I don't know why you are dismissing top 5 picks that were traded. It's the pedigree that matters, not who picked them.
I agree, but isn't this an argument against the need to tear it down and tank? Compile assets and try to get a former top 5 pick via trade or signing?

The Flyers and the Yotes, to a degree Buffalo, make this difficult to desire. Even the Oilers. The management was so bad that they did little with the picks or didn't develop what they had. The boy genius in Arizona did a dreadful job.

If a retool of some sort is needed, then the decision on Lou comes first. And I am not saying Lou is not competent or capable of running a club. I'm not sure however he would be your guy to oversee a retool.

Gotta post - RIP Rickey Henderson. He was an all-time great. Better than folks remember and doesn't get his due. Greatest leadoff hitter on any era.
Absolutely
Ricky could hit, hit for power, obviously steal bases(not like this crap they have now)
And Ricky always lead the league in 2 things
Talking trash
And talking about Ricky in the third person

It's a way to get them, sure, but look at the Islander's history of elite free agent signings. There isn't any. As for trades, it's possible but you generally need like assets with which to make such a trade. Think Turgeion/LaFontaine. In short, you have to give to get and who really benefits? Both guys continued to be great for their respective teams. The reason I am so adamant in my position is precisely because the Islanders are who they are and the history is what it is. Elite FAs don't choose to come here and it is proven that you need at least one, super-elite, HOF quality player in order to win championships. How will the Islanders get one or more of those? The draft, and in the draft those players are found in the top 5. Are other elite players found in later picks, sure, but it becomes far less likely. Literally the only time in this franchises history that you could call it great is when it was built from the ground up. It sucks that those limitation are our reality, but ignoring them or acting like they don't exist or thinkng that you can finesse and system your way around that reality only leads to more mid. I'm sick to death of watching mid. And generally boring mid at that.

People want to upgrade the talent, well, the crapshow in Vancouver is where to get that opportunity to get a player like EP40.
Why and who would you trade for that contract?
Hes clearly a declining asset, with a bigger commitment than anyone on our currently over paid/over committed roster

Who’s laughing after trading for an elite guy with a botched neck? Vegas or Buffalo?

I assume that the basis for your comment is along the lines of "new lease on life" and "change of scenery" from a bad situation. If that is what you meant I would agree in Eichel's case. But Pettersson is not Eichel. While Pettersson still has world class skill comparable to just about anyone, nothing in his game suggests the kind of drive and fire in the belly that also makes the greats what they are. Just a guess, but I think that's what pisses Miller off so much about him.

We went from elite to great. There’s few greats. A player like a Pettersson comes along and may be available, a team like the Isles needs to make that move. You take the risk, that’s what Vegas did. My reference to Eichel was less his Buffalo situation, more on his neck surgery - Vegas was willing to take him on (and he didn’t even play post-acquisition) for the upside. There was a lot of downside too.

Horvat already knows whether he’s the right guy or wrong guy or the problem.

Who knows what the issue really is, but Miller has a past of not getting along with teammates under the guise of being ‘competitive’ - maybe some players just don’t jive with that behavior and it impacts how they play.

Apparently they want RD, I’d ship out Dobson++ in a heartbeat for him.
I would make Barzal or Dobson the focus of that deal. Even better is Isles have to add salary to offset the cap so another player is going in either deal, which again, is good in moving on from some of these guys.

With 6.6 B in HRR - the league and PA will agree to go over the 5% max increase. There was already speculation it can be as high as 96m.

I figure 18m to sign all RFAs that with current contracts that is 82.2 with 20 man roster and Engvall buyout. 5% max would be 92.5, leaving 10.3 in cap space. If they go as high as 96 - the cap space could be 13.8, if they go somewhere in between that is roughly 12m.
Dobson is turning it around and will score 50 for a fourth straight season. I imagine something around 7.5 x 7. Romanov seems like 6x6 or so.

Tsyplakov and Holmstrom both pacing for 45-50 points and just got put on a line with Horvat. Something around 4x4 each feels right, so I think maybe 18 is slightly low

Playing around on Puckpedia, we could easily add Marner. Seeing the Ducks need for a middle 6 vet, Pageau would work there. Cizikas I could see working in a similar boat elsewhere, maybe Seattle who might lose Tanev. Buy out Engvall. Romanov could be locked in long term but low rate given his lack of offense. Let Nelson and Palms walk and there's a lot of cap. Sign Kerfoot as a cheap 3C, he's buddies with Marner. 12.5x7 for Marner and we add a 90+ point player. Give me the Russian forward Shabanov and I'm loving the skill injection. Then I'd throw a big contract to Mathieu Olivier too. Could all work with a rising cap. Kuzmenko could be a good cheap add too.

The team that played last night could beat anybody in the league.
It’s worth noting that in the games before Duclair and Barzal went down, they were HEAVILY out chancing the other team. Just weren’t scoring. That combined with the third period collapses made the team seem horrendous.

All of the pieces are there when healthy. The additions of Tsyplakov and Duclair, the emergence of Holmstrom, and especially the resurgence of Lee and Pageau makes this team incredibly deep when healthy. Having to deal with one of Barzal, Horvat or Nelson on the ice for 80% of the game is hard to match up against.

Hate to say it because I really think they need to trade Nelson and Palmieri, but they could make a run.

People want to upgrade the talent, well, the crapshow in Vancouver is where to get that opportunity to get a player like EP40.
Dobson and Nelson for EP40 and Desharnais. We would need to figure out a new ppqb but it’s not like it can get any worse

I'll add something worth talking about, I wonder if anyone player works with Lou for deferred salary. Lowers cap hits. Could help!
