We'll see how the future iterations of this team turn out but the one thing that I like that we didn't see in the last generation was building a team that was diverse.

Torts teams weren't all that skilled, but they grinded and battled and were plenty gritty.

AV's teams were more skilled, but they were soft, listless and allergic to board play.

I think we're still a little short on 'Torts' kinds of guys, but its nice to see them at least attempt to blend the 2.

In his 3rd full pro season, if Chytil is far from -45 pt., he might always be. Kravtsov, no expectations. Kakko will put up 2nd line numbers.
Or he might be developing. Heck,if you add another 5 points, you have a top liner. Not many kids his age are.

Kakko may or may not. Again, he doesn't turn 20 until midway through next February. Such lofty expectations may be setting yourself up for disappointment. I fully expect him to become a franchise cornerstone. But I am not holding out hope that it happens in the first two years. Like everything else, it's a process. Some take to it quicker than others.

I think Lemmy, Lindgren, Tony D, Trouba are Torts kinda guys (we know fast & bread were Torts faves).

Warms my heart that this team is shaping up to blow any of our teams we've watched the past 25+ years out of the f*ckin' water.

Its still a process of becoming un "AV'd" but I agree.

Personally I'd like to see one more top 9 forward with some bite.

Is it? Why is Seth Jones the go-to comparison? There are probably plenty more accurate comparisons of who he will be as a D-man, like GoAwayStaal said, Parayko.

And that poster was not talking about stylistic. "the NEXT Seth Jones" is what was said. That implies the same skill level. He's not there.

I saw him in Stamford and it was tough to tell. He’s very tall and thin. Has a very long stride in which he accelerates quickly straight ahead while they aren’t short, quick strides which, I perceived, to be better for agility/change of direction. On defense, he likely wouldn’t need that agility whereas both Fox and Lindqkvist have it (yet neither appear to have the straight ahead speed of Miller)

You've got to think we've the pieces to go out and acquire that blooming top 6 fwd with that bite and goal scoring ability.

We have the opportunity to really build a juggernaut in between the draft and the start of next season.

Knew I forgot someone! So they'd be short $1.5MM as is if Georgiev got 2 years at $2MM AAV.

2 yrs 2 mil is the Francour contract so yea id expect that

Hank will retire and then plenty of space

IF he does but it’s looking that way or a trade at 50 off

well one way or another we aren't going to have 3 goalies next year...unknown at this point if georgiev is dealt (cause the return is high) or somehow hank is gone, but either way a projected cap situation with hank on the team would be the worst case scenario from a cap standpoint.

That's actually not what he said at all - he said he doesn't mind people disagreeing with him who have a clue what they're talking about. There's a difference.

It might not be politically correct but it seems like nothing is these days.

He's been playing the "I know what I'm talking about, having vets in the locker room matters" card for a few days now; it's in relation to those posters (assumedly, particularly myself) who maintain that veteran leadership isn't as important as talent.

And it's dismissive of anyone arguing against his point of view.

The thing is, he's not making any substantive points. Just "If you don't agree, you're wrong."

The passive-aggressive part is how he's trying to disclaim it as "I welcome debate," but implying that the only perspectives to be taken seriously are those experienced enough to realize his position (that experience in the locker room matters) is the right one.

The insane part is, this is a straw man that no one is actually arguing against. Everyone really agrees that leadership in the locker room matters.

How much and who provides that leadership and the balance of whether it's more important than talent, are the issues in play here.

Ok so this is what we are looking at going into the off season (Note: * Means RFA / Lines aren't set and players and move up and down):

Kreider - Zbad - Buch
Panarin - Strome* - Kakko
Lemieux* - Chytil - Gauthier
XXXX - Howden - XXXX
XXXX

Lindgren - Fox
Smith - ADA*
Staal - Trouba
XXXX

Shesh
Georgiev*
Lundqvist

Total cap hit less RFA projections: $67MM ($7.5MM of which is dead cap space)

My projected cap ceiling: $84MM ($17MM I cap space)

RFAs:
  • ADA: 5 years $6.5MM AAV
  • Strome: 2 years $4.5MM AAV
  • Lemieux: 2 years $1.5MM AAV
  • Georgiev: 2 years $2MM AAV
Remaining cap space after RFA: $2.5MM (19 man roster with 3 goalies)

Realistic prospects that could make the team (cheap ELCs):
  • Kravstov
  • Lundkvist
  • Rykov
  • Hajek
  • DiGuissepe*
Let's say for the remaining 4 spots they are filled with ELC or cheap vets, average of $1MM/player. Remaining cap space to operate the season is -$1.5MM.

The Rangers would still need to buyout or somehow trade one of Staal, Lundqvist or Smith. Possibly more, otherwise your basically going into next season with the same roster, which isn't the worst thing when the team is so young and the less experienced players should continue to progress (and wouldnt be able to retain Fast).

The other thing is that the Rangers moves at the TDL werent debilitating.
Theres a VERY small % chance of HL being here next year. Its either -8.5 and he retires or -3.5 and he's bought out. We'll see how HL feels at the end of the season. Does he take his $1M Bonus and retire after July 1st? forfeiting $4.5M or does he make them buy him out? Staal can either accept a trade or be bought out as well. -2.1

Smith is the most likely to be traded to a cap rich team. A young team could use his leadership and he can fill in at forward or play defense. I honestly dont know if he's traded. He helps in the room and can fill in. He's moved only out of necessity

So, AT WORST. The $5.6M we save in buying out HL and Staal bring us under the cap.

I also dont see ADA getting what Kreider got. 5x5ish. He's a great player and will get his payday when hes a UFA.

I believe that he is filling in on the radio tonight. Kenny is likely doing the NBC game tonight and I'm guessing LaGreca didn't want to travel to Montreal to do this one.

I legit hate when Sam isn't calling the game.

They need to find a worthy replacement for when he's done.

I'd overpay ADA right now to get him locked up for 7-8 years though.

Especially if we can find the requisite space by getting rid of the Smith contract or, god forbid, the Lundqvist one (I still want Lundqvist to remain a career Ranger but that's emotional, admittedly).

Once that new CBA kicks in, an overpayment of DeAngelo will look like a steal.
