Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

So for me the worst scenario was not to be a seller. After the JT trade I thought if we're not making the playoffs the next worst thing would be to end up out of the playoffs 14th, 15th or 16th so we wouldn't have the option of taking our 1st rounder back this year. Either drop into the bottom 13 or somehow make the playoffs but don't be buying players we don't need on expiring contracts and don't be grabbing some longer term ? mark either. If they want to make the playoffs fine but move out the players you have to and don't take any shit back that you don't need.

I mentioned yesterday rosters that just don't pass the smell test on paper.

You can't tell me this is a contender. It's white rice with raw cauliflower.

Ethen Frank is a character in a hockey game that did not get licensed by the NHLPA.

No one can convince me differently.

... He can f***ing scoot though.

I really like their D collectively and that drove the turn around for them this year but even that group has fallen off quite a bit. They're ripe to be beaten in the opening around and everyone is going to be surprised pikachu face about it.

Even if they make it beyond that, they aren't surviving round 2.

Trading first rounders outside the lottery is a market inefficiency that these contenders constantly exploit to much success.

@mas0764 is about to initiate a seance.

He's the NHL's response to white Barry Bonds

Jesus, two 1sts, a 2nd, and a serviceable 4th line NHL player.

DRURY MAKE THE TRADES NOW WHILE IT'S A SELLERS MARKET.
Funny thing is I think there's more sellers than serious buyers.

Boeser and Brock Nelson sitting while all the assets go for other guys. Some seller is gonna be left in the cold.

yeah that's not happening.
The NHL is stagnant. It doesn't appeal to anybody that's not already into it.

I hope, that if the cap goes up the way they're projecting, that could change, but it's just a boring league right now.

That the at-large viewing audience wanted extreme parity is another thing they miscalculated. Look at the viewship for the Superbowl and for soccer leagues around the world. People can say whatever they want about hating 2 or 3 great teams at the top but that's what they tune in to watch.

The Four Nations was a huge hit, but if you bring in somebody new from that, who is now watching the NHL, and they were exposed to 4N rosters, they're gonna hate it when they're watching Alexis Lafreniere, Tomas Tatar, and Alaiksei Protas on teams' top lines.

Once Friday hits, the deals will be worse and worse (for the sellers). Have to get out ahead. Which we did for Lindgren and Vesey, but he's gotta keep going.

Drury is likely to be a buyer once the Reilly Smith deal happens. I want Kreider gone but it seems unlikely (reverse mush in effect)

Not only is the first round a bunch of re-runs, the absolute inevitability of the second round is even worse.

It would be Carolina or New Jersey again. That's already pretty much set barring an extreme shift in the standings.

And even if we caught Jersey, that's just Carolina in the first round and then Caps/Devils again in the second round.
You think about it as a negative whereas it's the opposite for NHL - it is by design that they wanted repeated series in earlier rounds to have rivalries to drive viewership (and then novelty would "take over" in Conference finals and SCF).
