Roster Building Thread VI (2022-23): Offseason edition

It's a good thing Toronto can't win either. Otherwise we'd EASILY be the saddest & most pathetic original 6 team.

Montreal hasn't won since '93

You take the best player available with the most speed, skill, etc. If somehow Michkov is still there, run to the podium and to the back before anyone realizes what happened.

The team of three years will not be the team of today.

As long as it's not a LW.

Gurianov is an RFA I think and MTL will likely qualify him since it won’t cost much. Domi has probably priced himself out for us during Dallas’ run. Wood, Engvall are good targets. I wish we had a guy like Michael McLeod to anchor our 4th line. For a 12th pick he’s a bust, but he’s fast, physical, tenacious, strong, nearly 60% on face offs (above 60% this season) battles hard, uses his speed all over the ice and he has some skills that made him a first round pick, so he’ll occasionally make a nice play and chip in on the scoreboard. We’d end up paying 3.5M for this player when he’s 29 and hits UFA. Devils will get him re-signed as a 25 year old for 2.25M, get his remaining best years and cut him loose when he’s 30 and playing tough physical minutes has worn him down and he gets a reputation contract as a veteran somewhere. He’s a perfect 4C.
I like Engvall. He's solid all around and still has potential for more.

All the players need a better offseason focused on speed, strength and endurance. Lafreniere is our most important piece, he needs to get back to how he played in junior, physical, creative and with a shoot first mentality. Everyone is looking at guys we can bring in to play a similar style to Bennett but that's what got Lafreniere to this level, he just needs to be stronger, faster and given the confidence to play his game.

Which will come. We all hope next season he shows a big leap.

Salary cap to be discussed, possibly going more than the 1M that was previously set as. That would be great.

84 game season will also be discussed (no thanks).

That 2nd part probably ties into the first (more revenue).

Can't remember which podcast it was from last week, but one of Friedman, Johnston, or Seravalli were saying that they can see it being around a $1.5-2M increase rather than just the $1M. The extra bit of money helps, but I don't think we'll see too much of a jump. If they're lucky, maybe the max they'll agree to is $2.5M.

Slap Shots has also learned that Coyotes players filed multiple complaints with the PA during the season about sub-standard travel, lodging and logistical issues that were in violation of the collective bargaining agreement.

I'll take a Hayton trade demand. Throw in Valimaki too

Because second year players who just turned 21 can were called up a year before expected don't improve. Alrighty there Phil Esposito.
there’s bad analytics and there’s worst-in-the-NHL analytics that Braden has

Kakko was horrible his first year but had a dramatic turn around. I don’t believe that’s in store for Schneider. the way he processes the game is fundamentally bad

I don't think we'll have to eat any of Goodrow's deal.

By no means is he an albatross. He's a fairly easy-to-move slight overpay who's still highly regarded as a things and stuff player around the league,

I could easily see a rebuilding team with some cap to blow wanting to bring him in to teach "the right way."
Late on this, I don’t think we need to retain but don’t expect anything of value in return. Teams know nyr are in cap trouble, esp with the phantom threat of an offersheet(tho to be fair any offer sheet sent to a kid I might let go because anything within reason nyr can match). I was half drunkenly thinking goodrow & dominque for Reilly & Dipetro. Reilly tho overpaid could be a 6/7d w/jones. Both can move the puck, had hope for dipetro as backup until I realized he was still in the echl last season. Sorry for the rant but I think goodrow for a backup goalie or overpaid 6/7 d for one year might work, could even be a buyout option that can help with the cap going up the following season ..

Max Domi would be great on this team. Type of player we need
No offense as I’m sure it wasnt you but this is funny to me, whenever anyone brought him up as a deadline acquisition everyone said he was a horrible teammate and cost Carolina the series last season. it wasn’t you but domi has price himself out of ny and should’ve been the deal nyr with chi.

If the Cap doesn't go up more, the escrow could be paid off by preseason. Then the owners will be in a huge hole as the season progresses next year. They won't want that.

As for Othmann, if you haven't kept up with his year then say so. His regular season numbers were pedestrian, but context matters. He went from a team where he was the guy. All situations and constantly the focal point of all play. Once going to the Petes, he joined a great team where he needed to learn to become a piece of the puzzle. He did, and his excellent post-season is a great sign. He leads the team in points and has continued to be the menace to society he is known for. He has learned to work within a structure, and did it at a critical time against only the best of teams.

I would not write him off so quickly. And also, don't talk about his skating. He is no better or worse than an average NHLer. Is that ideal? No. But he has a whole summer ahead of him. The kid can play.

Agreed. I was calling for domi at the TDL back in even november, no one wanted to hear it.

Shesterkin only played one round and is still 2nd among all goalies in Goals Saved Above Expected (which is a cumulative stat)

Shesty was not the reason we are watching other teams in the ECF now. His numbers, make it sting even more, with such a blown opportunity.

I pray every night that we don't lose him in 2 years. That's when real pain could reach a boil. I hope this organization already has plans to extend him somehow no matter what they have to do to get it done. Do we think Igor will be as loyal as Lundqvist, just because? I'm scared as hell about that.

Trouba/Panarin/Kreider/Trocheck/Zibanejad all will still be on the books in the summer of 2025, how are we going to afford Shesty without moving one of them? We're basically going to be forced to move one of the top guys whether we like it or not in the next couple years. Two years will go by faster than you think and things could become really hairy if we lose him because we can't move on from anyone else. Nightmare stuff tbh
