Flames Senior VP/Hockey Operations Don Maloney was interviewed during the 2nd period of the Flames broadcast last night. The Flames had their pro scouting meetings over the weekend and Maloney said he will be hitting the road to scout the players the Flames discussed in their meetings. Don't be surprised if Maloney pops up in New York sometime this week.

When is Hayes returning to the lineup? He skated last Thursday in a red no contact sweater. The Rangers were off on Friday. Back to back games this weekend. The Rangers are off today. There was no mention of Hayes coming back tomorrow night on the broadcasts over the weekend. The Rangers will probably want Hayes to skate in practice with a contact sweater. The Rangers should sit him out until after the all star break.

The Rangers have Carolina tomorrow night. They have won 7 out of their last 8 games. They lost in TB in a game they should have won or have gotten one point. Carolina took two dumb penalties and TB scored on both PP's. They followed up the TB loss with home wins against Buffalo and Nashville. They never win at MSG.

They’re due. The last time they won at the garden was Jeff Skinners rookie season.

5 in 8 for our guys with a decent bit of travel mixed in. It may not be in this game, but they’ve got a really flat effort coming in one of the next 3.

Wraparound king!!!

Now plays in the Korean league, but I was sitting behind him last season when he was playing for Amur against Jokerit in Helsinki

There's a Korean hockey league!?

That's so.....awesome.

Exactly this. Next year they will likely lose Gardiner, the next Marleau, lost JVR and Bozak from last year. They need a dman or two, a vet dman atleast and they should be all in on this year because they may never be as good as they are now, need a dman at the deadline.

Yup. Their defense is good enough for now but it’s not good enough to win it all and they need to make a major upgrade there.

They weren't flat last night.

They had plenty of energy (considering how much they've played), they just got owned along the walls and in the dot.
Which, coincidentally, is mostly where Quinn has always had his MO of being tougher.

But no, Rongos going to goon it up now b/c Quinn wants old-school no-skill hockey.

A fun thing to do is to check the Wikipedia pages for various national teams who you wouldn't expect to exist, they have their biggest victories/defeats and they're absurd.

I cite as evidence the Indian national team, who lost 14-0 to Thailand in their first international game, but whose worst defeat was a 39-2 drubbing by Kuwait, whose biggest defeat was a 44-1 loss against Japan in THEIR first international game.

And so on.

“Losing Depth” is what turns a good team into a mediocre team or worse. Teams without depth don’t win championships.

Nah, teams not having expensive depth does not mean they don't have good depth.

Hockey is a strong-link sport

Strong and Weak Links: Talent Distribution within Teams

Top end talent is more important for winning than having depth. As long as you're not Edmonton and are able to have solid young players on entry level deals (Sheary, Rust, Saad etc.) or can find underrated gems for cheap (Ennis, Kempny, Bonino etc.) that can play competently you're literally always better off keeping your stars.

As a Rangers fan we know how much more difficult it is to get a Marner or Kane level player than a Kreider level one.

Of all of the front offices in the league I'd expect to realize this most exactly, Dubas Pridham & Gillman are probably at the top.

Matthews & Marner are 21, Nylander is 22 still years away from their primes, Rielly is 24 just entering his, Tavares Kadri & Andersen are 28, still in their for another 3-4 years.

As long as they don't sign stupid contracts like Chicago did with Seabrook, Edmonton did with Lucic or the Kings did with Brown I don't really think the 18-19 Leafs being the peak of this incarnation of them is very likely.

It's not very logically genuine to point out who they're losing as if those slots are going to be filled with an army of Brendan Smith's. Filling in a core as good as there's is with draft picks on ELCs or players like Tyler Ennis who are making league minimum to be on pace for 17 goals over 82 games is enough for them to be a contender for a long time I'd imagine.

Like if Chiarelli was their GM, sure, then it's probably their peak but their management group is some of the best on paper in the league imo, then again as a computer scientist who makes AI for a living I'm obviously very biased in terms of what I value in a management group.

Absolutely is and I appreciate it a whole lot you know!

Random things like that happen without planning sometimes. When I attended a Sparta Prague game in November, I saw Steven Delisle play. And at a KHL game in October I met Mikhail Pashnin while we were in line to order beers

Dallas just made a move. Shore for Cogliano. I think we're going to see Nill make a few more moves. Gaglardi is not happy and probably wants to see a culture change.

I think Zucc would fit in nicely there:popcorn:

Not sure if you subscribe to the Athletic but dear god, Carpinello absolutely destroyed last nights performance in his article.
Been considering subscribing to it for the Baseball coverage. I like the group they have for that.

Also, I like Devin Shore, wish we couldve gotten him.

Both the Ducks and Stars need a shakeup. Shocked to see Cogliano traded

Why does Dallas make that trade? Cogs is just a warm body with a NTC about to kick in. And 8 years older than Shore.

I just hope that people understand this when they argue against tanking. Sure, another couple of late firsts will be nice, but even if they pan out, you have to remember that the Rangers are going to be competing against a team like that that is dripping with elite talent throughout the forward corps.

The rebuild will not be complete until this team has its Matthews. We seem to be getting "lucky" by sucking in a year where a talent like that is available at the top of the draft. Follow through with it please.
