Don't look now, but Karlsson is at 38 points in 42 games after a pretty horrid start in SJ. Perhaps the rumors of his demise were overblown?
God forbid it takes time for him to adjust to a new system and new teammates.

I still want him over Panarin and any other UFA this summer.

He’s a stud. He just wasn’t getting the ice time with burns there that he was used to. Now they’ve figured out the balance.

I think he’s a NYR target this summer if he hits free agency.

Of course it all depends on the request but if the Rangers can't move Shattenkirk and one of Smith/Staal without taking back much salary, they have no business really signing anyone

The deal outlined had us unloading Smith. In return the Rangers would take on the shorter, but higher cap hit contracts of Hanzal and Nichuskin. It's a way to remove the cap from the Rangers books a year early. It would be a smart move.

It adds 3.5M to the cap in a year expected to have a much stronger FA class at the top than most. No guarantees anyone nearly as good becomes available a year or two later.

Should the Rangers really be signing anyone if they are still carrying around 2 years of ~$20m in cap space tied up in Staal/Smith/Shattenkirk? They need to find a way to get out from those contracts as soon as possible. Losing a year of Smith's contract will help. Cap space is valuable no matter when it arrives.

I would not necessarily say this is true. If the year you have cap space is in the year of a bad FA crop it can very often lead to bad signings just because the team doesn't want to let space go to waste. Such as the years with Lucic/Ladd/Okposo/Alzner/Hanzal/Eriksson/Backes being among the top players available. It is far more valuable to have it in a year where you are almost certain the class will be very good.

I mean, if there isn't anyone to sign, they can wait, or look to make a trade with the available cap space, etc. They aren't competing for a Cup this year, nor are they expected to next year, nor are they really expected to the following year either. They have a lot of building to do before they should really be looking to pay top dollar on 7 year deals to anyone. Now if someone wants to give a discount, possibly. But I am doubtful Panarin or Karlsson will be giving discounts.

I'm not seeing why Kreider would take a penny less than what Evander Kane received. 7 years x $7m per season. I would actually expect him to make more because he doesn't have any attitude issues and he has a better track record of producing.

So let's assume the Rangers feel he will ask for 7 years x $7m per season because the market has been set. What do they do?

I'd say you sign him and don't look back. Maybe agree on 6 year contract at $7.5m.

However, whether you agree with this or not, my main issue is that this is NOT a decision for today. I'd hate the Rangers to be in the position later on where they trade Kreider now and then would be missing exactly this type of player from their roster. Kreider checks too many boxes to say he's replaceable.

What were the Rangers prepared to agree to with Callahan, an inferior player who began showing wear and tear?

I think that they are staying far away from any long-term UFA contract.

If the NYR aren't competing for a Cup next year or the year after, then why would they buyout anyone? Or trade anything of value to remove a bad contract to anyone, when those contracts will be gone in two years. Why would they get Karlsson or Panarin for that matter?

The front office has at least two more years to sort out what they will be in need of and by then they should have a better idea and the aforementioned players will be different players.

2 less years of their peak to pay for.

He's great, but he'll be 29 this May. Panarin just turned 27. Considering we are still a couple years away from contending give me Panarin.
