I'll tell you guys one thing...

At no point during this series against the Canes did I ever stop and think to myself "You know what I wish we had done? Traded a bunch of assets for Jack Eichel. I bet he'd be really impactful right now."

Media and many around the team were calling for that one.

We should commission these guys to investigate how that was possible, given our track record with big name acquisitions:

Same with Giroux in Florida, when they sit down and evaluate that move, I don’t think they will come to the conclusion that he was a difference maker that fit what they needed. I would say that someone like Copp would have helped them more.

I think this goes hand in hand with how the game is played. At certain points in this league, playing solid defense and 5 on 5 hockey has been the easier part, while the teams with the ‘game winners’ have had an edge. Right now teams know how to create offense and score goals by design, that is the easier part, what separates the best from the rest is that the best will put players on the ice that tear your team apart with speed, hard work and a lot of smarts in how they play.

Right now you can only really compete with this by matching it with the same medicine. Somewhat experienced players that has been together a while and learned the hard way what works. In 5-10 years I think kids will bring it to the next level in terms of being gutsy with the puck, hanging on to it and making plays in traffic and when they face high pressure. Looking at like that US U18/20 team that dominated and Sweden’s youth line that was so good with Raymond-Henriksson-Holtz — that is what they did.

But kids right now that come up aren’t good enough. Someone like Zegras who is a success — would never be a great asset against like Pittsburg, Carolina and Tampa, not at the age he is right now, in 2-3 years perhaps. And it’s really the same with the top offensive talents like Eichel and Giroux. These guys are elite with the puck in the attacking zone. With a scoring chance. A team needs a couple of guys with those abilities. But a team won’t become the best by having like 5-6 of them as long as they aren’t elite on the normal 5 on 5 shift.

Congratulations on the child. Always a wonderful time to be a parent despite Sometimes excruciating external circumstances. Should We start a 2040 draft thread already?
I suspect the baby barbel station is already ready downsrairs :)

As much as some people viewed that trade as steal, it cost them two former sub 20th 1st round picks, another 1st, and a 2nd. I'm glad we didn't pull that trigger for a host of reasons.

We could really lose Kakko to an offer sheet. It wouldn't even take that crazy of a deal.

It also f***ed their cap.

I can't see a team giving him a crazy enough deal that we wouldn't match. He hasn't been great these playoffs, was injured for a good part of the season, and the signing team could be screwing themselves with his QO later down the line.

I also wonder if there is any hesitancy to offer sheet a Rangers player because of Dolan's deep pockets. Of course, it has to be within the confines of the cap, but Dolan is not shy about spending and it could put a cash-strapped team in a tight spot.

Nils Lundkvist to the Dallas Stars for Mavrik Bourque. The Stars have to re-sign Jason Robertson and Jake Oettinger who are both group II free agents with no arbitration rights. The Stars are looking to extend Roope Hintz this summer who is one year from being a group II free agent with arbitration rights. John Klingberg is a free agent and the Stars are not re-signing him. Jim Nill needs a RD. The Stars are facing a cap crunch.

Robertson's contract will take up at least 1/2 of their available cap space. Extending Oettinger long-term will not be cheap. What did Igor Shesterkin get and what did Thatcher Demko get? Oettinger is looking at least $5M in a 4-5 year deal.

The Stars are paying a fortune to Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and Miro Heiskanen. $27.8M combined. Robertson will be another big ticket. Hintz will be a big ticket starting in 23-24. Another $8.5-$9M for Hintz. Oettinger at $5M. Esa Lindell at $5.8M. Maybe Joe Pavelski wants to keep playing after next season.

Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek were discussing the Stars cap situation for this summer. Jeffy said the Stars might have to trade a player to make the money work for this summer. Denis Gurianov is a group II this summer with arbitration rights. His QO is $2.9M. Gurianov was really good/great in the bubble two years ago. He has struggled to reach his full potential. He was a healthy scratch in the Calgary series and during the season. That guy has so much talent and ability. Gurianov would be a very good fit on the Rangers if they had the cap space which they don't.

Bourque would be a good fit for the Rangers. He can start the season in the AHL His play will determine what happens to him after that. Can the Rangers afford Filip Chytil after next season? Lundkvist gives the Stars an entry level option to replace Klingberg. There is only much money to go around.

Wyatt Johnston instead.

Name a team that could offer Kakko an offer sheet we couldn’t match AND isn’t going to be out of the playoffs and/or in a terrible market at least for the length of the offer.

Sure Arizona and ottawa could make an offer sheet but he’s likely not touching those.

Colorado would be the best fit for him, he works out w rantanen, but they’re f’d w the cap.

And any team that does make that move has to know Dolan does have deep pockets and spends to the cap, so once the cap does jump they could be screwed.

Wonder if Seattle would have some fun and give it a try. I doubt it though

I know that it has been a parody in terms of threads at the main board. But lol, at the rate Trouba is sending guys out, it can't be matched by anyone other than Wilson (if him even) the last decade. Or? How many have he sent off now just the last months? This season?

Seattle will in all likelihood finish next season near the bottom of the standings and any team would have to be paying well in excess of $4 million for us to not match - thus giving us their first round pick in 2023.

If Seattle want to risk missing out on Bedard or Michkov for Kakko and significantly overpay him for the privilege, they can have him.

Nice, I'm glad we seem to be holding onto Laf and Schneider in this case. Canucks fans tell me that we're trading one of them to rent Miller for one year.
