Ranger need to find the next Kessel, Seguin, etc. Good player who wants out of wherever he's playing.

Not sure who that is without doing a deep dive..but we have the assets to make a move ike that... And it's something Gorton basically hinted at.

Nylander might be a good grab this off-season.

A guy I'd be intrigued by is someone like Huberdeau if he were indeed available. If Florida was looking to cut cap, the Rangers could formulate a package that doesn't include any NHL players. Not many teams have the ability to take on close to $6m without sending anything back.

Nylander is a good one but I have a feeling the Leafs are more likely yo hold on to him and move someone like Kapanen.

Would anyone gamble on taking Brandon Saad from the Hawks? 2 more years @ $6m per season. He's on pace for about 42-45 points this season. The Hawks may be interested in getting more cap space to work with.

This is an odd thing to bring up for several reasons.

First of all, most defencemen score only a handful of goals in a season so a goal scoring drought is hardly an indicator of much in and of itself.

Secondly, considering that he is tied for the team lead in points over the past 16 games with 13 I wouldn't use him as an example of a young player slowing down.

Gotta be careful there -- secondary assists are usually not reproducable

I know of an elite player that wants out of Ohio...

Kreider, Andersson and Pionk for Nylander and a 3rd? Yes or no, and who’s says no?
I don't know about that. I feel like that's a lot.

If we could somehow include Shattenkirk and get back Liljegren

Has Nylander every played on his off-wing?

So McKenzie is saying the Rangers want to get better fast? Is McKenzie usually right about the Rangers?
Moreso than others, he's also not the only person reporting it. But I am not surprised that the Rangers are going to be in on him. When you have the chance to add elite level skill it's tough to pass it up.

McKenzie generally has a good pulse on us, at least when it comes to the draft.

The way that reads is a bit speculative, though. He says “don’t be surprised”, not “the Rangers are going to heavily pursue Panarin”, so it seems more like a guess.

I think the Bobfather is misreading Gorton’s approach. I don’t think he’s going to spend big money for players outside the timeline. I continue to think he’s looking to use some of the assets on younger players that fit the timeline who may become too expensive for their current teams.

What is the timeline? If the timeline is further ahead than you seem to think, Panarin makes sense. He mentioned that the FO doesn't want this to turn into a long-term thing where it takes 5 or more seasons.

I could see something like that, but that would be in a bad contract for a bad contract. Rangers get Saad, 'Hawks get Shattenkirk or Smith.

How does Panarin make sense? You are talking about a 7-8 year contract at around $11m. You are also going to pay him to come to a team that will hopefully begin to be competitive in another few years. So he is getting big dollars to waste the prime of his career. Then when the Rangers are ready to compete, they would have wasted several years of his peak and begin to pay him for when his play begins to level off. How many of those 5-6 years will his play still dictate that he gets paid $11m?

I'm listening to Hockey Central at Noon from last Friday and the guys are discussing the advantage a guy like Reaves gives Vegas in a 7 game match-up with anyone in the West. Wilson is a similar difference-maker in the East although Ferland is similar. I am pretty sure we read the Rangers were interested in Reaves as a UFA last year. Based on them signing McLeod I would believe they at least inferred.

The game has moved away from the big guys who can't skate. The unicorns in today's game are the big guys who can hit, intimidate and play the game, specifically in the playoffs. These guys are very hard to find. I wonder if the Rangers would still be interested in a player who could fill a similar role. Gorton and Quinn seem to like the idea of bringing a more physical game consistently.

We already have Lemieux. That’s our guy.

If you *must* move out one of these guys, I'd make it Fast. Will be 28 a couple months into next season, so he's not old but not exactly young, has a totally reasonable contract for next season before free agency, and is an established, know quantity who is also very consistent. I think a lot of teams could conceivably be interested in a guy like him, particularly at this price.

Again, this is if we have to move someone.

Agree, IF one of three - Strome, Names and Fast - had to be moved then I'd (reluctantly) make it FAST.

Gorton isn’t signing players willy nilly to accelerate the rebuild. He isn’t promising any big signings to speed up the process.

Strome has a high cap hit. $3.2M.

Technically, his cap hit for us is 4m, since we retained salary on Spooner's deal for the exact amount between both AAVs, and the contracts expire the same summer

Oh no! Throw Bobby Mac on the banned list too.

Any one who thinks the Rangers are trying to improve is an old regime fool who don't know Gorts and doesn't have the patience to understand we're still -2 years into a 5 year rebuild.

... If Strome is a solid third line type, I'm perfectly okay with that. I don't really see the need to take what's working, trade it for a middling return, and then attempt to replace what we already have via free agency...

This is an important point that gets missed time and time again. $3.5 - $4 range is much smaller relative to the current levels of salary cap and definitely won't guarantee a better or even equal UFA fit.

I always love when they start inventing terms and phrases. It makes it feel like a kiddie show:

"Boys and girls, today's phrase of the day is 'soft rebuild'. That's when your GM isn't stupid enough to come out and say, 'Yeah, this is going to take time. You may want to consider not investing in season tickets or jerseys for a while', and when a team magically finds a path forward that allows them to only require two years to get things in order."

Just once, I'd love for Gorton to come and say, "Yeah, rebuilding sucks and it takes a while. It requires a lot of patience and there aren't any shortcuts. And for all the middle-management people out there who can't reach the top of their own professions, but who hop online and somehow know how to manage a $1.55 billion sports franchise, could you please sit down and shut the **** up? You ain't that knowledgeable. Please stop auditioning for the psychic friends network and trying to read the tea leaves 'bout what I'm saying. Get back to your job and stop trying to front like you'd be even mildly successful at doing what I do. I've seen your trade proposals and prospect rankings. You don't know me, you can't touch me, and you sure as hell can't be me. In fact, the only thing you've convinced me is that access to birth control options should never be in question in this country, and that I wish your parents had chosen differently. Because your life should've stayed capped in the bottle of Jack your pops was drinking, when he caught a glimpse of your mother as she finished up her set at the club that Tuesday morning."

And Gorton should do a mic drop and swagger out of the press conference.

BEST. SEASON. EVER.

All this talk about trading into the top-2 or 3

The best way would’ve been to lose. Increase your odds of being there organically and if not, a shorter move.

But people weren’t interested in that because we were playing X team tonight and “**** those guys I hate that fracking team and their fans”

So short sighted.
Fans wanting to win or lose a game has no effect on if the game is won or lost.

Our roster is bad. We’ve shipped out Stepan, McDonagh, Miller, Nash, Grabner, Zucc and Hayes all primarily for futures.

This is us losing.
