The identity line is dead and it's fine. Roy is not a coach in the mold of Trotz who needs to roll 4 lines. Not sure McLean is an ideal 4th line center but prefer him as a 12/13 over Fasching or Gauthier for sure. Would like to see some grit put back in the equation as Martin and Clutterbuck are replaced. Moving on from those two and possibly JGP would benefit the team. Don't think we will see Engvall depart and Pelech is a player who is tough to gauge. Is he substandard due to injury, system or both?Lee should not be playing with Barzal at this point and probably not up for extended minutes. Nelson, Barzal, Horvat, Holmstrom and in some cases Palmieri can handle it.
Lee, Pageau, Holmstrom, and arguably Nelson all have not been good as of late. Barzal works best with Horvat and its clear that the 29-14-13 line should've stayed intact. What worries me is that we still have at least two more years of Lee. We have to get rid of that contract eventually.

Barzal cannot thrive without Horvat.

I say scout better, draft better and develop prospects better. The children are our future.
i feel like it isn't a problem for the islanders to draft players: its getting them to the Island and making sure that they can BECOME the quality caliber players that we hope they can be. I.e we need to be more like Tampa/Carolina/St.Louis/Boston. I really hope our next FO hire is from those teams.

Am i hoping that we see an entirely younger islanders team next year? absolutely. But do we *realistically* see all of Dufour/Maggio/Jeffries/Ishakov/etc making the roster? Not at all. We are going to need Bridgeport to become a better AHL organization period.

I'd say we've done well without the 1st the last 4 years:

2023 - Danny Nelson, Schulz

2022 - Odelius, George, Maggio

2021 - Raty, Berg

2020 - Jeffries, Dufour, Tikkanen

Barzal can't thrive without a finisher who can skate, but that doesn't mean it has to be Horvat.
Isles need more wingers now. Hilarious.

Any Isles GM should spend the next 8 years collecting wingers to play with one player. Maybe, get rid of that player and focus on building a team of players that can play across multiple ones. Seems to have worked for WPG.

Does not make sense when Bo Horvat's career high in points pre Barzal was 61 points when this season Bo Horvat eclipsed his high with 62 big ones in 67 games playing majority of the time with #13. Last year Horvat had 16 points in 30 game playing mostly without #13. C'mon fellas

Yes, #13 sucked lately.
Very simple put and 100% spot on.
No doubt Barzal has sucked lately. I suspect he will pick it up very soon, Kid does have fire in his belly unlike other NHL stars

I'm not in any way suggesting this, just spitballing, but I'll bet the Devs would jump at a Sorokin-Pelech package and give us their 1st this year plus lots of other goodies. Then flip JGP and one of the 1st picks (ours or the Devs) for Pinto. Find some 1b goalie to play with Varly next year. Get a top 4 PMD to replace Pelech (which would give us 2 PMDs in the top 4, which we really need). Of course, without a GM change this is academic since Lou would give up crusty bread, red wine, anisette cookies and Sanka before he'd make that deal.

I've been one of the more vocal people about Sorokin's performance this season and I think it's a very bad idea to move on from him. This should be the worst he is (if he's healthy) and he's still in the "good" category compared to other NHL goalies around the league.

Cutting bait on Sorokin after 1 bad year would be a dumb thing to do. There’s too much upside to him.

Now if you wanted to trade Barzal…:sarcasm:

Other than Horvat, Snow and Lamoriello haven’t been able to find one for him. This is Barzal’s 7th full year in the league. I’d say half his career is gone already. Time for everyone to just make the best of who he is.
Imagine Barzal with Horvat AND Doug Weight??

Good info and thanks for posting. I wonder if the revenue and expansion projections are a bit optimistic.

As for the isles, of course I love the idea that the cap may go up substantially. We’re still left with the same problem though. UFAs view us as a second tier choice.
Yes, we can buy out the occasional lousy contract, but if the only new blood getting infused into the squad is via trade then these deals require continued depletion of the prospect pool and draft choices.

It’s certainly not black or white. We can do those deals now and then but you have to give value to get it in return. I don’t buy the narrative that since we have whiffed on a number of top five draft picks that drafting is a low value proposition.

I say scout better, draft better and develop prospects better. The children are our future.
This late into the season - the league has pretty accurate data on HRR revenue and no reason for the league to lie about that - optimistic is really fact, especially when everything hinges on 50% share - revenue and salary.

Expansion fees 500 m for Vegas, 750 m for Seattle, and 1 Billion for Salt Lake and Atlanta - a big reason for this is looking at the valuation of teams - what Ottawa went for - what Arizona will go for + the relocation fee if the team is moved.

If anyone is surprised that Houston is not in on this - its because Fertita does not like the expansion fee and may prefer to be a relocation spot - this is according to EF. IMO, if the league does not feel good about the June 4th decision in Arizona, then Fertitta buys Arizona and moves them to Houston.

NHL will go back to Arizona like they did Atlanta and Arziona may be team 35 with 36 as a dog fight between Quebec City and KC, Milwaukee, OKC, Omaha, Cincy, and possibly Toronto 2.

Hockey in Omaha. I’m not saying it will never happen, but I will say it’ll never be successful.

If it were a stock, I’d short it.

Milwaukee, QC, and Toronto 2 make the most sense - but the Canadian Dollar - albeit there is a push for an 8th Canadian team and the small market of Milwaukee and KC - so that team 36 could be a wildcard.

The reason for all this HRR and Expansion talk is to highlight the Cap crunch days are on their way out, so buying out someone or retention may not be so crazy to help improve this roster...

Guentzel is the high prize and it is unlikely Lou lands him without a serious overpay, so my sights go on 2 players who fit Roy's style
Marchessault - coached by Roy in juniors and DeBrusk - who brings speed and tenacity -

those replacing the Engvall and Palmieri in the top 6 is an improvement.

Because we just saw what a decade of high draft picks got us....it's this, right here, today.

Not sure what you're saying here Leap. Is it that the Isles had a bunch of top 15 picks and using them led to the current state of mediocrity....Or are you saying that using 1st rounders to trade for veterans that also led us here?

Either way I'd certainly argue that snow totally shat the bed in terms of using all those top 10 picks he had. The Barzal trade doesn't take away that this guy draft Reinhart, as well as Strome and Dal Colle all in the top 5.

Just a note on the GM meetings -

Arizona + expansion - Arizona will get figured out and expansion is coming again. If Arizona, gets their land to build a new arena in northern Phoenix, then the league will announce expansion - first Salt Lake probably in 2027 and then Atlanta 3.0 a season later. I believe eventually, the league will get to 36 teams by 2030. Expansion fees will be 1 billion for each team... what does this all mean? more revenue.

Bettman said projections were spot on and they expect HRR to be 6.2 billion. Some have wondered if that would mean a bigger hike to the CAP next year. There is an MOU btw PA and NHL that says the CAP cannot increase more than 5%, which means 87.65 will be the CAP, unless 6.2 in revenue inspires the owners and players to ignore the 5% to keep everything up to 50% share. The 2025 cap will most likely go up the max of 5% which means the 2025-26 cap will be at or just over 92 m.

Also, worth mentioning is that the CBA expires in the summer 2026, there is nothing that should stop hockey, but it could mean a HUGE jump in the CAP, especially with new TV deals, expansion, no more player debt, and the escrow issue solved... we could see a cap of 100m for 2026-27 season.

Good points SI. Agree on all.

I'd actually make the argument that's even more of a reason to get rid of Lou before all this happens because the last thing we need is him jamming up even a higher cap ceiling with overpaid guys on long-term deals.

What I'm saying is, unless you want 50% roster turnover every season, an NTC is how you get players you want to keep to stay. I'm not arguing over whether those players were worth keeping or not, but your idea about NTCs is a bit archaic considering the whole league gives them out like candy. It's not a Lou thing and doesn't bolster your case any. I don't know any perennial powerhouses that have 50% roster turnover every season.
The bolded was the whole point so I don't even know what your chiming in for if you don't get that. As for my "idea about NTCs". What "idea" are you talking about? I made the point that they exist, and that they make an already overpaid player even more difficult to move. Do you dispute that? Where is Tarasenko playing right now? Was that Ottawa's first choice, you think? Or was it there only choice to get any value at all back. And where do you come up with 50% roster turnover if they weren't utilized? Pulled it out of your ass is what you did. Do you think teams are incentivized to keep flipping there roster constantly? How do you build a team doing that? Don't just make up nonsense because don't like the opinion or the opinion-maker, which is all that you have done here.

Don’t forget Nino who turned into Clutter. Not a complete fail in that one, but expectations should be higher for a #5OA pick.

For comparison’s sake, the Isles also drafted Brock Nelson later in the same first round.

I agree - just having some fun. And yeah, Sorokin will be elite again - I don't doubt that. He's been exhibit A in my argument against a rebuild going back to when others advocated trading him away for picks/prospects! ;)

Lucky for us the noted insider Darren Dreger shockingly got the Sorokin trade from Russia to Chicago wrong!

I do Not understand any of this shit about Barzal- he is their most talented player. When fans ask for a winger to play with Maty - it’s because he is skating with Lee and Fasching for f*** sake.

Most of us know who he is - it’s others here who just like to bitch.

He is signed for the next 7 seasons, so shut your traps and get onboard.
