2nd islanders game)
