I don't know why you are dismissing top 5 picks that were traded. It's the pedigree that matters, not who picked them.
I agree, but isn't this an argument against the need to tear it down and tank? Compile assets and try to get a former top 5 pick via trade or signing?

Brock Nelson hasn’t scored a goal in 12 games. I’m starting to get mildly concerned about diminishing trade value.
I think he has enough of a track record that teams won’t shy away because of a cold stretch or even a down season. Multiple teams are always looking for top six scoring come deadline time.

The Flyers and the Yotes, to a degree Buffalo, make this difficult to desire. Even the Oilers. The management was so bad that they did little with the picks or didn't develop what they had. The boy genius in Arizona did a dreadful job.

If a retool of some sort is needed, then the decision on Lou comes first. And I am not saying Lou is not competent or capable of running a club. I'm not sure however he would be your guy to oversee a retool.

Gotta post - RIP Rickey Henderson. He was an all-time great. Better than folks remember and doesn't get his due. Greatest leadoff hitter on any era.
Absolutely
Ricky could hit, hit for power, obviously steal bases(not like this crap they have now)
And Ricky always lead the league in 2 things
Talking trash
And talking about Ricky in the third person

People want to upgrade the talent, well, the crapshow in Vancouver is where to get that opportunity to get a player like EP40.

It's a way to get them, sure, but look at the Islander's history of elite free agent signings. There isn't any. As for trades, it's possible but you generally need like assets with which to make such a trade. Think Turgeion/LaFontaine. In short, you have to give to get and who really benefits? Both guys continued to be great for their respective teams. The reason I am so adamant in my position is precisely because the Islanders are who they are and the history is what it is. Elite FAs don't choose to come here and it is proven that you need at least one, super-elite, HOF quality player in order to win championships. How will the Islanders get one or more of those? The draft, and in the draft those players are found in the top 5. Are other elite players found in later picks, sure, but it becomes far less likely. Literally the only time in this franchises history that you could call it great is when it was built from the ground up. It sucks that those limitation are our reality, but ignoring them or acting like they don't exist or thinkng that you can finesse and system your way around that reality only leads to more mid. I'm sick to death of watching mid. And generally boring mid at that.

Why and who would you trade for that contract?
Hes clearly a declining asset, with a bigger commitment than anyone on our currently over paid/over committed roster
