From Michael Russo's (covers the Wild) Athletic article this week (warning - might make you sick)....

I know you have mentioned the Wild have interest in Brock Nelson. Would there be any chance of a trade sooner rather than later? Or would this likely be a deadline type of deal?

Right now, unless there’s a third-party conduit and/or the Islanders eat a significant portion of his $6 million AAV, we can’t even fathom how a trade gets done. The Wild have no cap space assuming they don’t have a player on season-ending LTIR at some point. There’s also no guarantee the Islanders trade him. Lou Lamoriello has a history of letting guys walk for nothing. (See: Zach Parise.) So, we have to see what the cap space is as we get closer to the deadline. Also, I really think the Wild are signing him this offseason, so how much do you really want to give up for somebody you can get this summer without getting rid of assets? Plus, remember, the Wild traded their 2025 first-round pick already in the Jiricek deal. — Russo

Who are the 3-5 most likely players, current roster players or prospects, that are likely to be moved should Guerin make a trade for Nelson or someone else?

The Wild have so many players with some level of no-trade protection that it’s not like they have a ton of flexibility here. But since they don’t have this year’s first-round pick, they’d have to deal roster players, prospects or a future first-round pick. Any Nelson deadline deal would require some creativity and the Islanders taking on a chunk of his $6 million AAV. We’ve already talked about how Rossi is a trade candidate if he isn’t signed, though that move would likely not happen until the offseason. They could dangle, let’s say, a Riley Heidt in a deal or an Ohgren or Carson Lambos.

thats your no brainer trade / retain as much as possible , get a 3rd team involved to retain more for a mid pick .

some minney fans lose their mind when Rossi is mentioned but there it is -- Billy wants him signed (no idea why - he's only RFA) . I guess he's worried about offer sheet ?

I really don't see Minny as the best destination. imo the Avalanche really need him - you don't waste time when you have MacKinnon and Makar. Some combo of Ritchie, CAR's 2nd rounder, maybe Jack Drury?

And there are bunch of teams in the east who might like Nelson if they want to take a last shot (Tampa, Boston).

The way Skarek has played in the AHL makes me wonder if we’d be better off with an EBUG.

On a more serious note, seeing these random injuries come up brings me back to one of the concerns on my list regarding our impending UFAs. If we wait too long, and in Nelson‘s case, wait until after the 4 nations tournament, we run the small but measurable risk of an injury eliminating all of his trade value.

You also have the possibility of him scoring big goals, like he is want to do, and setting off a bidding frenzy.

With Pulock and Hoberg on IR, and already down Dobson, it is hard to see this team still competing. You’d also think Skarek will need to start one of the weekend games on the btb, assuming Varly is still out. Based on his play in the AHL, it’ll be interesting to see how that one goes

Jakub Skarek recalled by the Isles. Hogberg and Pulock on IR.
The Pulock thing might force Lou's hand. That's gotta be the last straw, I don't care where they are at the deadline.

They're not going to play him. They're going to run Ilya into the ground again, just as he was starting to get going.

Since they've decided to play Hogberg, Ilya has a .930 save%. He's just not a guy that you can play for 10 games in a row and not expect a dip in his play. We've seen it twice now.

Don't be surprised if we see Lou bring in another goalie with some NHL experience - similar to the Tony D move.

Sad but true.... Soroken has shown time and time again he is a goalie that needs rest.
Lou must sell and retool near the deadline, the next month will prove that.

This should not be seen by Lou as an excuse to take a mulligan on the core he believes in. He did that in 2022 and it still hasn’t worked out yet.

Sell. Take a step back. Reset the roster. Add prospects.
We are going to enter the trade deadline with 3 defensemen who did not start the year in the NHL. Tony Deangelo and Scott Mayfield are going to be our top 2 RHD. Lou must know we're cooked and the amount of injuries we've had should be enough to show ownership that this simply isn't the year.

I don’t think this cholo George pair is for real. I’m surprised Hutton isn’t up yet. I wouldn’t be surprised if they claim someone or make a Bertuzzo type move again.

Lou going to force Roy to run Sorokin into the ground. We'll probably stay close enough to the playoffs where Lou won't sell and then just after the deadline Sorokin will get injured due to overuse, Nelson/Palmieri will still be on the team hurting draft position, and then walk for nothing this offseason.

I just don’t want Lou to cite inuries as an excuse to run it back next year like he did after missing the playoffs in 2022.

That is a very likely outcome in my opinion. Of course not what I would do but likely what Lou will do.

bring up some of the youngster now even on offense. Let's see what they have some we can figure out in the offseason who are we keeping and moving - obviously except for Nelson and Parms who need to go now.
