Dregs on Sabres live today mentioned the Sabres would like to improve their experience up top and are still interested in Patrick Kane, BUT are really impressed with Benson. He mentioned it is a problem with gm's around the league right now with a influx of young talent.

No offense to anyone here but....penciling in Quinn after a huge surgery like hes gonna come back and be a bonified top 6 winger is nuts. He was barely that last season albeit his rookie season.

Anything he adds down the stretch is a bonus

Quinn playing in Rochester 5 or so games on conditioning.

If they were to keep Benson then a trade needs to happen.

at this point, would anyone be that upset waiving oloffson? Doubt at his current salary would be claimed or he is and then we'd free up 4 mil o space ( in theory could take a salary dump or retention for this year to help someone else out and probably get more than trading VO!)
Not attacking you, but I really don't see where another $~4+M in cap space has any incremental value beyond the ~$9M cap space they have today. i.e., any potential weaponizing of cap space shouldn't need more than they already have given that the retained limit is 50% of an SPC. I can't see them taking multiple contracts, with retention, in trades this early in the season unless there are massive additional injuries and Savoie and Quinn's rehab timelines won't have them ready to play until next year. As the season passes, the available cap space will grow in terms of number / flexibility of deals they could do to weaponize it. So again, no reason to add to it now (or likely later).

==========
If Benson keeps playing the way he has shot out of the gate so far, it will be difficult indeed to send him back. That said, if the Sabres are playing the long game, they may wish to do that just to stagger the 2nd contracts for the youngsters. A reminder: these are good problems to have. Long gone are the Girgensons / Ristolainen rookie days when the talent bar to make the team was so low it was obscured by blades of grass in LaSalle / Ralph Wilson park.

Got no problem with Kane at around 2m for 1 year.

Does nothing to hurt the cap. Low risk-high reward.

At this point waive Olofsson.

Going into the free agency we all knew there were three things Adams had to do.

1. Acquire a steady veteran goalie option so Levi wasn’t the only option.

2. Get a top 4 D so Dahlin and Power weren’t still counted on to take every minute they can while paired with questionable (at best) top of the line partners

3. Replace Quinn so the top six doesn’t fall apart and you aren’t counting on every single player to repeat career years.

What will it take for next offseason to be treated differently?

We have 3 full offseasons of sample size. It will take infinity, because it won't be treated differently.

Patrick Kane

Age: 34

Last season: 21 goals, 57 points in 73 games for the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers

No list like this would be complete without mention of Kane.

He’s the biggest name and potentially the most impactful remaining free agent available, depending on how quickly the veteran winger can get back up to speed following an invasive hip resurfacing procedure in June.

Word is that rehab has gone incredibly well and Kane is progressing toward a point where he’ll be cleared to play. He certainly looked to have regained his mobility in a video released by his agents at CAA Hockey late last month.

As for where he’ll end up signing, that remains an open question.

There has been interest from his hometown Buffalo Sabres and the Florida Panthers, among others, but since Kane has the benefit of time, he’s going to use it.

The current plan is to wait until early November before engaging more seriously with the interested suitors. There should be a little more clarity about the pecking order of the league by that point, and Kane won’t be in a position to return to game action before then anyway.

In the meantime, he’ll continue his rehab work in the Greater Toronto Area.

Just going to repost something I said on another site cause it summed up my thoughts well...

Part of the issue is people thinking we're one or two pieces away from being competitive. You could get the best goalie in the league and he'll still let in 4-5+ goals some nights because this group has no idea what they need to do or where they need to go when the puck isn't on their stick (and sometimes even don't when they do have the puck). Getting another solid top 4 D doesn't stop Thompson or Tuch from turning the puck over for several shorthanded breakaways, or Skinner from giving up on a play to complain to the ref, or Cozens from barely skating and still falling down for the 15th time in a shift somehow.

They need a total commitment from everyone. They're a talented group but they always want to make ten passes setting up the big play, always want to try and walk the puck in through four players, always want to pass the puck to the front of the net knowing damn well no one is there. Make simple, smart plays, hustle, etc. No one player we bring in will fix that. No one coach will change how these players are wired overnight. It's something that the team we currently have need to work on and hopefully incrementally improve this year.

Giving it two more weeks before I open up my weeknight plans for the foreseeable future. Unlike some that more sure, I remained ambivalent about the off-season. The lack of a serious net under seems like a pretty obvious fail. Like EJ as CA locker room replacement. Clifton is a good Bryson replacement. But the roster isn’t better than last season, it actually seems worse. Wait and see has been a pretty bad approach to team building.

how is the best goalie giving up 4 or 5 a night. Levi with the slowest reaction ever caused us to be down 1-0 on a completely worthless effort in the first MINUTE.

By letting pucks in that many times? How can I answer that really lol.

I said some nights btw, not every night.

I think it takes a rare, truly special goalie to totally transcend the team in front of them. I think "the best goalie" might salvage a few games in front of this team as they currently are but there's no doubt in my mind that any goalie we put behind this group will have games like this. Teams just dominate our zone too often and too easily.

Calgary barely did anything in our zone their goalie was just awful too so the score ended up close. Most of their best chances actually came shorthanded thanks to Tage and Skinner giving up uncontested breakaways with horrid passes. Levi's terrible performance cancelled out Vladar's awful performance if we had a good goaltender in last night he would have stole the game from them.

I didn't realize this was the Calgary GBU, my bad.

I'm speaking generally. Don't really want/need to dissect how a different goalie might've handled every shot last night.

The Sabres really haven't given up a lot of chances but now they aren't getting a ton we only lost with 5 goals against once and that was including an EN so far.

I respectfully disagree. I don't really see opposing teams struggling in our zone... maybe it's better than last year so far, I don't really need a statistical rundown, but it fails the eye test for me.

What do the Buffalo Sabres look like when they are trying to play hockey?:

A- A chicken with its head cut off.

B- A Chinese fire drill.

C- A monkey trying to f*** a football.

D- All of the above.

There is typically a reason when new coaches come in, they will often bring in a few vets they've worked with before.

They certainly do need some changes in the forward group, however, I'm not certain they will be able to implement a successful defensive structure under the current coaching staff. They've let them eat ice cream for dinner by letting the players play with zero defensive responsibility for so long. And yes, it's had good on paper results in terms of scoring. But when it comes to actually dialing it in and implementing a solid defensive structure, getting players to eat their spinach after being on an ice cream diet for 2 years.....it's going to be a big ask.

I was just having a similar conversation earlier. Somebody was saying that it looks like the Sabres lucked out with Greenway being maybe better than Meier. And my thought was this team really needs both. I think it’s why late last year the line mix ups worked. Greenway helped Cozens. Mitts helps Skinner.

I forget the cost, but let’s say it was a 2024 first, Rosen, RJ, and VO. Sabres could be looking at lines like:

Skinner - Thompson - Tuch
Peterka - Cozens - Meier
Greenway - Mitts - Benson
Girgs - Krebs - Okposo

I am not saying Adams dropped the ball. It would have been a lot. But this is where the team needs help. And that’s the kind of move this roster is ready for. I don’t know where all these prospects fit over time.

NJ gave up their 2023 1st in the deal.

So, Meier may have cost the Sabres Benson and RyJo+...

They look like a team playing shinny on a nightly basis. There's no competitive structure to the team, they are a team being carried by how the talent is feeling that night only. When they are feeling great, they look formidable. When they are pressured into slowing down or things are clogged up, they will struggle. They are not going to win any games via means of their forecheck system or structure. Which you can probably say about most teams, but you can actually see that stark differences between the team playing loose and the team trying to stay in a structured way of the game.

It's why they came out of the gate vs Tampa so well. Then when Tampa made adjustments you could see them start to lose their grip on the game to the point of wearing down enough to almost handing Tampa the game. Calgary this game stacked the neutral zone when Buffalo was coming up the ice, and you could see Buffalo slow down immediately.

Waiving VO is the obvious move right now. But it would require them to admit that their plan to replace Quinn was dumb. Of course, most fans already know that. VO has scored 3 ES goals in his last 31 games, and two of those were in the meaningless final two games of last season. If he is salvageable at all, he needs to go to Rochester and see some shots going into the net to build up his confidence. Nobody is going to claim him at his salary, and if they do, thank you very much.

On a related noted, Kulich has 28 goals in his last 46 AHL games. Is that good?

Oloffson is a fine 14th forward like Bryson is a fine 7th D. Ideally, we are waiving a goalie and one of Rousek or Biro is keeping the likes of Krebs and JJ accountable in the lineup. In a pinch, Oloffson comes in to fill in a game time decision when needed. But they aren’t waiving a goalie so VO should be waived i guess.
