Honestly with Fox we are gonna have to give the 9.5 mill, i just hope its for 8 years. With the cap comparables that 9.5 is a bargain unfortunately given he's the norris winner already.

We're gonna end up with Strome as our 1C for the next 5 years at this rate of wage inflation.

Need Makar to win the Norris next year so the comparison to Fox is even more spot on. I’d be fine with 9.5/8 for Fox.

Not that points are the be all end all, but I've never seen this much fuss over a player signing a market value contract.

True. Points aren't the be all and end all especially for a Dman but it seems the Dmen that are getting paid 8+ million are putting up significantly more points.

I'm not really seeing the Bargain that everyone else is.

5.75 over 8 years for a defensive defenseman is pretty expensive. He's a good player, but how good will he be when he loses half a step?

You will after this team turns into the Maple Leafs

I mean some of that just reinforces the concept that GM's mostly ignore advanced analytics.

2021 points, Norris trophy voting, and recent contract signing

Fox - 5 goals 42 assists - 1st in Norris voting - probably north of 9mil per
Makar - 8 goals 36 assists - 2nd in Norris voting - 9 mil for 6 year contract
Doug Hamilton - 10 goals 32 assists - 4th in Norris - 9 mil 7 year contract
Darnell Nurse - 16 goals 20 assists - 7th in Norris - 9.25 mil 8 year contract
Adam Pelech - 4 goals 10 assists - Tied 17th in Norris - 5.75 mil 8 year contract

Points matter. Pelech contract was a market value contract, nothing more.

Sure, he isnt a 9M total package dman, but he was objectively really really good

If I had to choose, I 100% re-up Zibs before the season starts. He will drop 50+ on his contract year then bend us over even more

If we are hell bent on resigning him then now is the time to do it.

But I’m not convinced we are.

Never said he wasn't good, I'm just not seeing the steal contract that people are crowing on about.

He's a defensive specialist who is a perfect fit for the system he plays in. He's not waiver wire material getting by in said system like some (Mayfield) but hes also the type of guy who ages terribly and his effectiveness will take a hit when he loses even a little bit of mobility. The contract is pretty fair, not some massive steal some have tried to frame it as.

Also wonder what his game will look like over 82 games in that system (goes for the rest of that crew as well.) I didn't think he had a great playoff.

The contract assumes last year is his new normal. He never performed like that before. Dom’s model, for example had him worth 1.2 GSVA in 18-19 and 0.9 in 19-20. He now has him projected better than that each of the next seven years. Seems like that’s expecting a lot and is very heavily weighting the previous year

Pelech's cap hit is fair, but the gross part of that contract is the term. Giving any kind of defensive defenseman an 8 year contract is risky. It will be really interesting to see what the Rangers do with Lindgren once his bridge is up.

Sorry if this has been discussed a lot - but is it crazy to already give Fox the C.. or? Crosby was given it what, during his 2nd season? And Fox is a very mature player, obviously a few years older than Sid was.

I'm against Kreider for captain. Mika too but to a lesser extent. Captain Trouba always sounded terrible to me. And Panarin.. yeah no need to go there.. but will; it would be the equivalent of giving Jagr the C because he was our best player, except maybe worse.

I don't think anyone is gonna be tricked into thinking last season was what Zibs contract should be based on.

Imagine if Fox set a standard and took 5 yrs @ $7.5M per or something. He can still make bank when we're forced to pay market price for him later on when he's still only 28-29.

Chances of this are 2.3% by my calculations.

The criticism of Zibanejad as soft is ridiculous. He doesn't throw big hits and he doesn't grind much, but he is far from a perimeter player. His combination of strength, speed, and the ability to execute at speed makes him almost impossible to handle when he's on his game. We saw a lot of that two years ago when he would barrel through defenses on a regular basis. He just did not have that in him last year except for a handful of games. I hope we get that Zibanejad back this year, because it was incredible to watch.

Mika is the best center the Rangers have had since Messier yet half the fanbase wants to push him out the door for magic beans
