In this years UFA Dman class, yeah he is.

You make the point. Why pay UFA prices for a guy who's trending to be a 3rd pairing guy?
Because they have a need to fill and that is it. Sometimes you have to pay to fill a need. This isn’t a video game; can’t turn around and say ‘oh well I hate that we may have to pay a little extra on the open market, so I’ll just make a trade for xyz at age 22-26 on the perfecr AAV’ to fill my need. Doesn’t work that way.

Pair him with Lundkvist, let him move the puck.

He would have to be leaned on HEAVILY in this regard. Near DeAngelo when he played with Staal levels of heavy.

Thats a lot to put on a kid who is going to have a pretty substantial adjustment period as it is, assuming that hes even still here beyond the next few months.

I'm not asking for wizardry from a 3LD, just competence.

I would be very okay with signing Danault then flipping Strome and Buch for picks/prospects and going into the season with

Lafreniere-Zib-Kravtsov
Kreider-Chytil-Kakko
Panarin-Danault-Goodrow
Gauthier/Blackwell-Rooney-whoever

Lindgren-Fox
Miller-Trouba
Reunanen/Schneider/Robertson/Jones-Nils

Honestly this would be my ideal off-season. I don’t know if it will work with the cap and I don’t know which players specifically this is what I’d like to see:

NYR 2021 1st + either Strome and a prospect or 2 prospects to SEA for either Gourde or Tanev.

Why? Seattle isn’t going to have a roster of 30 players and they need some picks and prospects in the pipeline.

Then move Chytil (this one would hurt) + Buch + prospect to a team for a 2nd line center.

Sign Coleman and Suter.

Laf - Zib - Kakko
Panarin - Center from trade - Kravstov
Coleman - Gourde/Tanev - Goodrow
Kreider - Rooney - Barron

Lindgren - Fox
Miller - Trouba
Suter - Lundkvist

Shesty
Georgiev/Other
That’s an overpay on Tanev/Gourde, I think. But I do like the general idea.

Again I don’t know how Tampa let gourde get on that list for free instead of trading him. Just don’t get it. They’re going to lose their entire second line really when u go by usage. This was a boneheaded move by brisbois

And Coleman is a no. Kravtsov can play LW on that third line he’s very responsible defensively works hard skates hard adds offense he’s gotta be in the top 9 if/when kreider moves to the right side of the top line

teams probably thought they were going to get gourde cheap cause tampa was going to lose him for nothing and the cap issues. but if they traded gourde at a discount, they would then lose 1 of killorn/palat/johnson etc and lose 2 guys. so for the trade to make sense the return would have to be better than the 2nd player they would lose....

its a completely different scenario if you are a team with only 1 key guy exposed

Yes, it does. Teams look to the trade market as an alternative to UFA prices all the time.

Also, who said anything about a 22-26 age range? If anything, the guys mentioned here to fill this 3LD role are significantly older. McNabb is 30. Giordano is 64.

McNabb's not as bad as cyclops in that regard though. Plus they'd be the clear 3rd pair, likely facing easier competition.

Wanted Oleksiak yet appears Seattle is signing him.

It’s actually better both expansion teams were out West. Seattle will be an instant problem

Barclay Goodrow means no Danault, in my opinion.
Likely, but both would be hell to play against. A couple guys like that who could shut down another team is really what we have been missing these past couple years. Panarin apparently only wanting to play with grinders makes them all a match in heaven

But wouldn’t you have been able to protect one more of those guys from Seattle like palat if gourde was dealt? So yes you’d lose gourde but you’d gain assets and it’s a team that will need to build up assets again. Now you lose a center right out of the middle of your lineup for zilch. They’re going to lose that entire line for free
