Almost certaintly means Copp to take Lafs spot.

Kid finally gets on a point streak... but whatevs
I feel confident Laff will start the playoffs with Kreider and Zib. Gallant just got a bunch of new toys and he's trying to see who fits best where, nothing really wrong with that. He's gotta start looking at how to optimize the lineup.

Quinn would do and say this too--specifically, saying that he was 'experimenting' with some combos, but then only making the one change to take a kid out of a top-6 position where they were performing. It's just crazy because Lafreniere is in the midst of a point streak and the first attempt at a lineup with the new additions was kept together for one period last night--the only period where we were any good as a team. Wouldn't common sense just dictate you try again with the lines that were working?

He's coming along okay. I'm interested to see what he can bring to the third line with greater confidence in his natural position.

I just really think he needs to be on PP1 as early as next season. It's not like Strome's role on the PP is an overly complicated one.

Is it possible to read something into how RR had looked with and without Rooney? They had some successful games for a while, but not so much lately.

One aspect is that these lines / teams tend to be more successful earlier in the season. They more or less exclusively live on the other team making mistakes. The more well oiled teams are the less mistakes. Earlier in the year it’s more common that a D gets a little shaky when they hear the steps of Reeves behind them. This can be very obvious in preseason, but carries over into the season a few months often.
IMO the 4th line has been awful the whole season. Rooney had some puck luck early on, and he kills penalties, but is a below average 4th liner 5 on 5. Reaves apparently is a popular guy in the locker room and part of the leadership group, but is a negative on the ice.

I like the idea of this Motte-Brod-Hunt 4th line. I'm not expecting any goals from them, but there's a lot of speed and hustle there.

I love Laff and I think he will be very good for us , as we see he looks like he has been turning the corner , my only qualm is he gets muscled around way to easy, his age shows as far a playing with "MEN" and the PO are for men , he needs to get much stronger but as far as the IQ , toughness and skill it's definitely there ..

So if I understand this correctly, once Martinez is healthy he has to come off of LTIR and Vegas would be forced to make a move to clear cap space for him or be in a situation where they are forfeiting game and losing draft picks. That may be as simple as moving Lehner or Smith to LTIR, but I don't know the nature of their injuries and if that is even an option.

It really puts their back up against a wall. How many teams have the cap space left this year to help them out?

NYR will take Dadonov/Smith for an unprotected 1st and future considerations, with the understanding that the future considerations are Chandler Stephenson. The future considerations are due after the season but before the draft.

They had 3 months to address this after the Eichel trade and waited until the last minute and got burned. If they get a better offer, take that one.

Curious to see how that line looks. Like you said not expecting goals but still should see speed, Responsible d play and not afraid to take the body.

I agree.

I think Gallant needs to find the strongest set of lines and the right player combos going into the playoffs.

The only way to do that is mix shit up a little.

I think well ultimately see something like this once everyone is back:

Kreider-Mika-Copp
Panarin-Strome-Kakko
Lafreniere-Chytil-Vatrano
Motte-Rooney-Goodrow

Reaves/Hunt

Lindgren-Fox
Miller-Trouba
Nemeth-Braun

Schneider/Hajek

Igor
George

And then what do we have to part with to move Dadonov and his $5m contract (and $6.5m in real dollars) in the off season, withe every team in the league knowing we need to get rid of him to sign our guys?

Meh - he's got to tinker around a bit with the new pieces coming in and Rooney and Kakko on the horizon. I wouldn't read a whole lot into it. Besides, a third line of LaF/Chytil/Vatrano is finally a 3rd line that the opposition might have to pay attention to.

No problem with putting Laf back at LW, just make sure that line gets 14+ minutes.

Not sure about Vatrano on the 1st line, he hasn't done much since getting here or looked noticeable.

If we're line juggling, maybe it's time to split Panarin-Strome?
That's not going to happen until 22-23 and everyone knows it... might not even happen then.

Seeing Laf demoted sucks but with 3 new forwards added to the team you have to experiment with the lines a bit. The top two lines are going to get the majority of the TOI so I can see why GG would prefer a veteran like Vatrano over Laf but this is why I've stated previously that I believe Kakko is taking that top line spot if he comes back at 100%. Copp needs to stop the bleeding on that second line or else I'm not sure what GG can do to fix that line. Chytil is the only chance the bottom six has at entering the zone with possession and creating offense so he can't be moved up to replace Strome. Panarin is going to have to hit another gear or else that second line is in trouble if Copp can't fix it.

Now that Copp is the PK partner of Goodrow, Rooney's role in a starting lineup is less clear.

He's a great option as the 13th forward, can play any position.

Hunt-Goodrow-Motte with Rooney and Reaves as the spares is a tremendous idea.

I hope he's getting for that dumb slashing penalty he took on Geersten. At least I hope he's being held accountable for something so pointless.

It's the Gallant special. Kakko puts a run of great games together with Strome and Bread? Pull him off that line. Chytil puts a set of great games together with Strome and Bread? Pull him off that line. Laf puts together a nice, extended run of games with Zib and Kreids? Pull him off that line. I don't understand the man's logic at all. Most coaches would LOVE to see sustained production on a line with a mix of kids and vets. GG stumbles into such lines three separate times and every single time, his instinct is to f*** with it.

Mollie Walker would put her money on the Rangers trying to re-sign Andrew Copp.

If they don't try to re-sign Copp, then Drury is an effing moron. It would imply one of two scenarios:

1- That they traded for Copp as a rental, figuring they will never make it past round 2 of the playoffs. In that case, a pair of 2nd rounders is a bit steep.

2- That they traded for Copp as a rental, figuring that they WILL make it past round 2 of the playoffs. In that case, a 1st, a 2nd, and a solid prospect was an absurd overpay for a middle-six rental player.

The only way our trade package isn't an overpay is if they see Copp as part of the equation moving forward. And I like Copp, but he--as a UFA with a troubling concussion history--isn't a "1st, 2nd, and a good prospect" level player. That's more than we got for Hayes, who was a better player than Copp.

If I had to guess the lineup at full strength, according to Turk

Kreider Zibs Kakko - matchup line
Panarin Strome Copp -
Laffy Chytil Vatrano - benchwarmer line lategame
Motte Goodrow Rooney/Hunt/Brodz - matchup line
Reaves

Think Reaves play against heavier teams. He's slowed down considerably as the season's gone on. Against Pittsburgh, Motte Goodrow Hunt/Rooney works

It's possible the Rangers have different plans, but surely we have to see Copp at centre for a run of games (maybe once KK's back) to help evaluate whether he's worth offering a contract to?
