For Leonard he fits a need on RW and another passionate physical player that can skate.

If Leonard is available after 12 I would try to trade up for him. Fits Rangers to a T

Can play all 3 forward positions that can forcheck and skate

However, that doesn’t mean that he is a guaranteed top pick. Fast-rising yet smaller forwards can be overlooked on draft day, even if they shouldn’t be. This means the lowest projects that see Leonard selected late in Round 1 could become reality. To me, Leonard should be selected between the 11 to 19 range, as he checks enough of the boxes general managers love, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see him fall as low as the 30s on draft day.

Quotables

Ryan Leonard is a high energy winger who never takes his foot off the gas in terms of both speed and effort. He uses his speed and skill to blow by defenders in the neutral zone and pressure in-zone defenders who struggle to anticipate his next move. His playmaking and shot aren’t exceptional, but they’re both good enough to be reasonably sure that his offense would translate to the NHL some day.

Logan Horn – THW.com
Leonard is a highly energetic and lethal goal scorer that plays with a high level of intensity every time as he shows no quit to his game. He’s always in attack mode and displays a shooters mentality with a quick snap of his wrist. He has great velocity and accuracy and is always finding the back of the net as his 22 goals with the U18 squad shows. He displays soft hands in tight spaces, fooling both defenders and goaltenders.

Sounds like Ryan Callahan type to me
Leonard is all but a lock to go top 10. Scouts love him. A more skilled Ryan Callahan as you put it. I'd wager he won't last past Detroit.

After Detroit, there's going to be a run on defensemen that will push some really good forward prospects to the mid teens. I don't believe Leonard will be one of them. A one year NCAA player and plug and play into the top 9 a year later at the NHL level.

Dvorsky, Cristall, Sale, and Barlow are going to be the draft day fallers. The USNTP kids will all be gone before the Rangers pick. Smith, Moore, Perreault, Leonard. A lot of teams like Wood too. Top 15 pick. Danielson would go top 10 any other year.

Would you trade KAM to move up in the draft?

Like Miller RFA for 5th overall (example), or top prospect and top 10 pick???
Nope, you’re better off moving Lindgren. Don’t get me wrong I like Lindgren but you can see his styling of play is causing injuries who knows how long he can keep going. I also think Miller is still on the rise and should be paired with fox. Also if you trade miller now you’ll be looking to replace him for a long time. He still has so much potential and nyr have little in terms of lhd depth in the pipeline. It’s jones & Robertson and who knows if either will pan out. Also knowing nyr they’ll draft a forward who will bust out anyway

Miller isn't the worst at moving the puck but I'd never call him a puck 'mover'.

He does have the potential to be a puck 'lugger' like Bouwmeester was in his prime, however. The rare defenseman who can throw off the numbers game of a forechecking team by beating the first man and carrying the puck through the neutral zone. There were a few occasions in the playoffs where I wanted him to take a few more risks and try to carry the puck out rather than chip off the boards and lose possession- which there was a lot of.

By the math of what I posted, 1.5mil. Assuming they couldn't be buried in the AHL along with some of their cap, or traded off.
Okay, so 83.5 mil cap. For the sake of argument, let's say we are spending 83.3 mil with Kane on the active roster.

We place Kane on LTIR and our cap ceiling goes up to 85.3 mil (83.3 + 2 mil).

We add a player with a 1.5 mil cap hit. We are now spending 84.8 out of 85.3 mil.

We are now using LTIR cap space and LTIR space can't be accrued.

When Kane returns from LTIR, our cap ceiling drops back down to 83.5 mil, but we are still spending 84.8 mil. We need to demote someone. If we demote the replacement player, we would clear 1.15 mil (min NHL salary + 375k). So then we'd be spending 83.65 mil. We'd be over the cap and need to demote someone else to be compliant.

How many players would that leave us with? And we'd have no cap space because we didn't accrue any while Kane was on LTIR, so we'd have to run a man short until we could accrue enough space to call someone back up.

Again, this is a somewhat simplified version of how it actually works. The cap is actually calculated daily based on the number of days in the regular season, so apply the same logic as above, but to the daily numbers.

The way you do that math you are adding Kane's whole 84 game 2mil hit back on when he is playing only 21 games, missing 75% of the season. That was my question: does coming off LTIR for even ONE game (or 21) mean the ENTIRE cap hit for a full 84 game season is applied? Honestly that makes ZERO sense.
The way I'm looking at it when he comes back, the percentage of his salary for his availability only gets applied... which be 500K, not 2mil. That means we are using 83.8 by your numbers, but 83.5 by mine since my suggestion was keeping the amount of Kane's "return hit" free. I mean that's my point of stopping short of the cap to begin with. That makes us compliant even before burying, trading or waiving anyone.

His cap hit never comes off the cap. LTIR doesn't remove his cap hit. It just increases the cap ceiling temporarily. I'm not adding his cap hit back. I'm reducing the cap ceiling when he comes off LTIR. That's how LTIR works.

Yeah. I went and read up on it. I misunderstood that the 500K “not used” would be available, but in m scenario we are only getting an overage of 1.5 million because of it. And anything added using that overage needs to be subtracted once Kane comes back.
Thanks for the info and your patience!

I might be wrong here, but since Kane had surgery before he had a new contract, he's not going to be able to sign until he's healthy. I believe he needs to pass a physical for the contract to be insured. Even a 1m deal would be something an owner would want insured. So, this whole LTIR may be a lot of wishful thinking without a realistic path.

Frankly, any team is better not signing Kane until he's back from the surgery and the rehab. The surgery he's having doesn't sound like it always has ideal outcomes. Especially for an athlete in their mid 30s.

All of this is good for the Rangers. They can punt this decision down the road. If he wants to come back in the middle of the season, there's a chance there will be cap space accrued. But more importantly, the Rangers can see if Kane is addressing a need. If he makes sense to fit into the roster. I have expressed my thoughts on that numerous times, so I won't belabor it in this post. But there are far bigger fish to fry right now than adding or not adding Patrick Kane.

Yeah, we're at that point like in 2004, where really need to homegrow our depth players with high draft picks

Yea so many people freaked out when I said it would cost a 1st to move Goodrow.

Reality check:

It's a terrible comparison. Peterson is not an NHL goalie. He played in 10 games, compiling a spectacular 3.76 GAA and a sub 87% SAV%. Making $3MM for 2 more years.

Goodrow is a good hockey player with a winning pedigree.

Good is stretching it, although I'm sure he has enough value where the Rangers won't have to dump him with an asset.

Terrible comparison between players IMO, and they could clear ALL of his salary (and a bonus 100K) of the cap this coming season simply by buying him out. Next season it would be all of it and 200K bonus. After that it’ll cost us, but the cap will be higher. Using a 1st to get rid of him would be insanity. You think Drury would rather have 3.6 mil cap space than a 1st AND Goodrow? Sorry bud but that is nuts. Mark my words if they trade him we attach zero and get something back.

I would skip every signing besides our own RFAs and give Barbashev the best offer we could muster. He’ll probably get more than we can offer and go elsewhere, almost undoubtedly, but that would be my move. Trade Goodie if we can for a 3rd. Use Brodzinski, Cullye, Edstrom, etc. for your 4th line. Barbashev on Panarin’s off wing would be magnificent if we’re stuck with Bread.

Does LTIR havne a penalty? If so, yeah a waste, if not, try guys out till he's healthy, 0 reason not to.
Because then we’ll be testing him out and making room for him and catering to his needs. He’s another teams legend for us he a washed up old guy. I’ve seen this numerous times since the 70s.

Rangers are not going be to be able to afford Barbashev after his cup run.

I said he would almost undoubtedly get more than we could afford but I would still offer him the maximum that we could afford before I would even talk to another UFA. Maybe he wants to by in NYC. Maybe he wants to sign where his brother is. In all likelihood, it’s a 99.9% chance he says no way, but I’d still go after him first.
