Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XX (WTF are we going to do this Off-Season edition)

Vally for head coach.
Vally's too smart to leave his cushy analyst gig for this entitled bunch of quitters. Maybe when there's finally a complete turnover of the roster & some exciting prospects in the system again he'll decide he wants to be making some in hockey ops. Until then, I think he stays on the sidelines where he gets paid to offer his opinion from the studio or the comfort of his living room.

He's shown that he'll try. He coughs it up like he had bad seafood. Same thing with Kakko and his puck control that we kept hearing about.

He just isn't that good.

If Drury was smart (he isnt) he would hire Vally to be an "advisor to the President" or some shit. I'm not convinced that he'd know what actual players to acquire but he has his finger on the pulse of what ails the team generally.

Too bad he showed nothing remotely resembling this from the moment he signed that contract extension. This team has a giant leadership problem, but at some point it's up to Laf to decide if he wants to play his entire career as a passenger or actually take the next step & become an all-star. After 5 years, so far last season was the outlier & he regressed hard to the mean.

He's definitely an asset that hopefully the org takes advantage of, if he wants more responsibility.

Definitely disappointed in his play this season. At least with Kakko I felt like we knew what he was which was a solid third line RW. With Laf, he gives you moments where he looks like an all star and then proceeds to float around the ice and dissappear for the next 15 shifts.

Last season Laf at least gave us a glimpse at what his potential is which is a solid top-6 wing who can elevate his game in the playoffs. I'm hoping it was just an overall down year for the entire team and a new coach will help turn the page.

It was as if last season the Rangers and the NHL had an unspoken agreement where they would be exempt from drug testing but only for one season...that was their window and this year reality came back in the form of a massive hangover.

Not a fan of Drury sticking around but his message today of wanting players that want to be here is the right tone for this team. I expect there will be very difficult and honest conversations come Monday about the expectations org has of its players and what type of commitment players will have to make in the offseason to get back to where they want to be. A lot of it will boil down to who we choose as coach and which UFAs we pickup but organic growth and development of players will be critical if we are looking to become a contender again

Honestly even the whole "Laf is SO FRUSTRATING, one minute he looks like a STAR and the next minute he looks like a plug" mantra is getting tiring.

He pretty much never looks like a star player. He never carries play on his own. He rarely creates his own opportunities. Expectations have been dampened so much that him being a semi-competent forward in conjunction with spending all his time on the ice with a top 10 forward in the world (Panarin) is enough to get people around here excited about him.

Vally needs to be hired to run the Scouting and Player Development offices. He clearly knows where the issues are. Offer him whatever he wants. Hire or by his company to become orgs analytics department. Start making the right decisions at the top and the players will be better.

I liked Laffy's game more before he got panarinitis
He hit, went to the front of the net and got garbage goals and cycled the puck
Lavi comes in and cements him to panarin and troch
We thought this unlocked his potential
But what really happened was panarin was so damn good he carried those 2.
But now Laffy thinks he can play like Panarin
Its all finesse without the skill panarin has
Laffy is a big kid. He needs to get back to playing like one
Its up to the next coaching staff to hammer this into him

Really Kreider's first few games in the playoffs were a mix bag. Some pretty good games and some what the f*** is he doing games where he was completely out of sync with his line mates racing around the rink with no real purpose and no idea who to take on the backcheck. The year after was spent mostly in Hartford and he didn't exactly light the world on fire there.

Valiquette is not really coaching material if he hasn't coached before. There are a lot of things that go into that and I'm sure Steven knows that and I'm sure he would decline if only for just that reason. By the way I looked at his list and 1. and 2. are actual things that can be done and 3. is more wish fulfillment. I'm not sure what he means by top tier coach either. Does he have anyone particular in mind?

Apparently Drury would like Mike Sullivan---is he top tier? Well he is if you have Crosby, Malkin, Letang, etc. etc. in their prime. Though he hasn't won anything yet Knoblauch having McDavid and Draisatl certainly increases his chances. The point is coaches are often made by their players. There might be exceptions like Al Arbour or Scotty Bowman but even those coaches always had the luxury of having exceptional players on their teams. There are some Bowman Canadiens teams that have like 9/10/11 Hall of Famers and some of his Red Wings teams were probably pretty close to that. Keep in mind also that these days with 32 teams and a cap ceiling to be mindful of there's only so many exceptional players a team can accommodate and remain functional. Something more of a balancing act.

Last season Laf was showing some flashes. This season they were almost non existent after the first 15 games or so. Next season may tell the story for his career direction.
