That's not apples to apples though. That's comparing a post-trade deadline lineup with rentals, to a pre-season lineup w/o considering future trade rentals yet. Compare season opening lineups instead, and post-trade deadline lineups later.

Differences b/t last year and this year's (projected) opening rosters:

In: Wheeler, Bonino, Pitlick, Cuylle, Gustafsson
Out: Kravtsov, Blais, Reaves, Carpenter, Hajek

I'm still not overly thrilled, but you could make a strong argument that there's an upgrade clean across the board there.
This year is better. Only thing I am not crazy about is Quick vs. Halak. I liked the Halak signing. Hope Quick proves me wrong.
Besides Blais we got rid of a lot of junk no offense to Reaves for decent depth guys and a guy in Wheeler who could "surprise" some people. Sucks Blais never became the player here most of us thought he could become. Wheeler will score more points in his first 10/15 games then Blais did in his 54 games as a Ranger.

What would you do? Feels like we are still a forward or two short.
I think this forward group desperately needs a high energy buzzsaw skater. Not necessarily someone that is an offense whiz, but someone that bring a different dimensions into the forward mix. Right now I see people advocating to play vesey opposite panarin, if we are going to put someone in such a place that is out of their league then why not put someone there that adds a dimension. Max comtois is an interesting player to me if he could handle the rw. I think the team missed on hitting a Conor brown as well. They do need a rw, but I just don't understand the taresenko facination at this point. We keep going for names and point getters when our offense for numbers really isn't the issue. Where is the speed and where are the net guys? I would love to find a hagelin type right now to add that speed, add that grimmy ingredient, and add an effective pk player to take some load off our stars.

Unironically the one on the left. Gustafsson is pretty good and that list doesn't have shitty Kane on it.
What is the fascination with gustafsson?

He hasn't been good enough to actually lock down a role anywhere in this league. Nyr is team 7 in like 4 or 5 years? "Pretty good" players usually don't have that level of instability.

He's good at moving the puck and his defense isn't any worse than anybody else playing bottom four roles.

He has trouble locking down a role because he's a normal sized person (6'0", 197) playing a position where coaches and GM's are still very much obsessed with giants.

I think Sykora can possibly be that guy but he’s probably not ready for prime time yet but who knows maybe he surprises at camp, Berard is another possibility

I present Dominic Moore for evidence...

I wouldn't be surprised if Jones is dealt for draft pick(s) before the end of the year.

Part of his problem is he’s good enough to be a rental so he’s been on a bunch of teams but he’s not good enough defensively to stay put

He is good enough offensively to stay in the league as a depth guy .

So he’s a good 6/7 just hope Jones earns more time

The other side to that is teams keep on signing him and/or trading for him. If he really wasn’t good, he would be in Europe by now.

He got pretty heavy usage in Washington last year and played well. Personally I don’t really care how good his defense is, what he does very well was easily our #1 need heading into the off-season and we were able to address it cheaply.

He isn’t a top 4 defenseman and isn’t being paid as one. Don’t see what the issue is here. Bad players get signed to long contracts all the time so too your point is kind of moot.

I understand him taking a better offer, but I hope to heck that we at least tried to keep Mikkola at a reasonable number. 1-3 years should have been on the table.

If we're trading Lafreniere to the desert, Cooley is the target. Arizona reached big time and gambled on the two massive Russians filling out.

Simashev can handle an NHL shift out of the box, but he can be Zdeno Chara if he's developed correctly. But has a great skill set but very raw. It's going to take 4 to 5 years for these guys to be top end contributors. Does Cooley want to wait that long?

Drury should just trade Lafreniere if Tarasenko is back.

There is so much risk with trading Lafreniere.

Right now he was a draft pick made by the previous GM. Drury isn't really accountable for his performance.

If Lafreniere is traded and some how becomes a decent hockey player, then all of a sudden Drury becomes accountable for his performance.

Just from a corporate politics point of view, it's very risky trading him.

Having scored at 0.5ppg with 140 hits, he's already a decent player... His floor is going to be a physical, 60ish point second line winger. His ceiling? Who knows at this point?

Meanwhile in Philly lmao. Imagine if that happened to Vince or Larry or Molly? @RangerBoy would love that:sarcasm:

Who exactly would be fired? I would guess the moron who couldn't keep his mouth shut cause the lady is right. The Flyers suck, so why chose the org? Unless you are assuming that the answer is the Flyers offered the most money. Well, if that is the assumption, why even have the press conference? Flyers should just announce it an move on. Can't blame a reporter for trying to get something for their article cause the stupid team they follow decided to hold an interview with a role player for a team that might finish in last.

Bunch of teams have made signings and no interviews were given. Just move on.

What’s the report on Gustafson? Is he a turnstile defensively? I get he has a good rapport with Lavi but just seems strange a 35 pt season netted a minimum deal.
