I went out with a good friend of mine who has his connects and coaches around the Long Island. To hopefully make a long story short, he met someone at a business venue a few weeks ago who coincidentally is a cousin of Jack Hughes (showed pictures of him and everything on her phone and spoke about him). She said that the Rangers have been or made contact with him. This person also claimed that the Rangers supposedly would trade a lot to get him, somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 1st round picks to get the 1OA this year for Hughes. Take it for what it’s worth, of course, I don’t come to spread rumors but an interesting story to share.

Good so the Rangers know they need a stud draft pick and are willing to pay the price. Not sure a team would be willing to trade out of that spot if the Rangers are at lets say the 7th spot. But we can dream.

I strongly believe that one of Kreider or Panarin will be on the Rangers next year. A developing young team needs leaders. Kreider certainly appears to be a team leader. Panarin has been described by his GM as a great team player and leader and he brings the added bonus of being Russian when a large contingent of his countrymen are due stateside next year. You are not going to trade for a leader and you tell me where else do you go for a UFA leader? Anders Lee? Joe Pavelski? Alex Edler?

It’s one thing to strip down the team on the ice but if you strip down the team in the locker room (no smartass comments necessary) you’ve created a problem of your own doing.

Why do the Rangers need to sign a mercenary to be a leader?

What were Sather and Gorton doing in Toronto? Dubas?

In the MSG Network with Sam & Joe, Gorton said he has spent a lot of time with the scouts in the last few days. Gorton was in Plymouth,Michigan watching the US National Development Team Program play. It sounds like the Rangers had their scoutings meeting there. Maybe Sather was there too. Take the one hour flight to Toronto. Watch the game. Fly back on the team plane. Sounds like a nice few days.

I could see Shattenkirk having a better year next year with a summer off and proper training post-knee. And Smith has re-established himself as a decent player. Might be able to get something for them at the next trade deadline of the Rangers retain

Also in that interview found it interesting that gorton said we could have 3 or even 4 first rounds picks. I take that as he’s thinking Tampa wins the cup but also that krieder is getting traded. Just found it very interesting that he mentioned 4 first round picks

This is how a rebuilding team should look like IMO. A lot of young players finding their game at the NHL level. Granted a lot of responsibility is put on Zibanejad to lead the way, maybe too much to be durable for an entire season, but overall I think we are heading in the right direction.

In addition, the stats of our kids might not give us bragging rights at the main board, but I definitely like how many of our kids are looking. I made a post about it the other day, but it’s just reaffirmed after watching last nights game.

Skjei was a stud. I think Lias is looking good for a 20 y/o. He is skating better. He is moving the puck so well when he gets it in the attacking zone. He should have the puck more, makes so many good passes when he get it. Won some big draws. Chytil is skating better at center. I have no problems with Pionk. TDA is great. Lemieux is a player, loves seing him get some time with Ziba. Love Howden. Boo is back to pre-concussion form.

Buch, all I can say is Buch. Damn he looked good. So talented, what a stud. OMG.

No reason to be so negative!!

TB wins the Cup and Zookster signs in Dallas.

Bingo. That is how you turn into an Edmonton/Florida/Buffalo.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all open for trading Kreider for the right return. However, anything less and it just isn't worth it. The value he brings to this team goes beyond goals and assists.

Not super surprising the team is reaching out to Hughes

Dahlin said last year the Rangers were one of the teams talking to him the most

God I hope this team finally catches a break and wins the lottery

There is a better chance of the Rangers getting the Stars first in 2020 than 2019. A better chance of the Stars signing Zuccarello than them winning two playoff rounds.

The Stars just completed a 5 game homestand. They scored 10 goals. 1-3-1. They were 3rd in their division. Now they are back in the wildcard quagmire. Four game road trip in Western Canada this week. 4 games in 6 nights. Some of those teams aren’t very good like Edmonton and Vancouver.

The Rangers need Nill to keep his job so they need Dallas to make the playoffs. Nill is the big Zuccarello fan.

The Rangers could get the 4th first round pick in a Kreider trade. Late lottery/mid first round pick.

The NTDP has four definite top 10 picks, and possibly six if a team really likes Cam York and/or Caufield.

Hughes
Turcotte
Zegras
Boldy
Possibly Caufield and York

I bet the Rangers are keyed in on two or three of those guys as our top pick depending on where they end up after the lottery. Slats and Gorton probably wanted to see them in action in person.

I wouldn't read into them being in Toronto as much if Michigan wasn't so close. They can check in with Dubas and discuss potential deals for the draft and summer time. Every time a big deal happens over the summer, the GM always says that discussions had been going on for a while. Gorton discussed the Zibanejad deal with Ottawa for weeks before it was done. I read an article that Gorton initially wanted Zibanejad ans a 1st for Brassard, and that Ottawa was close to accepting but got cold feet at the last minute. They ended up settling on Brassard and a 7th for Zibanejad and a 2nd.

I'm sure that the Rangers and Toronto are discussing potential deals. We have a lot of what Toronto would want. It's now or never for them before their window closes. They're paying Matthews and Tavares for the next 6 years. Nylander extended. They're going to need defense. Skjei? Smith or Shattenkirk at 50% to shore up their bottom pairing? Both contracts are only for two years after this one. Kreider at 50% to make another push next year? Maybe something bigger for the Rangers? Marner and his agent are being hard asses. His agent is commanding Matthews money because he sees him as important as Matthew's to Toronto's success. Does Toronto have the cap space to shore up their defense and pay Marner? They can do one but not both. Marner and Tavares were Toronto's best forwards last night. Marner was buzzing all over the place. The Rangers have the cap space and a lot of capital to get a deal done for Marner.

They may want a place to park Marleau next year. I think I read somewhere he had a no trade and the only places he would accept a trade to were New York and Southern California. No basis for this other than idle speculation on my part.

So who is going to show the young players how to be successful? Jimmy Vesey? Brendan Smith?

They need to sign veteran role models. That’s how a locker room works. Have you ever been in a locker room?
Lundqvist, Shattenkirk, Zibanejad to start. Will probably sign some guys like/in the mould of B. Boyle.

Do you need leadership in the room? Undoubtedly yes. Do you need to spend 7 years and 12M per year with a NMC (or maybe 7*7.5 w/ NMC for Kreids) on a team that's going to be bad for 3ish of those years (likely their 3 best years of the 7 year deal) to get leadership? Undoubtedly no.

To further address my post above, this is the sort of move I'd be okay with the Rangers making. Taking on vets like Marleau/Callahan to provide leadership.

If they are not going after Karlsson and Panarin, I would like them to go with a couple of short-term deals for exerienced players.

What if, we go with Stralman and Brassard instead? They can teach the young kids, sign a 3-year deal which is the perfect way to bridge the gap between now and when the rookies are ready to take over.

Stralman makes sense.
