Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

That's fair but where are we in 4 years? There's also no guarantee Perreault can do what Peterka (or even Lafreniere fwiw) has shown by the age of 23. Im just not sure Perreault totally fits with the direction the team is looking to go stylistically.
There is certainly no guarantee, 100% correct.
Having a Fox and a GP on a grittier team seems like good balance. Hey if GP for JJP were to happen, I wouldn't need to be on suicide watch, hahaha, I'd just be very wary.

Sell high? The Rangers got Fox for two lottery tickets and they're going to get a decade of elite play.

We've already won the transaction, just let the rest of it play out.

Selling high would be moving Schneider now before he gets closer to free agency. It also might be moving Miller, but with the current LD situation, it's highly unlikely.

I’m not against Igor and JTM, I’m saying they have big term at advancing ages. Fox is at the end of his age 26 season. He’ll be fine.

I still say I have to see Zib waving to believe. It’s not impossible but not as easy as some make it out to be
I still say Zib is going nowhere as long as Kreider is here.

The team trading the best player in the deal hardly ever gets great value. You trade away great players when your hands are tied, or when you are getting a great player back. Trading a great player for a collection of pieces just because you think it is a good time to sell like you’re on wallstreet will more often than not set a franchise back.

I have no idea but Rick Nash was a really good player for us. Significantly better than quite a few former Rangers people still pine over.
Was he? He wilted in the playoffs when it mattered and put up a single decent regular season of 69 points. Otherwise he put up 35-40 points and was frequently injured. I remember him looking more like a shell of his CLB self when he was here outside of that one good NYR season.

Im still waiting for these "trade Fox" people to come up with a deal or player that doesn't make us a significantly worse team. Im very open-minded.

Yes. Concussion issues slowed him down toward the end but he was a very good player for us. Panarin has also sucked in the playoffs for us but that doesn't mean he hasnt been a good player.

isn't that an upgrade?
This is true.
I would be all over Peterka this summer if Im Drury. the exact type of offensive talented we need in our top 6. We should offer sheet him if possible. He has the upside to be a Guentzel type scorer for us long term. Would be really solid on Panarin's wing for a year.

In a trade, Gabe is the guy to move for him. Hate to say it but you trade an undersized prospect for a sure thing in a similar age bracket.

I think Buffalo would want people who are in the NHL now rather than someone else who is a prospect.

And f*** Panarin.

Id assume Buffalo would take whatever high end asset they could get for a reportedly unhappy player who needs a new contract, but i get where you're coming from.

As for Panarin, Im assuming he's here for 1 more year with the NMC until he's not. If it were up to me Id deal him with retention just to move on.

If we're gonna entertain a Fox trade, what is the return? What player/s or kind of player/s are the target? Do we use Fox to target a top 5-10 F in the league, and then say f*** everything by using Perreault to go after a young promising 1D? @bobbop has mentioned trading K. Miller for a couple months now and I'd be all about seeing what he could return.

Just to throw some names/teams out there for the sake of it..

BUF - Tuch, Thompson, Power, Dahlin, Peterka
DET - Larkin, DeBrincat, Kasper, Seider, Raymond
MTL - Slafkovsky, Guhle, Hutson
OTT - Tkachuk, Batherson, Sanderson
ANA - Mintyukov, McTavish
MIN - Boldy, Rossi, Kaprizov, Faber
UTA - Keller, Cooley, Guenther, Sergachev, Kesselring

Nash was great for what he was. He was unbelievably good at even strength and one of the most prolific volume shooters ever.

He broke 70 points once and just never was what people wanted him to be. We knew that when we traded for him, and it's not really his fault that he was expected to be a superstar that he wasn't, just because the team never provided anything better.

I think levying that expectation on Panarin is way more realistic.

Schneider + for Peterka makes a lot of sense on paper
Seravalli was asked about the Peterka rumors from the deadline and said on his Frankly Speaking episode last week that he heard we were offering a roster player and a first. I wouldn’t be surprised if Schneider was the player at all, and it makes sense given the long-term deal for Fox and Borgen. I’m sure there was something else from Buffalo’s end too
