Based off of past events - Pettersson was probably their big play, like Meier last year. I can see the the 2:45pm presser in my mind now -“We tried….blah blah blah…we like our group…Duclair/Hoffman/whichever rando rental they end up with - will add a lot to our depth…”

We can bitch and moan about it, but they are not being complacent with the team, and that's all that we as fans can ask for. They may well pivot to more of a gamble of a young player at the deadline, but they made sure that their #1 guy wanted to stay, and they did exactly what you're supposed to do.

Neither Eichel nor Meier chose their respective teams. The Canes were on Tkachuk's short-list, reportedly. Here, the Canes were the second choice, but that's understandable. He didn't pick the Rangers or anything like that. He's staying with his team.

You just wonder what could have happened had the Canucks not taken such a huge step this season.

Nah, I'm glad we're trying. But it does get frustrating that we're a team that players SHOULD be wanting to play for, and we're always the second choice.

But this really isn't the case here. It's a player that wants to stay with the team that's drafted him and where he's spent his entire NHL career. That would be like say Aho wanted to play for Montreal instead of us. It was a negotiating tool.

Same here. Rutherford didn't want to wait until the off-season where he could possibly lose Pettersson, so he used this to force his hand.

Tkachuk? sure but it would have been hard pressed to match that offer (and I think we were his 2nd choice) Eichel? sure but I'm not sure how competitive our offer was based on follow-on stories and he didn't "choose" Vegas.

Again, I’m totally fine with missing out on EP. Missing on Tkachuk last year hurt me more. I’m not convinced EP is the guy we need though of course it would be amazing to have him.

At least this wasn’t another case of our offer just getting beat. The player wanted to stay more than play for us, another reason to be fine with it not working out.

There were some rumors that Meier preferred New Jersey due to the huge Swiss contingency there, but none of it was actually confirmed. Regardless, you're right on the facts here. It's too bad for us that Vancouver finally looks like they can compete with their group.

It wasn't confirmed, but on the all-star break, he went on vacation with Hischier and 3 other NJ Devils. Maybe there wasn't fire, but there was definitely smoke.
