This was not a typical Mayfield year. He had a bad season. If he would sign here for between 4 and 5M for 4 years I'd bet on him playing better next year.

I don't even think he's had a bad year, he's had a slump lately. Everyone ebbs and flows during the course of a season unless they're McDavid. I'm interested in what Mayfield does in the playoffs, that's where he's had success in the past and what I'd be paying him for in the future.

So Lou hasn't really improved the team the last 2 seasons. Lou needs to reassess his plan for the Islanders. Isles ownership must not use long road trips, Covid shutdowns, unfairly being forced to play with a decimated roster, injuries as a crutch this summer and see this team for what it is...middle of the pack with not enough skill to compete with Eastern Conference heavyweights.
I think it’s gonna be more carving out the roster. They have offensive gems coming up the rear. Maybe that Dufour kid. Maybe.

This playoff will demonstrate whether Lou’s approach is sufficient for the owners. The deeper they go, the more validation in Lou’s favor. Maybe the fans don’t like it, but advancing to the second round will keep the fanbase on the hook.

400 games seems kind of low, injuries really derailed his career.
Last year there was a post criticizing Lou for making the Horvat pick for Schneider trade. I countered with the fact that Schneider was the same age, and had similar numbers in more games played for Vancouver; than Ilya Sorokin did for the Isles at the time of the post. Yet, no one would have traded Sorokin for the ninth pick of last years draft.

Anyway, it just goes to show how well thought of Schneider was around the league. If not for injuries he would likely have been a top five goalie year-over-year.

While where at it, during that same draft... Neiderreitter for Clutterbuck. I say ultimately it was a win for the Isles long-term... So fight me!

Neiderreitter has had the more productive career than Clutterbuck. But what was seen as a massive steal by the Wild, became nothing more than solid second line production whose franchise impact was further diminished by moving on after only four years.

Ultimately, this guy was a better goal scoring Josh Bailey, with replaceable offensive production... provided you're a legitimate enough franchise to sign such production.

What's he say? Don't have audio at the moment.
Take out all of the usual fillers... umm, ahhh etc. You essentially get:

We'll see what happens.
I have one more year.
Gotta look at it that way.
I got one more year, and that's all I can say about that
Basically, sounded like a player who didn't want to commit to a solid answer. But mostly it was the complete lack of enthusiasm about re-signing.

They're in such a weird position because nobody wants to play for Sutter, but they just re-upped him. They need to fire him before they lose more players.

Or the team doesn’t want to pay players, unless it’s desperatation.

Paychuck and Johnny Trademark got paid big time bc of their play under Sutter.

European UFAs:
We were rumored to be in on this guy, but then the info came out that he had been signed by San Jose.

Now I just saw this:

So I wasn't keen on trading for Klingberg back in March, but how do we feel about him come July?

He’s gonna be shopping to make up for lost money, so it’s really the highest bidder for him. I doubt the Isles are the one.

Ideally, Isles sign Orlov, but he probably wants a top 4 role (and should). Trade Pulock for offense maybe PLD?, sign Orlov. Sold.

If we're trading Pulock, it makes sense to chase Ehlers

I don’t understand why we’re talking about trading defensemen when our defense is hot garbage. We need to add a defenseman not subtract. The flip side to this is that the offense is also hot garbage, and we have an awful prospect pool, hence why this team needs a rebuild.

The defense needs to watch tape of Leddy and Toews skating the puck out of the defensive zone and through the neutral zone during their time with the Islanders and try to emulate that as much as possible.

Only then will the defense go from hot garbage back to being a strength of the team again.

You’re telling me Aho, Dobson, and maybe Pelech and Romanov can’t do what those guys did?

Yes, Leddy and Toews were tremendous skaters which gave them the confidence and likely leash from the coaching staff to do what they did, but to me it’s more of a mindset than a skillset.

If I was the coach of the New York Islanders (which I’m not but should be), I’d be showing my defensemen tape of the standard at which defensemen who don the Long Island crest should play. It sure as hell ain’t what I’ve seen under Lambert…

Do we want him? Sure I could do a deep dive into the interwebz to find out more about his game, but I'd trust what you say more than anyone else anyway, so figured I'd wait for your take.

In general, when you make as few selections in the draft as we have in recent years, there's reason to add from the outside when the opportunity comes.

Is Pulli someone worth investing a 2-year ELC in?

Well, he's real big and moves real well for being a big kid. We have a similar Finn in the system named Rajaniemi, but Pulli is contributing more while only being slightly older (now 22).

I'd certainly like to see a player of this nature added, but I can't say he's going to be an NHLer. A lot would have to happen in his first AHL season to even get him in top 8 consideration the season thereafter.

Will a team add him?

I'm pretty certain he'll be picked up by someone. There's too many raw possibilities there right now not to give him a look. And there are other teams out there that haven't done a lot of drafting lately.

ASIDE:
The NYI added Fulp and Mitchell. Gotta think they're done with adding UFA Dman prospects.

To lessen the amount of hot garbage?

So we’re going to trade away all the bad players and acquire good players. Explain what these trades would look like and how we would be enticing other teams to participate in them.

Sweeteners. We just won’t have a 1st round pick until your kid gets his driver’s license.

Oddly enough, I don’t think Barzal has trade protection in the first season of his extension. Him and Dobson are the only trade chips this team has…

The Devils took a goalie used to platooning in Vancouver and just ran him into the ground. He needed to have a better partner, who allowed him to ease into such a heavy workload.
