This is, pound for pound, maybe the worst situation in the league. A team with many players in various stages of decline, who almost to a man have NMCs, tight to the cap, with the worst farm system in the league.

There's nothing here but the continued decline, the slow slide to the bottom of the league and then, in a few years, the inevitable rebuild!

It's what Lou did to the Devils. And he did it here. Because he's an awful GM

I'm not in any way suggesting this, just spitballing, but I'll bet the Devs would jump at a Sorokin-Pelech package and give us their 1st this year plus lots of other goodies. Then flip JGP and one of the 1st picks (ours or the Devs) for Pinto. Find some 1b goalie to play with Varly next year. Get a top 4 PMD to replace Pelech (which would give us 2 PMDs in the top 4, which we really need). Of course, without a GM change this is academic since Lou would give up crusty bread, red wine, anisette cookies and Sanka before he'd make that deal.
I think the idea of moving Sorokin is the right way to go about it - but not sure I'd want to move him in division; I'd hope to get just as good of a package out of division, preferably out west.

I agree - just having some fun. And yeah, Sorokin will be elite again - I don't doubt that. He's been exhibit A in my argument against a rebuild going back to when others advocated trading him away for picks/prospects! ;)
I am not convinced he'll be elite again, goaltending is the most unpredictable position. I think he likely still has a lot of value around the league and may be the best chip we have to retool (rather than rebuild). This team needs a goalie to steal every other win for them, and it's not an overly enjoyable experience to watch a team get outplayed pretty much every game hoping like hell the goalie steals the game.

Yeah, every fanbase wants to move out their underproducing, old players with fat contracts.

None of the other 31 teams want either of these players.
if you're lucky you can pawn JGP off by retaining a million; with Lee, I don't see any alternative but a buyout

An absolutely crushing loss.

I saw a pathway that was so clear - I even came in so hot when @beach questioned if they would get into the playoffs during the winning streak.

13 games left and the Math is tough, especially when they are disjointed and how do I say it - they suck.

It’s really not.

Trade Barzal to Anaheim (Mctavish/Zellweger) or OTT for Tkachuk.

Sunset Clutter and Martin. Play McLean and add a UFA signing.

Trade Pulock for offense, right D are always in demand.

Buyout Lee or swap bad contract with another team.

always happy to hear the reason why it doesn't make sense to think about it as an option

He's been a top tier goalie more than he hasn't been, that's why. If you're trading Sorokin you might as well trade everyone and start over. If that's what you want to happen, fine, but that's just not going to happen.

Would be an interesting offseason poll to see who we would vote to keep or dump . We have no prospects so not much to vote on with that

Maybe not the absolute worst, but pretty close.

But just for arguments sake, what is it you think the Isles would then be from a competitive standpoint if everything you suggest here was accomplished?

Horvat can thrive without Barzal.
Barzal cannot thrive without Horvat.

Build your roster accordingly.
I don’t see Horvat thriving with anyone other than Brazal on this team. Horvat strikes as needing talent to bring out the offence he has.

Barzal does the same thing no matter who he plays with which is skating around with the puck not always doing anything

Are people really advocating for moving Horvat, Barzal, or Sorokin? We have no secondary scoring on this team. This isn't NHL 24 if you start moving major team pieces who recently resigned it sends a message to the rest of the league to not come here. It's taken a long time to wash the damage Milbury and Snow did to the reputation of the team (and it's still not all gone yet)...why set that back?

I understand this view, but disagree that moving Sorokin means starting over. There are many teams above the Isles in the standings, legitimate cup threats, that do not have Vezina level goaltending (assuming for the moment that's what Sorokin provides, which I do not think he does). He would bring back a good piece that would help now, and the new GM would have to bring in an adequate level replacement. But I get it; it would be a bold move and highly unlikely to happen.

I just don't see Sorokin in the same realm of the conversation as Horvat or Barzal; he's much more easily replaced than either of them. As for the reputation of the team, winning is how you build reputation, and keeping guys to put out a losing team does more harm to reputation than whether you move recently signed pieces. (Again, stressing I don't think we should move Barzal or Horvat)

Not sure what you're saying here Leap. Is it that the Isles had a bunch of top 15 picks and using them led to the current state of mediocrity....Or are you saying that using 1st rounders to trade for veterans that also led us here?

Either way I'd certainly argue that snow totally shat the bed in terms of using all those top 10 picks he had. The Barzal trade doesn't take away that this guy draft Reinhart, as well as Strome and Dal Colle all in the top 5.
Point is it's a crap shoot and there's no one right answer.

For everyone:
I'm done for the season. Catch ya for the draft. Have a good spring gents!

Cool. Our answer to Matt Rempe.
He’s going to be so popular though, he is a complete jerk to play against. He is penalty killer and I think he will be a guy who fights, he’s not big but he to me can be put on a 4th line in NHL and contribute a lot of energy. He got an NHL deal so clearly there was interest around league.

Nothing is really sticking at this point. Why not, unless the isles really do not believe in him
I’m personally not believer in Iskhakov, not a scout at all but watch most of Bridgeport games. He just isn’t explosive enough to overcome his size 5 on 5. He is classic Ahl-European league player IMO. Maggio is good but he’s not even close to being ready to play here even if it’s for a look at end of year. It’s interesting Jeffries hasn’t signed nhl deal yet, I think he plays a few in Ahl and if he scores like he does in college I think we could see him maybe.
