I wasn't a fan of Pionk and how he was being used, but he did have better results against top competition than Trouba by every metric and he did it with Staal as his primary partner.

It's not that I don't understand that matchups affect a player's results, but it shouldn't make them immune from criticism - you can still perform below par in that situation. We're paying Trouba $8M and he should be doing magnitudes better than he currently is.

Most teams with true top defencemen have them playing the elite competition and they are the best on their team at it, not the worst. Here is Nashville's chart as an example:

Yeah, he had like that play along the boards that he like lost three times in a row at the attacking blueline. But like you gotta let plays like that slide. How many bad plays doesn’t Zibanejad make per season? If anything I think Ds are more exposed than forwards, but we pay a lot more attention to the negatives of the former than the later.

Honestly, Trouba has been a positive surprise for me. Better than expected. JMHO. See nothing wrong with his game whatsoever.

From experience many don’t agree with me on defenders. I think the Pionk hate was WAY overblown. Heck I even think Shatty took too much heat at times, he was just a D that couldn’t be used out of his comfort zone and with TDA and Fox it was the right call to buy him out.

And Staal hasn’t been that bad this season
