Id be interested to know how our bottom 9 or bottom 6 scoring stacks up with the rest of the league. I feel like we get ZERO offense from our bottom 6 this season. Or from our defense.

As of now, 2019 2nd round picks traded:
CAR has BUF
NYI has CGY
MON has CBJ (thru VGK)
SJS has FLA
NJD has NSH
DET has NYI (thru VGK)
FLA has PIT

2 2nd rounders look appealing at this time that are "contenders"

Worth noting that the higher of the two 2nds the Sharks have is gojng to Ottawa as a part of the Karlsson deal. Meaning the Sharks only have one pick they could trade.

I know a second round pick ain’t nothing to scoff at but Brian Boyle got a second and we supposedly can’t even get a late first for Zucc. Hope he comes with a decent prospect then.

A player picked in the 2nd has about an 18% chance of being a full time NHL player - if a 2nd is the centerpiece of a Zucc trade it absolutely is something to scoff at.

And I've been saying, all along, that that's not enough. Assuming this is a playoff team that Zooks is being traded to, what are we looking at here, a pick 44-60 and a prospect? With our cap space, I'd rather keep him around and take a hard pass on assuming some shit contract that weighs down the team next year.

The likelihood of 44-60 turning into something decent, much less another Zuccarello, is pretty bad and you can talk about "assets" and picks all you want but a trade like that likely doesn't make the team better and, more likely, makes it worse. JG's focus should be to make the team better.

The question shouldn't be 50-60 point Zuccarello or a 2nd+prospect. It should be:

a. Nothing
b. 2nd + prospect

or if Zuccarello would sign an extension:

a. 32-36 year old Zuccarello
b 2nd + prospect

Some of those things are Tampa’s problem. Allow me to address the two on the Ranger’s side

1. The “mindset” probably isn’t that they can’t compete next year, but hopefully the short term realities are also part of that mindset. Speaking of mindsets, having a player with Callahan’s on the roster with a coach like Quinn will help instill a work ethic in these kids that will last a long time.

He'll be a real influencer in the 20 games he ends up playing.

2. July without a dollar to spend? Cap is going open, it isn’t really a problem for the rangers, and - most importantly - I hope they don’t spend a dime

I don't think the Rangers are on the 5 year rebuild train, so I'd be really surprised if they twiddle their thumbs this summer waiting for their kids to grow up.

We'll see.

What could Buffalo or San Jose offer?

I know San Jose has a barren prospect pool. Not sure what Buffalo's deal is.

Keep in mind, ultra elite of the elitiest, Nikita Kucherov, was a late 2nd. The more kicks at the can the better.

The Rangers aren't adept at find Kucherov's and Datsyuk's in later rounds than 1st.

Matter of fact, they aren't adept at drafting "finds" like that at all, even in the 1st.

In either, it should really be:

b. 2nd+prospect+cap space in the summer for better a better player
No player we could sign this summer would provide value per $ than Zuccarello does. We would pay much more than we are currently and hope to get the same or similar production that we are currently. Replacing Zucc with a UFA is a losing proposition.

"only" a second for Zucc seems a bit weird considering Nash got a 1st but I guess Nash still had the feeling of being a goal scorer and better player about him

The "better" players at wing all already make more than Zuccarello does and will make more than he will after all is said and done this summer. Who are you signing with that? Stone? Panarin? Skinner? Eberle? They're all going to get paid. Unless Staal and Smith are miraculously dumped, I don't see them in Panarin's future.

If you’re using Datsyuk, you can’t leave out Hank. In the recent past that may be the case but I’ll take the picks regardless.

We most likely won't find that caliber of player in the 2nd, but we've been pretty good at finding Dubinsky/Anisimov/Tyutin/Callahan/Hagelin types in later rounds. Still don't want to trade Zucc for a 2nd and a meh prospect though.

The Rangers have had decent luck with goalies in their history.

They've had shit luck with forwards from 1st round out. It's almost astounding the lack of franchise players, particularly at forward, that they've (not) drafted in 40 years.

It all depends on the prospect. A young player who is developing well is worth more than a 2nd rounder usually. There’s more time to identify if the player has a future in the NHL.

People say the Rangers need to take more shots at higher offensive talent in the draft. A great way to do that is to have more picks.
