Roster Thread (2023-2024 Season)

I'm think more about a player who stands in front and screens, scores effort goals, etc. They might have a lot of rebound goals but the team has no old school power forwards.

It's certainly possible, there's less runway than one might first think. Sabres have 18, top in the league: Boston, has 26.

They're pretty far behind in power play rebound goals. But I think that's a function of how their PP works (or doesn't). Oddly even though Boston is 1st in 5v5 rebound goals, they only have 1 on the PP. This data is quite noisy y/y.

All situations Buffalo: 21 for / 22 against.

I think he’s redundant with Clifton on the roster.

Seems like he would be similar to Jokiharju though with a bit more injury concern. Leans more toward PMD as a defensive measure, gets the puck to safety more so than getting into the attack, etc...

I guess a net front guy could be Murray if they do move both of Okposo and Girgensons. They could see how he works in Okposo's place on PP2 (and I'm sure we will then have to scream into the void that it's as a net front guy, just as we've had to for everyone who complains about Okposo on PP2 has now for most of the year) and offer a screen option. It's one of the things he does well in Rochester.

Assuming the UFAs are moved, that leaves a big hole on a squad that while a longshot, is not mathematically eliminated. Also who chaperones to make sure the kids don’t abuse the frozen yogurt machine?

I see 3 needs:

1. A top 4 RHD
2. Improved PP coaching
3. Improved transition coaching

#3 is still a huge problem. Since switching to a 'defensive' scheme they've become poor at gaining the zone, both with possession and retrieval attempts. Without access to the microstat sites I'd be willing to bet their entry with possession numbers are way down from last year.

Until they stabilize their odd man rushes against they won't be a playoff team.

Overall, 2/3 of these problems can be addressed without affecting salary cap. That's pretty good news; the bad news is I don't think the front office will make staff moves.

EDIT: Found this tweet from december, it's gruesome

Way to sacrifice offense but DEFINETLY have that defense shored up. lol

Rollers are skate guards to go from their locker room in KeyBank to the practice ice in the harbor center
Thanks. You can see that clearly by pausing on Tage. Didn't know such a device existed.

Skinner going old school. Walking and carrying his skates.

OT EDIT: I f***ing HATE roller. I tried it once. Never again. The transition from roller to ice is seamless in comparison. Our best player one season had never played on ice before.

Just as a reference, here is a quick list of Dmen from around the league who are at least conceivable that they would be traded or signable this summer. I included the guys who I think are worth acquiring based on metrics/eye test, loosely.

The NTC's make it more difficult, but not all of the players have them, and we don't know for sure that all of them include Buffalo on their list. Remember that when the lists were set before the season, there was still optimism around the team.

Solid list. While I kinda want to stay young (which can also be cheaper). I feel like a guy like Hanifin is what we need. Not sure he has any drama that comes with him, but that type of skill set anyways. Maybe Chychrun.

Random thoughts:

Look at that though. 4 players from the Flames.
Seth Jones is only 29? Feels like he's been around forever.
Maybe we just get Borgen back.

Sean Walker, who I did not have on my list, was just traded for a late first and a cap dump. Good RD could have played in our top 4. Not signed past this year, but did Adams try on him? Surely, we could have beaten that price.

Hard to know whether he would have signed with us, but could have been had either now or in the offseason. Better than both Joki and Clifton, IMO.

Id look a little deeper at that one.

Sure seems like it puts the Avs in a much better position to trade a D for what they really need - 2nd line centre.

Like Mittsy

Vancouver needs to resign Hronek and add 3 top-6 defensemen.

Garland + Suter would be solid bottom 6 adds.
