I'm a bit surprised you mentioned top-6 and Berard at this point. He's barely had a handful of games that is not enough to make a call that he deserves a top-6 spot. It's as if you're making this call on Cuylle back in 2022-2023.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I just have a really good feeling about it. I think he has the skillset and style to make any line he's on better.

By himself, in a vacuum, maybe he's not a top six producer, but he's gonna be like a Hagelin where you put him with skilled players and all of a sudden that's one of your better lines.

2004 double draft as well. Spent #6 on a Goalie. Took Korpikoski at 19 and NJ took Zajac at 20.

Especially terrible since they had already drafted Henrik 4 years prior. I guess they didn't know for certain what they had in Lundqvist yet, but it makes blowing 6 OA on a goalie even worse.

...Edit: Coming into this season, Mika was ranked 9th in goals and 10th in points among all centers in the NHL over the past 5 seasons. I actually believe this fact will make heads turn in here. So yes, until this season we had a legit top 10 center.

If anyone's surprised they really haven't been paying attention: Zibanejad had been a legit 1C for the Rangers (ever since he officially replaced Stepan).

During his tenure here he's been known for slow starts that would typically last into early / mid-November. Last season was the first when it extended well beyond this early part of the season and really we never got to see him going on a burner where he'd produce at 1.2 or higher ppg rate, but career years from Panarin and Trocheck still helped Zibanejad get to decent regular season points total via whatever he accrued on PP.
The biggest difference we see now from earlier in the season is "aggressiveness" that manifests via constant engagement in a play and (or including) moving his feet to get to open spots to get pucks from JTM. Talent wise there's very little that separates these two

That’s pretty much exactly how I feel about Sykora. A Jesper Fast type role in the top 6, or a higher end 3rd liner and core PK guy

if the Rangers can get a LD young dman as a thanks, this can be worth something even if its a Mancini level, I mean he came out of nowhere. Not a bad thing if the Rangers can and will be willing to do this. Young dman is a need. Do the Rangers have to keep relying on Mackey and Harpur every season, this happens when you have little young AHL dman 20, 21 22 year old range.

I know most don’t like Harper, but that year he was up here for a few weeks. I think he did a decent job.

The NHLPA won't like that. They would want something in return for accepting that.

Rather than artificially limiting it, why not make use of the limits that are already in place? Protection clauses are only applicable for UFA years. If we are signing less UFAs to long contracts, we'll have less protection clauses by default.

Panarin, Kreider, Zib and Trocheck were all signed as UFAs. We traded for Miller, who is also on a UFA contract. All of them have/ protection clauses. Even Borgen, whom we just re-signed, has a protection clause. It's not a particularly onerous one, but still.

When our best players are all age 27+, they are going to get heavy protection clauses. If our core was younger, in their RFA years, we'd have less protection clauses as the mid-level and lower guys don't get as much protection.

The hope was that we would adopt this strategy with the rebuild, but that lasted all of a year before we were back to signing big names again. The league doesn't need to change the rules. We need to change our strategy.

I do not see the Rangers trading Kreider. Not at this deadline while is hurt and has had a down year, likely due to battling the injuries. It would be selling low. Plus he has the NTC.

Separately, if they win tonight, Drury could sell Smith and Buy at the same time tomorrow or Friday. Guys with some term even if only through next year.

yes, NHLPA will require something, and it will cost owners but it will be worth it as to roster flexibility -> better product -> improved fan satisfaction
