This year is better. Only thing I am not crazy about is Quick vs. Halak. I liked the Halak signing. Hope Quick proves me wrong. That's not apples to apples though. That's comparing a post-trade deadline lineup with rentals, to a pre-season lineup w/o considering future trade rentals yet. Compare season opening lineups instead, and post-trade deadline lineups later.
Differences b/t last year and this year's (projected) opening rosters:
In: Wheeler, Bonino, Pitlick, Cuylle, Gustafsson
Out: Kravtsov, Blais, Reaves, Carpenter, Hajek
I'm still not overly thrilled, but you could make a strong argument that there's an upgrade clean across the board there.
Besides Blais we got rid of a lot of junk no offense to Reaves for decent depth guys and a guy in Wheeler who could "surprise" some people. Sucks Blais never became the player here most of us thought he could become. Wheeler will score more points in his first 10/15 games then Blais did in his 54 games as a Ranger.
