Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2023-24: Hotel California

He needs to sign long term by the trade deadline of his UFA year if he wants to stay LT.

No more of this "we'll talk about it in June" stuff.
It's a very different situation because we all can understand the parameters here. It's in both the team's interest, and Barzal's interest not to do a contract until they see how he, and the team performs. I think the whole league sees the talent, the question is whether he's working out with how NYI intend to play. If it's not working out by the deadline this year, I expect they'll be shopping him out west. If it is working out negotiations will begin in earnest.

Book it.

We'll denote this.

Can't see them going this righty-righty combo when they actually need a "mobile" lefty next to Mayfield.

ASIDE:
I sure hope you're not thinking this just because Hutton gave a quote in that piece by Rosen stating that he sees a spot open and is going to give his all for it... ;)

If Hutton isn't waiver exempt, I think he should make the roster. I don't see any point carrying two similar lefties (out of Aho, Salo, and Cholowski). But that's as a 7th D.

No I've thought this for a while, plus he did say he only played the left side growing up and has been training on the left side to make himself more versatile.

What is really comes down to is that I believe Salo likely starts in BPT since he is exempt from waivers. That leaves Aho, Hutton, and CholoCop as the candidates for the last two D spots. I'm expecting CholoCop's documented weaknesses to show in camp, leading him to getting waived and between Aho and Hutton I prefer the latter.

Sounds perfectly logical

When GF Hutton talks, people listen.

I think Hutton has a shot to make the roster, but as a 7th more likely. He'd be able to slide in for one of the RHD if necessary, and if he can play the left side in a pinch all the better. But I don't see Lambert having a regular RHD-RHD 3rd pair of Hutton-Mayfield.

Also, I wonder to what extent Cholowski's documented weaknesses also apply to Aho? And Aho has the size issue as well....

My guess is that they're hoping Salo comes in and forces them to pencil him in with Mayfield.

From Kevin Kurz “One league source familiar with Cholowski’s career said that in the past he has “lacked heart to improve his overall game”.”

I don’t think Aho lacks heart, he just lacks size and strength.

Regardless I agree that Hutton has a really good chance to make the team even if they defer to the more experienced Aho or CholoCop next to Mayfield on opening night.

And with the way these two skate, I could see a number of forwards breaking by them on the outside - on both sides.

From what I've read and seen, Cholowski's defensive game appears to be lacking considerably. And as others mention, it all seems to be on him. It's not like the physical tools aren't there. Seems like he just hasn't been willing to do what it takes to effectively defend at this level.

Things get a bit different when he has the puck on his stick. And mobility isn't a problem.

Aho has his limitations - quite a few in fact - but I don't think we can claim (not that anyone has) that he isn't giving it his all and throwing what little weight he has into things. He definitely keeps busy, and he's built differently than Hickey, but there's only so much he can do.

And that handicaps the team.

My guess is that they're hoping Salo comes in and forces them to pencil him in with Mayfield.

They certainly haven't made it simple for him.

Somehow, I'm glad there's a bit of competition for this spot even if I spent all summer wanting to see an established NHLer brought in.

INTERESTING:
Aho was actually on pace for a good 25 points last season.
