As unfortunate as it is, he would provide a cost effective solution as that big body would physical defenseman the team has been missing for a while.

Maybe one of the depth wingers the Rangers have for him would be a useful deal for both sides as Colorado gets some more depth scoring and the Rangers get a big body defenseman to fill that hole

The team hasn’t been missing that in any way that needs them to target it via trade at this point in the rebuild process. You look to fill in “missing pieces” when you’re ready to compete, not when you’re still in the asset accumulation phase (with the exception of adding elite talent).

Also, he’s cost effective today, but he won’t be tomorrow. He’s only 2 years away from UFA status. His next contract is going to be in the $4m-$5m range.

Eh, I’m not sure he gets more than $3m-$3.25m. I’d give him a longer deal, like 4 years.

Who in the system, as sad as this is, plays a style remotely similar to Zadorov? Teams are going to be falling all over themselves in the offseason for Ferland. Teams are finding they need some bigger body players who can change momentum and keep opposing players heads up. I just see it as a need the Rangers have been unable to fill for years. Half a year of McQuaid isn’t doing it long term.

If it’s not in the system now, that doesn’t mean it won’t be later. It’s not a factor. The teams that are going to be targeting Ferland are competitive teams that feel he’s a missing piece. It won’t be teams who are in the depths of a rebuild.

A legitimate 2nd pairing D isn’t getting $3m on a contract that takes him 2 years into UFA and if he isn’t even that, then he’s not worth another thought.

I don’t even really disagree that they’ve lacked a player like this. I just think that what we’ve lacked in the past has nothing to do with what players we bring in today.

Zadorov? He gets third pairing ice time in Colorado and among the softest usage of any Avalanche defender while providing absolutely nothing offensively and historically getting drastically outshot/outscored while on the ice.

But hes big and hits people.

Listen, I'd love to have someone who is big and hits people on the defense.... Only if they can do the requisite things required by a defenseman to be good at defense.

Zadorov is NOT that.

Friedman edited his 31 thoughts to say he has heard Colorado may be interested in Namestnikov. That would be interesting to see what they may give up. He’d be someone they get for a couple of years and be a nice depth option. Perhaps they tho k he could be a nice compliment to two of their top guys allowing them to split up that top line?

As uninterested as I am in Bowers, that would be a good get for a guy like Names. Comes with the added bonus of having chemistry with Quinn. Also allows us to shop around Hayes some more and see what we can get from some bigger spenders than Sakic.

Namestnikov being the name makes sense as to why they may be looking in their AHL team. Perhaps a guy like Greer + a pick makes some sense. Maybe the Colorado 2nd. They have 2 1st’s so they may be more apt to trade their 2nd this year for some help. Moving Namestnikov would crest some space on the roster and some cap flexibility going into the offseason.

I'm gonna be honest here, outside of the Rangers and maybe Chicago and McDavid, I know f*** all about most other teams. How the hell do most of you (seemingly) know so much about other teams' players? I couldn't be f***ing bothered to keep track.

800+ players is an awful lot to keep track of for fantasy GM scenarios.

I read some of these posts and keep thinking to myself... are we talking about the same Nikita Zadorov?

He’s an alright player and probably is due for improvement as he moves into his prime, but he’s not worth a second thought.

Everytime there's a physical defenseman being floated in trade rumors there's always a certain contingent of the board that says: "that's the type of player we haven't had for a while." Then the team gets said player, he sucks, and the pattern starts over again from the beginning next season. Amazing.

See: Smith, Brendan

In a similar vein all this Oilers talk makes me remember that people actually wanted to sign Lucic

Not interested in Zadorov as a main piece in a trade. I don’t doubt for a second that this may have been a serious offer - Avs give up an asset, even though he was drafted within the Top 15 several years ago, that they wouldn’t mind parting with to get Hayes. To get Hayes, I wouldn’t mind parting with him either if I were an Avs fan. I don’t like it from a Rangers perspective.

Sounds like a mile high version of girardi...

For years now, every time a player of Zadorov's ilk is available, we hear about how this is what we "lack."

All I ever see on the Rangers is a surplus of this type of player.

No clue where he's supposed to be positioned, severe lack of offense, goes out of position (even further) to throw meaningless hits, acts tough, best skill is being tall, gets outshot, gets outscored.

We lead the f***ing league in those types of players and have for a long time. It's sort of our thing.

This is not going to be a popular opinion on this board.
It's the most liked post on this page.

This is Friedman's edit

(EDIT: Several Avs fans have reached out to suggest this may be about Vladislav Namestnikov, not Hayes.)

What does that mean? Regular fans tweeted or emailed him. Sometimes he discusses how NHL executives read his 31 Thoughts column and they let him know that he is wrong or give him more information about something he wrote.

Namestnikov has one more season left on his contract at $4M AAV. $4M salary. He has 4 goals this season. What is that worth? Maybe he isn't the player(production wise) he was in TB, but he should have more than 4 goals in 44 games.

Yes Namestnikov is a huge disappointment, but it might be the system the time he has been in NY and style. They could keep him to try to build value next season since he won`t return much now and it will help the tank and rebuild.
