Drury ain't paying Mika more than 8 mil. Everyone league wide is taking less, the market is in the gutter.

Expansion draft lists are due on Saturday right?

If Drury is going to leverage the extra protection slots something should happen tomorrow

Mika walks to UFA in that scenario. The market is in the gutter for mid level talents. Mika might end up being the best UFA center next year.

He'll get flipped at the tdl before he walks, but I think he'll end up taking slightly more than CK with similar terms. The only teams I can see being able to afford him as a 1C are teams I wouldn't think he'd prefer to play for. Just my speculation though.

Doesn't he have an NMC?

What if we are in a playoff race or even top 3 in a tight division? Do you trade him at the TDL? If we did and didn't make the playoffs it would not look great (at least not in the short term).
I think if he's on the roster during the season we either sign him or lose him for nothing. Unless we are a complete disaster and out of the playoff race.

We aren't on track for a cup this year anyway so the answer imo is absolutely move him if his demands are too high. You don't worry about how it looks in the moment if you have a plan for the future

Well sure, that would be considered a self rental and I wouldn't personally fault the FO under those circumstances. Then again, under those circumstances we would technically be "buyers" and that opens up other doors and discussions. Fair point though. I just don't like the notion of him holding Drury ransom. I don't see that happening.

Honest question, have we even seen a mega contract handed out since the flat cap was announced?

Not saying you are wrong but do we honestly think the NEW YORK Rangers are gonna trade their number 1 center while they are in a battle for the playoffs? Not even gonna bring in or mention who the owner is.
Sure if you are 8 points out of a playoff spot the decision is easy but if you are firmly in a playoff spot not so easy.

Nope and if he loves NY as much as he seems to love NY is it horrible to ask he takes 8-8.5 million a year?

depends how far back you consider "flat cap announced"? petro got his pay day and we know there was a flat cap.

COVID Zib cost him at least a million per year on his next contract.

The Rangers' window opens in two years. Get Zibanejad in that window and you're good. 5 to 6 years is perfect. The Rangers can re-evaluate at the end of Zib's contract when he's 33/34 and see if he can still be a productive piece of the puzzle.

5 years, $40 million gets it done, I think. I'd rather sign Zib to that contract and keep the assets that would be needed to trade for Eichel, and backfill with a two way center behind him than give up assets for Eichel. Use the assets to bring in a Dylan Larkin or Anthony Cirelli instead and keep back filling with young talent on ELC's.

My fear w Mika is the trend has been very slow starts when returning from injury (unfortunately we've seen it very frequently with him) and him needing time to get in a groove, but as players get older injuries tend to be one more prevalent. Investing heavily into this kind of player at his age scares me w term potentially into mid to late 30s. If he was a 28 year old hitting ufa it would be a little different, but you're paying him for age 30+ and he does have a concussion history that seems to be getting glosses over recently.

It’s the mid level guys who will suffer... Mika’s absolute dead bottom will be 8 million if he’s healthy and has a nice year. The corpse of Duncan Keith just got moved with zero retention making 5.5 million. Half the teams in the league need a top line center. Someone will pay pay the man handsomely and they’ll be happy to move out salary to do so.

A NMC isn't an end all be all to those asking. It complicates things, but most players waive if a deal doesn't get done and they are asked. It's like staying at a party you weren't invited to after being called out for it. Also, I don't think Mika says no to joining Vegas if we were to use this past season as an example (assuming his contract expires this summer). These guys wanna win a cup.

I think he's worth every penny in a normal market. Unfortunately for him the market is far from normal right now and all the player agents and GM's know it. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if he ends up making Hayes money.
