I prefer 3 lines of regular minutes with a 4th line capable or killing penalties and giving high energy when the team is flat. Ours is kinda crappy.

Wild Fan here. With Ryan Strome’s emergence, is there a deal to be had around Chytil, or is he still a long term top 6 C for you guys?

Long term, he's the #2 center for this team for as long as Zibanejad is here and producing.

And if they get another center with bigger promise, he's someone that can move to wing. He's our only real center "prospect" with top 6 upside at the moment.

You need 4 lines, but as others have said what comprises that 4th line matters. Just to have bodies there that play 3 to 5 minutes a night is not effective and in those small amounts of minutes those players become a liability.

You need that 4th line for energy, penalty killing and have the ability to pop in the occasional goal. They should be able to go up against a teams #1 or #2 line and hold the line.

Having that capability could give a team the slight edge at game 28 of the playoffs to win the cup due to the extra incremental rest the teams star players got over the course of the season/playoffs.

I've been advocating a 4th line of Lemieux - Howden - Fast. If the team has that kind of offensive depth the team will be set up for success.

How’s that Quinn’s issue? He plays who he got on the roster.

I of course don’t know exactly how things have played out, but there are so many options available regarding the construction of a 4th line. If a coach requested something, I am fairly certain that a GM could deliver. I have nothing against McKegg — but he should be the 3rd/4th string, not center that line.

Also, like, I can guarantee that there aren’t 30 other coaches in this league who would be satisfied with what Brendan Smith brings to a NHL team.

They should just play Smith over Staal 5v5 and live with the 1-2 unforced errors per game that seem to be an intrinsic part of his game.

Since that is not an option, I kind of get why they dress him at forward though since he is an extremely good defenceman on the PK. His impacts are very strong throughout his career and I'd go so far as to say he is probably the best PK defenceman on the team even with the understanding that he is usually not getting the PP1 assignments. Your 4th line won't bring any value anyway since they are out there taking TOI from better players (and you can distribute TOI over three lines without asking too much of any one player), so using it to dress special teams specialists is probably the most effective way to use the roster spots.

Though I can see an argument for a DZ specialist line that is solely used to take defensive draws, win the puck, take it out of the zone, circle back with possession and change to allow a skilled line to start their shift with the puck. Having a 4th line that tries to "establish a forecheck" and take any sort of risks offensively is not something you want at all.

Chytil's upside is somewhere around where Zibanejad is right now. Some players of course don't reach their upside but there are a lot of comparables between the two--both are big and strong and very strong skaters with excellent puck skills. Filip's just begun to figure out his size and strength are an asset. Filip has also made strides in his overall game. His biggest weaknesses last year were his poor defensive coverage and face-offs. The face-offs are still an issue. His defensive play has improved dramatically. It took Mika several years to get it all together. Filip has a similar skillset. I don't think I'd be inclined to trade him.

So if they do deal Skjei doesn’t that leave LD super thin? Kinda think they have to get another LD back

I’m fine w 2 of Lindgren , Hajek , Rykov , Ruenanen next yr but 3?

Feeling a calm before the storm vibe.

Perhaps wishful thinking on my part, but I could see Skjei or Buchnevich moved later this month, if not sooner.

So many intriguing - and difficult decisions to make. I completely trust JD - there's no one I'd rather have at the helm. Gut feeling is that he continues to let Kreider/Georgiev play out. No deal there, but he does pull the trigger on a talent swap (see above on 76 and/or 89).

There are plenty of reasons for it. Keep players fresh, replacements for in game injuries, more combinations to change lines around, more options to discipline players. Much tougher to bench a forward if you only have 9 forwards dressed. Also allows for role players like penalty killing forwards. There are reasons that "its always been this way".

You wouldn’t have 9 forwards dress. The league is obviously not going to downsize rosters. You’ll still have 18 guys just made up of 9 regular F/ 6 regular D and then the other three have various roles such as PP/PK/Faceoff specialists or whatever and can obviously fill in in case of injury. They would likely be young guys on 2 way deals. Your AHL vet type who wouldn’t care about the lack of ice time considering they get a huge salary increase by being in the NHL.

you would still do all the same things except not play an objectively bad line for 6-10 mins/game and you can funnel a larger percentage of your cap space into key players.

Ryan Strome would be available before Chytil in my opinion.

with Lias MIA, really not sure if Strome will remain or be moved. If Strome would shoot more he could make this decision easier IMO. Right now, he’s not a bonafide #2 playmaking or scoring center yet there is nobody else that can replace him.

This schedule with the Canucks/Avs/Blues/Islanders x 3/Devils is going to determine what this team does in terms of being a buyer or seller. Very tough schedule and the potential for the Rangers to be TKO'd by months end if they don't get otherworldly goaltending or tighten up.

If Calgary is interested in Skjei because there's a huge turnover on D for them after this season, make it happen ever for a combo of a B-level prospects/second round/roster player on short contract.

It's all about term brother and that makes Buch very easy to move and Skjei very hard to move.

Skjeis got value. He’s a second pairing guy. Fact of the matter is he probably gets supplanted there bc that’s where guys like hajek/miller/etc project to play soon enough. And he’s getting exposed playing 1st line matchups, which can only hurt his value.

Going to be an interesting month and a half cause they could pull off a deal with guys they are not sold on long term

Buch May be one of them

One of my childhood friends said it best "middle-six secondary scorers in the NHL are quite expendable and traded at least 2-4 times in their carer."

That's Buch.

Yeah that’s pretty much where I’m at right now

Skjei can be frustrating but at this point he’s a known quantity. The rest of these guys are unknown for the most part

No way Rangers should even consider being buyers.

What do you think Georgiev’s value is IF he is traded which I think he will with Shesty almost ready?
