We're also in completely different stages.

Exactly. The Lightning are in definite "win now," mode and they do not lack a single core piece to in fact win this year. The team has no real future because by time the first round picks they are spending on the Hagel deal are ready to contribute the team will be in rebuild mode anyway.

The Rangers are a completely different scenario; they both lack the long term pieces they need at forward still, AND they have runway because they aren't ready until all their kids are ready anyway. Shesterkin and Fox will still be here but that's likely too bad so sad for Kreider and Trouba and possibly Panarin and Zibanejad too.

Major moves should wait until the summer but there is no excuse to stand pat.

Just because great teams improved doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t. Especially with the lack of quality of the goaltending in our division.

The only one who is likely going anywhere in the next 2 years is Trouba, unless of course you want to continue rebuilding for another 5 years.

Again, those picks for that team?? This move helps them alot more than the picks would.
Exactly. Why are people having such a hard time with this. For us it would have been a terrible decision but for Tampa it makes sense. Teams do overspend to win cups. That's just the cost of doing business. Hagel is cost controlled for another 2 years and that is when they will likely be tearing things down anyway.

Our cap may be a reason we stand pat. I really don't want that at all but I am concerned that Drury has put it out there that we aren't interested in anyone w term. I hope he has a plan for the offseason.

Crazy package for Hagel, but Tampa is in a position to win another cup so you gotta pull the trigger. They will probably deal Killorn in the offseason and maybe Palat walks?

I wanted the Rangers to get Hagel but seeing the package he returned I am glad we didn't outbid that. We aren't in as good a position as Tampa. I really hope Pit doesn't get Garland. He screams a player that scores a million goals against us next to crosby for another 3 years. I still kinda hope we get him. Pipe dream.

Also, I don't buy anything Friedman says about the Rangers thoughts moving forward. The rumor guys don't know much about the organization. They clearly have links to other organizations and try to piece together from there.

considering no one had Vatrano to the rangers in any sort of rumor I'd say Drury has things locked down tight.

Doing Dallas a favor if we take Radulov who is an expensive rental and having his worst productive season. i wouldn‘t mind gambling on him for depth if he was super cheap like a 6th or 7th rounder. More than that? Nope.

I'd first try to see if Dallas would pay us to take him off their hands to open up some cap flexibility. Not the way we had to give up a 2nd with Staal but maybe trading up to a 3rd from a 5th or something. With his limited NTC and high cap hit the number of places he could wind up is probably pretty slim.

here is something not talked about. What trades will Drury make to help the Wolfpack? Those trades matter too. Maybe a guy like McBain could help the Wolfpack to get him used to the pro game??

Yup. We shouldn't be giving up anything for him quite frankly. Thats a big cap hit and not many teams can take on that salary.

I think a Kessel / Radulov type is pretty possible as the fallback to Copp/Lehkonen but really can't complain about any of it. Assuming they don't overpay for any of those guys anyway.
I think this is exactly the type of deal the Rangers will be looking at. It's a major sellers market for guys who have small cap hits (via retention or just a small salary to begin with) but it's looking like a buyers market for teams who can take on high paid depth players. Rentals like Radulov or a D-man like de Haan could probably be had for peanuts. It would be nice to upgrade the bottom of the roster with some vet rentals for the playoffs without giving up anything that hurts. Hopefully Drury can find some nice pick ups that way and save the prime assets for filling the long term needs like 2C.
