Trading Kreider will not come down to whether or not the return is good enough. Its not about what we bring in being better than what we send out. Its literally only about whether signing him long term is the right move.

They will either A.) sign him to term they're comfortable with, or B.) trade him for the highest return they can get

B is not influencing A

Are we overestimating where Newhook is then? Newhook could be 2-3 years away. We are fine with dealing Kreider, who is a much more valuable component to the makeup of the team than Buch for example, for a kid 2-3 years away? I like Buch but he, like Strome, is a guy they can live without and better use the cap space.

But i can see the concern dealing Buch for a prospect. I would definitely prefer a hockey trade

In many cases yes, I feel like our fan base is doing the same thing with Newhook. We build these prospects up to be more than they are or will be. Now, eventually I think Newhook could be a stud. But he doesn’t help us now or in the near future. It’s part of the reason why I’m leaning towards wanting to re-sign Kreider.

This deadline is more complicated and nuanced than I think I most understand. Unlike previous deadlines, little is happening in a vacuum. Every move impacts other potential moves.

Literally every trade deadline ever is like this.

It's not that nuanced.

No, it really isn’t. Not for us. Not the last few years. It was clear guys like Nash, Zucc, Hayes, even McDonagh would be traded. Their trades didn’t majorly impact other moves because we were in a flat sell off. Now? Not so much.

Well said. It’s as simple that that.

And the people who want to resign him because it’s oh so important to make the playoffs this year are insane.

From all the reports it clearly seems that Gorton is asking for a legit top6F for Georgie. Young and team controlled. Whether we get that or no remains to be seen but we certainly arent trading him to Colorado for Kaut.

Yes, even for the Rangers. There is no more nuance or complexity in this deadline than the others.

They are as much of a seller team as in previous years.

Yeah but none of those moves really created a ripple effect that influenced or forced moves of players who don't fit the mold of a "rental."

There is realistic potential for that here, even if I'm still pretty confident that Kreider gets moved.

I think there are very, very few....maybe even only 1-2 people here that are saying re-sign him because we need to make the playoffs. I dont think I have read that once.

Anyone or mostly anyone, myself included, that has advocated re-signing Kreider has constantly said it has to be for the right terms. And if not, they must trade him. There is no self renting here. I wouldnt even advocate self renting if we were in a WC spot. Heck even the 3 spot in the Metro if they were close to being a WC day over day.

Nash, yes, but only because he was very clearly done/close to done with his NHL career.

Others, not so sure about that one.

Like you said GM, Newhook very well could blossom into a stud. He could*.

But I did I miss something here? Did I miss the part where this kid was drafted in the Top 5? Top 10? No this kid was draftes 16TH OVERALL. 16th. Kaut was drafted 16th as well. Difference being is Newhook is a center. Great. Yes I am interested but lets not make this kid out to be the next Jonathan Toews. Because thats what it feels like. And we have Sakic and Colorado stating he is basically off limits. The misconception here is that, while he has promise, it isnt because he is s top prospect in the league....its because Colorado’s farm system is a desert outside of 3-5 kids. They havent drafted well outside of the top picks. They traded for Girard and Kamanev (who’s stock has dropped a little). Jost has been considered a disappointment to a degree while yes being blocked.

I am not going to be sucked into this love affair with Newhook in which some here sound as if they would give their 1st born son for.

What moves have they made recently that influenced other moves?

Even just from a standpoint of where they are asset wise, they're in a much more flexible spot than they were 2 years ago or even last year.

Selling, hockey trades, 'buying' - It's all realistically on the table.

Been saying this a long time. Gorton will have to get creative, but the priority this summer should be to find some good bottom six forward to insulate the kids.

Acquiring a prospect like Newhook or Kyrou would be a real shot in the arm for the forward corps moving forward, but you can't count on that to fill in the void left by Kreider. Gauthier was a nice step in that direction in filling in the forward corps with trades via surplus defensemen.

I think Skjei is definitely in play for the right deal for a forward, but Gorton needs to have another deal ready to go to bring in a minute muncher top 4 LHD.

Anaheim is going to be liquidating per your post a few days ago. They're going to blow it all up. I hope Gorton is on the phone about Hampus Lindholm. He's the kind of defenseman both in terms of style of play and experience that this team needs. I'd trade a Buchnevich and a high pick/prospect to get it done. Perhaps parlay the late 1st round pick that Kreider gets into the deal with Anaheim to make it happen?

I do expect the TDL picks to be traded at the draft. I could see something like a defense prospect the Kreider 1st and a 3rd going for a top 6 winger or a top 4 LHD.

I would also expect a Brady Skjei deal for a top 6 forward or a top 4 defenseman swap.

Next year becomes a year like 2010-2011 where the team starts to crack the window open.

The following year is when the cap constraints come off the books, and you enter a new age of contention, because you have a roster of young legs, depth, and cap space to start taking runs.

Deadline day essentially begins today. One long 80-hour day: game tonight. game tomorrow. collective breath taken on Sunday, and we are here.

The calm before the storm is palpable...

I’d make a strong case that the impending series of decisions (and therefore transactions, one way or other) make this the most influential block of time in franchise series. The imminent moves to come quite literally change the game for all that will follow.

We are in good hands, but I am anxious AF...

There are two imposing issues that will set of a chain of other moves

1) Kreider being re-signed

2). Henke’s fate

don't fall in love with a goalie
