With a total rebuild, you have to hit on most of your prospects, otherwise you become Buffalo.
Many teams do this, picks don't pan out and remain in the cellar...
We need a retool of our Core, not to rip it down completely imho.
Buffalo is the only team who hasn't made the playoffs in the past decade. All other 31 teams have, including numerous rebuilding teams.

The Sabres are the exception, not the rule.

They also probably would have made the playoffs by this point if not for an oddball situation where their star forward demanded a trade.

I know many of our players have trade protection but maybe some would rather play past April this year. I could see

Varly back to Colorado
Pelech to Edmonton
Pageau back to Ottawa or Dallas or something

Time to sell off UFA's.

Excuses....
How far down do you wish to tear it down?
Want Lou to make the picks we get?
How about we agree on getting the GM. in place before we have the fire sale?
I For one do not want Lou doing that.

It's not rocket science, really. You replace Lou and then trade Nelson and Palmieri this season, and Lee, Varly and Pageau the next. Should give the new GM plenty to work with in draft pick and prospects, as well as cap space. The main issue is finding the right guy to do it.

See if Minnesota wants any or all of Lee/Nelson/Palmieri and go from there at the TDL..I have to imagine it could be mutually beneficial for the MIN boys Lee/Nelson to accept a trade to play in the playoffs with their home town team.

You might want to check Salary Cap realities for those three to those teams.

Currently 6th worst in points percentage! 4th most losses in the league. We may actually get a shot at Hagens. Or we could make the playoffs (3 points out). The world is truly our oyster

Hagens, Martinez, or Misa. It’s not a bad year to have a top 3 pick.

Hopefully Nelson and Palms keep producing and net us a good haul at the deadline.

Well there are zero signs that Malkin will do this so it just might be rocket science to him.

So the fan in me results in my inability to ever be an effective GM, even in the theoretical sense. I'm a big fan of Varly, Nelson, and Palmieri, and don't want to trade them away.

It's a shame because Nelson and Palmieri can still produce and two of the the better players when healthy. Issue is they aren't some young and up and coming prospects you build around. And a smart GM without emotion/fanship knows you won't get a decent return for a shit player. So trading older guys who are doing well makes the most sense, especially pending UFAs. I also get it's better, at least based on potential return, for the long run.

As fan I'd like to resign them both and keep them around for a few years.

I'm gutted we couldn't make it to the Cup after making it to the ECF twice. If you told the kid watching the late 90's Isles that they'd sniff the ECF, I'd laugh. But now to see that, fall short, and know it's far away again is sad.
