Keeping Geo and Shesty makes no sense to me. You don't need two number 1s and the way Geo has played makes his leaving NY inevitable as he isn't going to want to be a back-up his entire career. Shesty is the future number 1 and Henrik should have been his mentor and back-up until his contract expired.
I mean, this would be nice sentiment and all, but we’re ignoring the fact that Hank still costs $8.5M next year. I’ve always argued that it’s a mistake to pay a goalie that much, regardless of how good he is. People disagree with that, and I understand why. But paying an aging backup that much to mentor your next starter in a transition year where you are cap strapped is insane.

And I’ll also throw this out there one more time. If Hank’s role actually is mentor nowadays, why not have him retire and rehire him in the organization to specifically do that. Throw lots and lots of money at him to do so. Are there rules against that? Why don’t the rich teams figure out creative ways to wield their riches in a cap world?

It’s not

People keep saying this is like the Eli Manning situation but it’s not. Eli Manning was washed and everyone knew it

Lundqvist isn’t done yet, most of this year he’s been better than Georgiev as it relates to goalie stats

I’d much rather trade Georgiev now, and keep Henrik which allows him to retire gracefully, as opposed to this exit that feels forced.

These are the Ny Rangers not sympathy Hall. Good lord it’s a rebuild and some think the Rangers are handling this awfully? Sure, let the kids rot and Hank play for as long as he wants. Good lord

Who’s saying let the kids rot? Lol you’re just making things up that aren’t based on what I said

He wants to stay with the team, let him stay with the team and retire when his contract is up. Back up Shestyorkin

It’s really not that hard.

A Shestyorkin/Georgiev tandem isn’t a sustainable thing, as much as some are trying to wish it into existence

Gorton is responsible for the next 10 years of Rangers hockey. His job is on the line. He has to put the team ahead of Lundqvist and squandering an asset like Georgiev just to appease a stubborn player, even an all-time-great, is a mistake. People still complain to this day about the organization bending to the will of Messier and yet here we are with people saying we have to bend over backwards to do what's best for Hank. It's nuts.

If he wants a farewell tour, he can announce that he's going to retire at the end of the season. If Hank doesn't want to be traded, he can sit on the bench and wait for a buy out. In that case he could go sign elsewhere and show everyone it wasn't about retiring as a Ranger at all, it was about collecting on his money and wanting to keep playing in the NHL.

Neither Georgie or Shesty have handled a full NHL season yet. Having them split duties evenly next season is completely fine.

I was there for game 5 and 7 at MSG in 2015...and we scored ZERO GOALS in a ECF at home. We were not close
They were the walking wounded. Staal and McD had foot injuries/breaks, G had a knee injury, Yandle had a separated shoulder in the first or second round, Zuc had taken a puck to the head, Brassard was playing with a bad wrist that required surgery after the season. Those are the injuries we know about. The fact that they hung on to the ECF was pretty amazing by itself. A healthy team with everyone playing would have won the cup.

One factor that maybe shouldn't be decisive but that still exists, is that its always much easier to be the No 2 guy who fights with toots and nails to get in -- than to be the one everything hinges on.

I am a little allergic to DQs tendency to proclaim that this or that guy is the New No 1 Goalie every other month. I don't think you ever must put -- more -- pressure on a goalie. They have enough of that as it is. There are easily 200 goaltenders out there that can play well for a a month in the NHL. Geo and Shesty is of course more proven than that, but the real tests haven't even started yet. How can they come back after a disastrous series in the POs against like the New York Islanders? How can they handle getting hanged out to dry at times. New coaches and systems. New equipment rules. A deep PO run. Being forced to play 70 games one season. Etc etc etc etc etc.

I think that it would be prudent to start to state that someone got a job to lose when they have started to show that they can handle challenges or a real magnitude.

why? For sympathy purposes? Claiming the Rangers are handling this awfully is you making up things.

With Zucc, who was our leading scorer that year, both Capitals series and Lightning series are completely different. But that's the nature of the beast.

Kravtsov and Gauthier cracking the top 9 next year is realistic optimism. It’s not a certainty.

I would not surprised to see Lemieux in the top 9.

I also see possible 8-10 draft picks like Rossi, Raymond, Holtz, Lundell, and Zary being in the NHL roster conversation next year.

We better plan on trading up then cause at the rate we are going those guys are gonna be gone :(

For sympathy? Wtf are you saying lol

He’s got one more season where’d he be the backup for our future starter over next decade.

You’re making it sound like he’s got 4 years left on his deal

We get it, you want Henrik gone yesterday. Some of us would rather he stick around a little bit longer

f***ing sue me

I really don't know what the Rangers could have done better/differently. At the end of the day, Hank could very well be annoyed/disrespected by this but he can never say the Rangers lied to him.

Funny enough, from an organizational perspective this is the best case scenario. Having 2 young goalies play this well to force themselves into playing time? I'll take it.

I agree to a certain extent, but both of the young goalies have ice water in their veins. Shesty's style will allow him to handle a big workload. By proclaiming Shesterkin the #1, Quinn lets Georgiev keep the chip on his shoulder and reinforces his will to battle to be a starter. I read Gilles Vilemure's book Monday night. Good read, pretty easy to read and great insight into his relationship with Giacomin and how to be a 1 and a 1b. Maybe we have that going forward, maybe someone blows Gorton away with an offer.

This dumping Lundqvist talk is not making me happy. I know there are cap issues but I was pretty keen to see Igor and Hank be the tandem next year and maybe longer. It seemed, if not quite poetic, to be at least a nice fit. What’s going on now is somewhat...jarring.
That said, if Gorton is truly this cutthroat, the trade deadline and upcoming summer should be pretty fruitful.

I agree; we only have one more year of Lundqvist on the books and I’d assume he’d be willing to take a deal as a backup after that to maybe be part of another Rangers team that is a playoff contender. If he doesn’t want that.... that’s one thing.... but I feel like they are choosing Georgiev over him when I don’t really think we will get much more out of Georgiev than we would an aging Hank. All that will happen is Georgiev spends a couple years here as the backup then leaves. We could get that out of Hank while letting him finish his career here.

It’s a rebuild doesn’t appear to sink in. Thankfully the Rangers are handling this as well a they can despite a few not accepting reality.

its also possible that they want it to look like hank is half way out the door to gain leverage in moving georgiev...if a team feels they are being forced to move him, then making it known that they are willing to move or even buyout lundqvist could alter that narrative

There is an expansion draft so you’re proposing to protect Hank the backup at the expense of losing a young player?

You should be praying Lundqvist is here next year, because if the team decides in the next week he’s getting moved during the summer, dollar to donuts Kreider gets the contract he wants

But yes keep telling me it’s a rebuild like I’m not aware

For $8.5M against the cap, in addition to the ~$7.5M in dead space, in addition to the ~$10 in effectively dead space between Smith and Staal

That's over $26M (more than 30%) against the cap tied up in a backup goalie, bottom pair d-man, a healthy scratch, and empty space.

At a bare minimum, at least 6 roster spots have to get filled/signed next season

That shit matters

Lets stop telling people to shutup in a speculation thread. This is what it’s here for. Bbk and Edge have their own lives and we shouldnt just sit around and wait for someone to feed them info for our own pleasure. You guys should just start a rumor thread where our vetted posters can post tidbits of info that wont get buried in this SPECULATION thread

I'm not sure about this. Gorton has been pretty conservative in general, I'm not sure he wouldn't just bank the cap space and pounce when another option opens up

Praying for Hank to get paid so the Rangers don’t extend Kreider? That’s the justification lol. Reality check, Kreider contributes while Hank is done. Both are gone. Even those blindfolded can see this.

I think the message being lost in this whole scenario is that Hank doesn’t want to be a backup/mentor next season, and I can’t blame him. He’s still an above-average-to-good NHL goalie.

That’s all I really have left to say on that matter because this situation sucks as a Hank fan. Just rip the band-aid off and move forward into the Shesterkin era.
