If Rantanen wants to maximize his earnings he should probably sign a 1-2 year deal for a high AAV and then sign long term at that point when the cap is like 15-20M higher. Not like it's unheard of. Max Scherzer and Juan Soto did it recently in baseball. He's already made ~60M so he doesn't have the risk like a guy coming off ELC who could be left with minimal earnings if things gobad.
If that were the case, I'd be very interested in him from a Rangers perspective. He's much more valuable to us for 2-3 seasons than 8. Probably a lot of teams would see it that way too.
