I’ve been holding off commenting too much on the moves Drury has made since the Miller deal since that always seemed like the precursor for much larger-scale remodeling. I think he’s done a good job adding around the edges and bolstering the NHL depth where it’s needed.

The Peterka rumor is encouraging because they’re lacking that type of u25 offensive potential outside of Laf and Perreault. I still think the D needs another higher-end piece to give them a similar structure to how Tampa and Vegas built their backends. There's clearly more coming for the summer, but I’ll give Drury credit for at least making it interesting

laffy assy straight up for peterka would be drury’s biggest coup
Maybe it's Adam Fox. Frank Seravalli said Drury and the Rangers have put a significant offer on the table and had advanced discussions on Thursday about forward JJ Peterka. The Sabres want to acquire players who will help now and in the future. The Rangers gave Adams something to think about before he went to sleep last night.

A few months ago, Adams complained players don't want to play in Buffalo. They have no trade clauses. Buffalo doesn't have any palm trees. Fox doesn't have a restriction clause right now.

Drury puts his own imprint on the team.

Please trade Chris Kreider by 3pm. LA is looking for a forward. They were linked to Rantanen. Maybe Kreider is their guy.

They aren't trading Fox, IMHO. This is a Kreider + + deal, a LaF swap, or a KAM + swap. Buffalo has Dahlin @ 11M for the next three years. They aren't adding another offensive defensman @ 9.5.

If all of this is real I'd guess there are a few things holding it up.

This deal may be contingent on other things happening first/along side it and/or hammering out a new deal for Peterka before completing the trade.

The latter doesn't have to happen, but I'm sure they'd feel better about getting that done ASAP instead of letting it fester into the summer.

Or just keep him?

He's very good. Why would the Rangers trade for Rantanen when they can just take a run at signing him in a few months if they want to.
He is good. But the idea of flipping him would be to get Rantanen now and extended.

But DAL is doing this.

These rumors would have led with Fox, not Peterka if this were the case.

Like 7 days in a row with the Fox trade wake up call lol.

Drury better give us something big today after last night's cocktease

It won’t be Fox.

Trading Laf for Peterka would be a mistake. Dont give up on him yet. Not for Peterka. You want to include him in a package for a Brady Tkachuk, fine. But not JJ Peterka.

Meh. At this point it's a pretty even swap. LaFreniere has been pretty unimpressive this year when we all thought he took a step forward last year. He's regressed.

He would be a piece in a BT deal that would need A LOT more to land BT.

I think it's gonna be for Schneider+ if anything

I still like the Pavel Zacha idea. We need a center bad. Boston went on a spending spree last summer and now need the cap to sign Marchand, Geekie, Lohrei this summer. I know we want to send kreider there but it's hard for them from a cap perspective.

Othmann for Pavel Zacha?

I either package Laf + for Brady or I hope that the locker room and team atmosphere is vastly improved after the summer off then Laf returns to his form.

Dallas and Carolina had a deal in place for Rantanen, but Dallas couldnt work out an extension he'd be agreeable to. Now Dreger reporting the deal is off. This guy seems overly demanding. Thats 3 teams now that heavily value him and he couldnt agree with. He's overplaying his hand.

I dont think Rantanen is the problem here. He has zero incentive to sign now with the cap going up. The Canes just want him to so they can safe face on the trade return.

I don't want him for whatever he's going to end up getting. Save that cheddah for '26-27 when the big fish are better.

The rangers aren't going to build a stanley cup contender during one bad season. These are alot of deals that have have been made for one season. So far I like that for once we seem to have a plan outside of trading for rentals for a playoff push.

Its nice that we are moving guys we have no plans to resign for assest rather then self rent them.

Far too long we have built teams with nice pieces but never acquired players for roles. That seems to be the biggest change.

I pray this works out. I don't want to go through another rebuild with nothing to show after this one.

If I were in his shoes - I would just want the biggest contract of my career to be locked in. Freak injuries happen. It's always beneficial to get a deal locked in and signed as soon as possible. Your point is taken though, and if there are lets say 2-3 teams he's interested in and no where else, this is probably exactly how it would look.

I agree with you but he's also got the agent and NHLPA whispering in his ear. I think the Hurricanes have bungled this in everyway and I'm here for it. I dont want some team to bail them out. Dallas shouldnt give up Stankoven because they are being strongarmed into signing Rantanen when they may only want him as a rental.

They should trade Stankoven for Kreider instead

If Rantanen wants to maximize his earnings he should probably sign a 1-2 year deal for a high AAV and then sign long term at that point when the cap is like 15-20M higher. Not like it's unheard of. Max Scherzer and Juan Soto did it recently in baseball. He's already made ~60M so he doesn't have the risk like a guy coming off ELC who could be left with minimal earnings if things gobad.
