Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

Small isn’t a problem if you can skate well and defend well enough positionally and with your stick.

He’s never been a great skater and at his size that’s a detriment. If he’s smart with the puck and makes good decisions that’s a plus. I don’t hate the player I just didn’t understand the move at this time when our team is what it is. Thought internally it could have been handled unless they really hate the defenseman in the system lol

Did we just trade for Matt Donovan?

.....the lawyer felt a chill up his spine.......

BOOM.

Friggin jinxed myself. We shouldn't be selling. We're going to the playoffs as bonafide cup contenders. But we need a defensemen so I'm ok with this one.

Yeah to me he’s this years Bortuzzo, won’t be back next year.

DeAngelo might be the perfect low risk high reward for our D corps going forward. Age profile fits with that Barzal Bo Dobson Sorokin core. Can absolutely run our PP. Obligatory, as long as he doesn’t ruin his relationships with dressing room.

I think Roy has seen enough of Bolduc and Hutton to conclude they are not NHL capable defence - hence the flyer on Perunovich. Clearly Lou is not ready to call it quits on the season, or those guys would be up. I'm just hoping he just gives it to the trade deadline then makes the right call
This edition of the Isles is not worth trading an asset for.

Maybe, but a conditional fifth rounder is nothing; I'm all for selling off the UFA's at the deadline, but this pickup is not a bad move in the meantime

now seeing the Capitals sign Logan Thompson for under $6 million per season; that is how you take care of your goaltending and wish our GM had similar instincts/capability.

He's better than NYI's depth options, which tells you about what you need to know. I guess he'll run the #2 PP. Who is going to shift over the the right? Romanov?

I don’t care if it’s a 5th, this team is not in a position to be giving away assets no matter how insignificant.

Not to mention...If you're not going to win the Cup (or even come close to it), then just bite the bullet and suck as much as possible to get a higher pick (and increase your chances of winning the lottery).

With Lou the trades are always average/poor, and thus so are the results.

Pulock and Dobson not looking good. Can we not just bring up Hutton? Mitchell? Even Bolduc?

Kinda weird trading assets for a bandaid

Really liked Perunovich in college and the draft but don’t get doing this.

Plenty of time to recoup the pick

True. The Coyotes dynasty proves the success of that model.

He's an excellent acquisition so long as he keeps his mouth mostly shut. Realistically if we don't win with the present core most of us won't see another Cup run in our lifetime. For me, this is is the last core group I will probably watch that has any chance of getting far to compete for the cup. So I'm all for holding onto whatever talent we have and finding those diamonds in the rough that might take the team to the next level. If this results in Nelson walking away next season then the slow process of tanking for high draft picks begins with this team unable to score goals. Going for the Cup today however slight the probability of winning the championship makes sense because either we get a shot at it this year or next year Nelson and Palms walk putting us in a better position for upcoming drafts ie. suck for luck. Purposely tanking rarely works unless you are Mario Lemieux. The Isles should continue to go for it regardless of the odds.

I'm okay with sending a 5th for this guy. A 5th is a speculative pick. He's fairly young and a speculative pickup, so seems like a wash.

I see he had 40 points in 34 games his last year in the NCAA. And he had 42 points in 39 AHL games. And 8 points in 10 games at the WCs. If he was a forward prospect for us we'd have him near the top of our annual polls.

When are we going to trade for younger, more skilled players?

So, we do . . .

Why are we wasting an asset?

Guys, it's a conditional 5th for a defender with 2G/27A in 97 NHL games and a career +.

What are the odds we do better than that with a 5th most years?

LLDS is alive and well here. This isn't a big deal.

He WON the Hobey Baker award, how bad could he be?

You were touting superstar Mikko Rantanen, who was a 10th overall pick. If the draft was today we'd have the 9th pick. No need to tank. ;)

"At even strength this season, the Blues allowed just 2.04 expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA.60) with Perunovich on the ice, according to Natural Stat Trick. This was the third-best mark on the team, surpassing defensive defenseman Colton Parayko (2.5 xGA/60).

Notably, Perunovich’s 2.04 xGA/60 also outpaces all current Islanders defensemen and ranks in the 89.4th percentile among NHL defensemen."

The last Hobey Baker awardee on this team was Jason Blake?

Edit: he was a finalist. So this guy actually winning it might mean something. Cale Makar won it the year prior. Pretty good company to keep.

BTW he was a figure skater as a toddler prior to switching to hockey. He should fit right in. Unleash him!

I know's its only a 5th...but it's a dumb move. Bring up:
  • Bolduc -24, playing better of late has 19pt in 38 games this yr. #1 pt man on the power play down there
  • Mitchell - 25, 6'4 205 , had a good camp, putting up better numbers from last year in Bridgeport
No, lets bring in a 5'10 defenseman who can't play defense.

The only think I can say about this trade is:
Just because you are on an NHL roster, does not mean you have "NHL" talent. :sarcasm:

Hope you understand my thoughts of my Isles making this deal.

This is interesting. Puckpedia has him as an RFA and Spotrac has him as a UFA.

This is why we miss CapFriendly so much. :(

Actually to become a UFA any offseason you have to turn 27 of that offseason. Perunovich doesn't turn 27 until August 18th so as far as I can tell he'll be an RFA for 1 more year.
