Oloffson is a fine 14th forward like Bryson is a fine 7th D. Ideally, we are waiving a goalie and one of Rousek or Biro is keeping the likes of Krebs and JJ accountable in the lineup. In a pinch, Oloffson comes in to fill in a game time decision when needed. But they aren’t waiving a goalie so VO should be waived i guess.
Can't we just paper Levi to Roch if we want to have an extra forward (or D) in the mix for a game here and there? Don't really see the three goalies as hindering our overall roster flexibility at the moment.

They look like a team playing shinny on a nightly basis. There's no competitive structure to the team, they are a team being carried by how the talent is feeling that night only. When they are feeling great, they look formidable. When they are pressured into slowing down or things are clogged up, they will struggle. They are not going to win any games via means of their forecheck system or structure. Which you can probably say about most teams, but you can actually see that stark differences between the team playing loose and the team trying to stay in a structured way of the game.

It's why they came out of the gate vs Tampa so well. Then when Tampa made adjustments you could see them start to lose their grip on the game to the point of wearing down enough to almost handing Tampa the game. Calgary this game stacked the neutral zone when Buffalo was coming up the ice, and you could see Buffalo slow down immediately.

I so much agree with what you say.

I truly believe that the Sabres problem is coaching. There just seems to be no structure and way too much pond hockey going on.

I was just having a similar conversation earlier. Somebody was saying that it looks like the Sabres lucked out with Greenway being maybe better than Meier. And my thought was this team really needs both. I think it’s why late last year the line mix ups worked. Greenway helped Cozens. Mitts helps Skinner.

I forget the cost, but let’s say it was a 2024 first, Rosen, RJ, and VO. Sabres could be looking at lines like:

Skinner - Thompson - Tuch
Peterka - Cozens - Meier
Greenway - Mitts - Benson
Girgs - Krebs - Okposo

I am not saying Adams dropped the ball. It would have been a lot. But this is where the team needs help. And that’s the kind of move this roster is ready for. I don’t know where all these prospects fit over time.
Dont forget the 10mil caphit to keep Meier long term

Benson on first line is…interestng.
I try not to worry about what "order" the lines are, just looking at the combinations of guys. I think Benson, Peterka would complement one another's game very well, and Thompson doesn't seem to be showing much chemistry with Skinner and Tuch at the moment that is driving their line, so why not try to find different combos.

EDIT, Meier is only $8.8M AAV.

OK. I see some value in that. But also isn't the point of having a million prospects so that you can have some freedom to take some calculated risks?

According to Spotrac we will have about $25M in space for 24-25. I think we need another power forward in the top 6. Next year between RFA and UFA we have Mitts, Krebs, Jost, Girgs, Okposo, EJ, Joki, Bryson, Comrie. I think we need to keep Mitts, would like to get another year out of EJ, then 2 of Krebs, Joki, Girgenson, Comrie.

That feels doable if you can get Meier and Mitts at $15M AAV.

I wouldn't hate taking a run at Stamkos next offseason.

If Meier would have taken the some contract offer from us that he took from NJ

Looking at upcoming UFA, and assuming they become available: Pesce, Matt Roy and Haakanpaa for D, Francouz or Samsonov for G, Wennberg, Marchessault and Trenin for F.

Skinner - Tage - Tuch
Peterka - Cozens - Marchessault
Greenway - Mitts - Quinn
Girgensons - Wennberg - Trenin
Krebs

Dahlin - Pesce
Power - Roy/Kjell 2.0
Haakanpaa/Kjell 2.0 - Clifton
Haakanpaa/Kjell2 2.0

Francouz/Samsonov - Levi

All for changes but you expect 7 new players next year, and none from their prospects?

Ok, does getting Mitts and Meier at $16M AAV that different than getting them at $15M AAV? Is it "the greatest value?" No. But at this point that just feels like the moral high ground. We have to start creating tangible value.

I am not advocating that we always over spend. But when we have a million prospects who all fill the same role, with the same glaring holes, We also seem to lead the league in cap space year after year. I don't mind dropping an extra $1M on the right player or two at the right time, even if it means less playing time, development, or even a trade of a prospect.

It is sort of the same thing with Ullmark. What are we going to use that extra $1M on, even if he is oft injured? What value is that money providing us by not spending it?

Just going to repost something I said on another site cause it summed up my thoughts well...

Part of the issue is people thinking we're one or two pieces away from being competitive. You could get the best goalie in the league and he'll still let in 4-5+ goals some nights because this group has no idea what they need to do or where they need to go when the puck isn't on their stick (and sometimes even don't when they do have the puck). Getting another solid top 4 D doesn't stop Thompson or Tuch from turning the puck over for several shorthanded breakaways, or Skinner from giving up on a play to complain to the ref, or Cozens from barely skating and still falling down for the 15th time in a shift somehow.

They need a total commitment from everyone. They're a talented group but they always want to make ten passes setting up the big play, always want to try and walk the puck in through four players, always want to pass the puck to the front of the net knowing damn well no one is there. Make simple, smart plays, hustle, etc. No one player we bring in will fix that. No one coach will change how these players are wired overnight. It's something that the team we currently have need to work on and hopefully incrementally improve this year.
You’ll never be one or two pieces away when the plan is to do nothing and remain several away.

You know what would help getting to one or two pieces away? Getting the frigging pieces he should have gotten years ago.

Adams remains years away from knowing what they really need. Because he doesn’t bother to address the obvious ones.

I heard the same damn ”not one or two players away” line this last off-season and the one before that. years where we got 0 players closer due to front office inactivity.

Imagine where we would be if Adams had picked up a piece or two each year. Why…we might even be that elusive piece or two away that we never seem to get to!

and full stop...if you have all the assets and cap space that this organization has had and you’ve overseen 4 offseasons…and you are still not one or two players away? You should be fired.

If they don’t make the playoffs his choices to do nothing year after year should matter to everyone. And he should go do nothing at home.

Pick the best answer

What do the Buffalo Sabres look like when they are trying to play hockey?:

A- A chicken with its head cut off.

B- A Chinese fire drill.

C- A monkey trying to f*** a football.

D- All of the above.

All those things seem urgent. Nothing I saw on Thursday looked urgent!
