Kind of funny that much of the board absolutely hated trading that 1st for Skjei back at the time.
I actually liked the trade at the time. Didn't think he would be this good for us, but I made the argument then (and will still make it now) that if you can take a late 1st and get a guy you know is going to contribute well in the NHL level, you make that deal. A draft pick is a lottery ticket, most don't hit, and if you can guarantee a hit, take it.

Also kinda funny how that trade really went from "meh" to amazing in the last 1.5 seasons. I'd say until last year, Skjei was... fine. Worth right around late first. Now he's awesome. Maybe a late-r career surge, maybe more proof of how long it takes dmen to figure out this system. Idk.
Funny you mention that. I was just looking up Hanifin's metrics after his trade yesterday and it looks like he's turned into a very good, if not borderline elite player on the blue line. Which, I'm happy for him and glad that he's finally grown into that role. But I also know there's no way we would have been content waiting this long for him to get to that point.

I think his "offense" went to amazing in the last 1.5 years, but defensively, he and Pesce became the workhorses right away, particularly when Slavin was paired with TDA 3 season's ago.

Early on in NY, he showed offensive prowess, but was sheltered. The Rangers then made him a top dog at a young age without much help, and he struggled. He was put in a position here to succeed with a defensively responsible partner and over time, it allowed his offense to re-emerge.

Rangers system was garbage after Skjei got that contract. Skjei’s oopsies were magnified because of the system and no help as you mentioned.

well Dubas wanted prospects and that’s what we’re offering so let’s see if this actually gets done

We likely aren’t offering the right ones and Dubas hoping someone will or give him the right futures he can flip
If I had to guess he let teams sleep on it last night and is gonna take final offers here today and see if anyone ponies up and beats whatever Carolina is offering. Canes need a answer soon they can pivot if they aren’t gonna get him

He wants contributing roster players for a rental. I mean, if he gets it, good on him, but I can't imagine there are a bunch of teams lining up to do that.

I'd be very annoyed if we did something like that for a pure rental. If that's the actual cost, I'm content with staying out of it.

As an aside, it is interesting that it seems like we suddenly have a bunch of great trade pieces in our prospect ranks. In the past our biggest hangup is that we just didn't have that kind of ammunition in negotiations, but it seems like our prospects have grown to a point where now we do.

I find it interesting that there's absolutely no chatter on Buchnevich right now, it's all Guentzel. Would love if the Canes are just bidding up the price on Guentzel and then pull a fast one by getting Buchnevich instead while everyone is focused on Guentzel.

Another side note. I know everyone thinks Guentzel is fine away from Crosby. But I'd be scared to give him a long term deal before seeing him play out the season here. I think he will get paid as a point per game player and I can imagine him stilling being really good, but maybe regressing to a 60pt guy without a generational center by his side.

This is my biggest concern if we kept him long term. I’d assume a Canes driven regression in his pts. He’s played primarily with Crosby and they have great chemistry. It’s not just Crosby being Crosby, they clicked from day one. While Aho is a fine playmaker I wouldn’t assume the same result. It’s my problem with us letting go of Necas this summer even if we have Jake. We needed to add a top six guy to what we currently have, swapping Jake for Necas long term doesn’t change anything without adding more. It’s possibly a downgrade as Jake doesn’t create solo like Necas does.

Might not mean much. If something happens today he very well could be asked to play for his new team tonight, so getting a morning skate out of the way makes sense no matter what happens.
True, and I didn’t mean it like he can’t get yanked off the ice any minute. Just that it isn’t close enough to keep him off the ice yet, and if someone wanted him to play tonight he’s got travel in front of him.

So, i'm easy. I won't cry if wlog. But if we're going to go big, go big.

In that spirit, i hope they've used the deadline to really gauge pesce's future. If he wants too much, plus no one wants tda, either offer him straight up for lindholm rental for rental or figure out what it takes to send him to the island for brock nelson. Hate to see him go, but at least it is close to his hometown.

Pair tda with skjei - they are good enough. Or slavin. Chatfield works with either orlov or burns. Sacrifice a little d to plug the giant 2c hole. Keeps tda on the powerplay the rest of the year.

Use whatever prospects/pick to get guentzal. Or figure out a package for buchnevich. If it takes drury, so be it - i'm good going to the playoffs with aho-(lindholm or nelson)-staal-kk down the middle.

If the islanders don't want pesce, figure out something around necas.

Use the remaining cap, if it exists to get duclair.

Any of that shit sticking to the wall?

If not, whatever. Gonna be a long 24+ hours...

I agree. I'd rather have sustained wining and chances for a cup for a decade rather than one shot and done
I don’t get the either for crows. You can do both. Losing a first rounder this year isn’t going to stop a 10 year run. The o key part of squad is mostly young ; d isn’t.
