Agreed. leaves me wondering where Othmann fits long-term. Cuylle and berard have passed him and gabe is hot on his heels.
I am all for it. Didn't get a legit chance this year. If they don't next year then really gonna be frustrating.
We've talked before about Lafreniere having his own issues that he should be accountable for, but at the same time, I do see where the Rangers shoot themselves in the foot.

I'm not saying the kid is ruined, but if it continues into next year, you risk hurting momentum that's legitimately there, and you also risk changing the kid's perception of who he is.

You can make Gretzky a 4th liner if that's the box you seal him into.

It's been a small sample for Othmann, but to me he looks like a guy who needs to have the puck or at least be in the offensive zone consistently to be most effective. I have never gotten that impression from Cuylle and Berard, because they are better skaters and high intensity defensive players. Othmann's projection has always been top 6 offensive winger. He gets a lot of points on the PP in HFD (not a knock, some guys dont even get points on the PP). I think he's a trade piece before Friday. can we get that elusive young center for him? McLeod, Novak, Geekie. In all likelihood Kreider is making it through the deadline and is going to take that 3LW slot. Would be nice to add a speedy center who can mitigate his skating issues.

Othmann+Jones get it done?

Well it’s a small sample size, if he can keep it up for the rest of the season that would be good.

I do think the move to wing has helped, plus now playing with a good player in Miller who plays the right way, instead of a washed up Kreider or a lollygagging Panarin
I think the "sample size" argument is a bit hyperbole. Specially if you make that argument against his career which I dont believe (hope) you do. If you mean this current season, it still not a good argument imho. He had a couple of disastrous months before the break and since the break a couple of really good months.

I mean, this is not a rookie flash in the pan type of player. We are talking about a proven star player with multiple elite seasons in his backpack.

Edit: Coming into this season, Mika was ranked 9th in goals and 10th in points among all centers in the NHL over the past 5 seasons. I actually believe this fact will make heads turn in here. So yes, until this season we had a legit top 10 center.

I hear you, I guess the question is whether you think those deals cost us a cup.

I look at major rangers cup killers the past 30 years and I mostly see…

Cherepanovs passing
Nash, Richards, MSL declining faster than we wanted
Yandle being misused by the coach
Signing Boyle over Stralman

As the real things that maybe took a bit out of our chances to win it all.

McIlrath over Tarasenko.

An ELC Tarasenko during the "contention" years in the mid 2010's would have been a massive boost to that group.

Those teams mostly struggled to score goals in the playoffs and he's scored a bunch of them.

Buffalo dealt a recent 9OA who hadn't really done much to hurt his stock since being picked to get him.

I think we're starting with Schneider.

Drury wouldn't trade Schneider for JT Miller, I doubt highly he will deal him for an unsigned Ryan McLeod. I have to think the only reason McLeod would even be available is worry over his next contract. Sabres already have Tage and Cozens locked up down the middle. May not want to pay Mcleod as a top 6 guy.

my recollection of the 99 draft is that it was vey poor. Especially compared to 03. But yes add to the (insanely large) list of blunders by our beloved NYR lmao.
It was VERY poor. If they could have swung a trade to move up and grab a Sedin brother that would have been the move. Havlat probably the most valuable guy after that and he went way late.

Ok, but how long will it be until the next time he becomes disinterested or unmotivated? And none of us know for sure whether that was really the issue or if it was something nagging him physically or a combination of the two.

Sure it's great he looks rejuvenated, but the past 18 months of him being completely disengaged cannot be ignored. You can bring up his 70 points from last year, but this was not a guy who was driving play. He was & continues to be an enigma with his decision making & the issues he has handling the puck.

Also, if we're adding a winger, you have to be pretty f***ing good for me to choose you over putting Berard into whatever spot is available.

We need to just sink or swim with Berard in a legit top six role. The guy is the truth.
Vesey? ;)

I'm a bit surprised you mentioned top-6 and Berard at this point. He's barely had a handful of games that is not enough to make a call that he deserves a top-6 spot. It's as if you're making this call on Cuylle back in 2022-2023.

Some people were on Cuylle like this last season. Pepperidge farm remembers.

If there was a Kreider for Clarke type deal in place, I’d try to package Schneider for McLeod and Tuch somehow

Maybe save Othman for an elite talent add on..McLeod is a 3c free agent and getting a big raise

Othmann isnt getting you any elite talent. I think we'd be lucky to get a 25 year old 3C with playoff experience for him. Not to say I dont like him enough but he's not the type of prospect that is going to be the centerpiece in a blockbuster deal.
