You lose me when you suggest that cap strapped Cup contenders would be trading blue chip center prospects for an undersized offensive defenseman who couldnt stick in the NHL this year.

You lose me when you mis-characterize what Nils Lundkvist is - he's not an offensive defenseman, he's an all-around defenseman who could thrive on the PP - and mis-characterize the success he had while up here - again, he's only not here because Schneider is also damn good. Nils had pretty good metrics during his 20-whatever game run here. Nils isn't Tom Poti. He's way more LIKE Fox (not that he IS Fox, but like him - excellent defensive smarts will allow him to overcome size limitations).

Maybe said contender needs a RD more than it needs a center. After all, RD is probably the second most important position on the ice after center.

If it's not possible then how did Brannstrom bring back the best winger in the league at 26 years old?

Some considered him the best all-around winger in the league for a period there, or close to it. Besides the point - he's elite.

I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone consider him the best winger in the league.

But, yeah, Lundkvist should bring something substantial back and preferably without a monster contract in tow. A young top 6 forward sounds right to me.

Nils is a good prospect, but wouldnt the Brannstrom for Stone trade be a cautionary tale for the team acquiring Lundkvist? Ottawa traded an elite winger, who signed an extension a week later, for basically nothing.

I think its a matter of when, not if, he gets traded in a package for a top 6 forward with term, versatility & sandpaper

Conor Garland?

I'd take a shot on Scheifele needing a change of scenery. He has to be the man in Winnipeg. If he came here he'd have a whole bunch of other guys doing work like Zib, Kreid and of course Panarin. You look at interviews of him up there and he seems checked out. I would be too, Winnipeg is an awful place. I went there once to go see the Jets play the Wings and my friends and I couldn't wait to get out of that town as fast as we could. I recall watching a post game interview with him recently where he was asked if the team had an identity and he was like "I don't know."

I think if you can launder the cap hit through another team (Seattle, Arizona, Buffalo & Ottawa always have cap floor issues as well) then the cap hit is negligible and him being signed for 3 more years is great because that is the Ranger's window and by the time that contract is up you might even be able to re-sign him if the cap has risen enough or is about to. I'd offer Chytil, Nils, Krav, 1st 2022 (or 23) for him, with a 2023 3rd & 2024 4th to another team to hold some cap hit.

Scheifele going full methhead on Evans in the playoffs was not a good look. I definitely would not overpay for him, if I was interested at all.

Personally don't think Chytil, Nils, Krav and a 1st are an overpayment because we can afford to trade all those guys.

you also run the risk of those assets you hold further depreciating though.... especially in kravtsov’s case.
Another season in the KHL isn’t a good look for his value... most nHL teams would at least want him over here playing some type of NA hockey....
He had a solid return to Traktor, which was good for us, but that could have gone way worse....
His value will never get to where it once was, but it’s at a point now where he at least has value as an interesting Plus in a trade to a point where teams would like to gamble on him.
Hes already won. Drury not trading him yet just looks like an attempt to ruin his career. He should take what he can get. This organization has 0 success developing Russians... Tyutin, Nemchinov and Anisimov (Kovalev mostly by Pittsburgh).

Eichel practicing in full for Vegas today. Could get the leagues trade wheels spinning the next couple weeks

Really? 4.9 for Garland is really good. Deal takes him to 30 where he likely wouldnt get much of a raise. Seems like a great deal.
Think he's on a good deal now, but I definitely wouldn't want to be the team that gives him his next one. Don't think his current contract works for the Rangers either.

The dead cap space of ~$3.45m is really a killer next year. No way around it.

Shattenkirk and DeAngelo buyouts. There should've been an alternative to these decisions (and I'm certain all of this dead money on players playing excellently elsewhere are part of what got up Dolan's ass) and ramifications they're still having.

Not for the Rangers he doesn't. Not a fit.

Yes he does. I'd far prefer to pay him 4.9M to fix the RW situation and go cheap at C then pay one of these Centers 5M and go cheap at RW. Specifically if we're considering re-signing Strome I'd rather have Garland than him and play Chytil or whoever at C than to keep Strome and have another one of these filler RWs.
