I like Georgiev better than Henrik right now which isn't to say that Henrik is playing bad.

I know some people don't want to go there but the Rangers like it or not are in the playoff hunt and a big part of why is Alex's goaltending. Right now we pro-rate to about a 94 point season and the team seems to me to be gradually getting better as the season goes along. I know the assumption is we're going to fall apart at some point but we need to see if this team can continue to improve. I looked at this West Coast trip by the way as the team needing to come away with at least 4 points and Vegas looked to me like the least likely to get us points but we got the two last night. If the Rangers come out with 6 or higher now that's a huge get of road points.

The power play has been good--take away the Tampa game where we gave up 5 power play goals and our penalty kill has been good--we're also leading the league in shorthanded goals. We have at least two lines that are dangerous--fact is 11 forwards and 4 defenseman have 3 or more goals before the 30 game mark. Our defense is very young and error prone but it is also leading the league in goals and maybe even points after last night. It's very active and it fits today's game.

We are also a gnarly bunch that back each other up. There's a lot to like about this team.

........and yeah we have nights where we'll awful but we're also seeing the team start to string together wins or at least standings points.

So the question of who we will move at the deadline is going to be conditioned on that. I expect Kreider will be one but Strome?--maybe not. As far as Georgiev if he continues as he is Igor's going to be in the AHL. Alex has outperformed Henrik (who has played well) all season.

The one thing I think about though in regard to our goaltending is if someone like Rask or Grubauer went down with a season ending injury and their teams came to us in desperate need of a goaltender to save their season because really I'm not moving Alex (or Igor) without getting a really great return and a late 1st rounder ain't enough or at least not enough for Alex.
I do not believe any deadline deals will be predicated on whether we're in the playoff hunt or not -- I do not see management making "go for it" (playoffs) moves....I see them sticking to "the plan."

I also don't think we'll see this team "fall apart", but come crunch time, I don't see us holding up as well as the other "contenders" when the games begin to tighten up. Right now, it's a 4 team race to reach the last spot....out of those 4 teams (Bolts, Habs, Laughs and us), I can't see us beating out TB. I also think the Habs will right the ship. One never knows what the Laughs will do....and I'm not counting out Columbus as yet.

Huska is a really solid goalie prospect, and he isn’t a dwarf like Shesty and Geo and Hank.

not sure about that. He’s big yet I’d question his reflexes when compared to these other guys. He takes up a lot of net yet a lot of big guys can do that. We’ll see

Which teams have terrible goalie situations, without a top prospect? Devils (not gonna happen), Kings, Sharks, Wings, maybe CBJ, who else?

Don't we always scout the hell out of the Kings? Get me my boy Kaliyev lmao

IMO, that Kaliyev is the type who bombs out and shows little in LA then suddenly reappears in Pitt where he nets 50 with Crosby. Let’s hope he doesn’t end up in Jersey.

Kaliyev does not strike me as someone that would work here at all.

Quinn would hate that kid, if his attitude issues are actually true

We're talking about taking on Kaliyev?

Jesus, if we're crapping on Kravtsov here, this kid would be brought through the sewage facility here.

The solution shouldn’t be move out Georgiev so Shev gets a shot as much as recognizing the problem is Hank is still here. Like Eli Manning, let’s get over the emotion and recognize you can’t move to the future until the past is left behind. You can’t have both

How do we move on from the past? Hank has another year left on his contract. Georgiev will be waiver eligible after he plays another 3 games. Shesty needs to play in the NHL so we can properly evaluate him.

That's 3 goalies who all need to play NHL games. Barring injury, how do we accomplish that? Are we carrying 3 goalies and rotating them all? Are we buying out Hank? Do we pressure him to accept a trade? Do we keep Shesty in the AHL all of next year?

If we trade Georgiev before we know for sure that Shesty can be a #1 at this level, then we run the risk of not having any starting goalie 2 years from now if Shesty flames out. If we trade Shesty before he proves himself, we won't get much in return and he could then turn out to be a steal for the other team.

There's just a lot of bad options here. My ideal scenario is that we have both Georgiev and Shesty as 1a/1b for a long time. I just don't know how we get there.

All the better--the more teams that stay in the race may coming knocking on our door.

I doubt TB will but CK has been mentioned to quite a few teams.

I don't see us trading multiple players but I don't want to see Kreider walk for nothing--that's why JG as to deal him somewhere.

My intuition continues to tell me that's the most likely scenario.

I do know the Rangers have flirted with the idea of getting Shesterkin some reps at the NHL level in the second half of the season, so we'll see how that plays out.

But Georgiev and Strome seem like off-season decisions.
It absolutely makes sense that Igor comes up and gets some game experience this season. His spots will be managed carefully though because even though this is still a build, the Rangers are in sight of playoff contention.

Im all for Jack Stud for Kreider but not at the expense of a 1st rounder. I would much prefer to get the Bruins 1st this year than Studnicka. If the offer is Jack + 2nd or a lesser prospect + 1st then I take the latter. We have to stop sleeping on this draft class. If I am the Rangers, I would like to try and do a Studnicka + 2020 1st if Kreider resigns. I dont see him walking away from his hometown.

I agree with a lot of this, eco's, but I'd tweak the perspective slightly: yes, they're on the cusp of a PO spot, but they're still on the outside looking in, and this is all pre-TDL moves. Even if they only move Kreider, that's still likely a hit – and even if you discount the possibility that they'll actively shop guys like Strome and Fast, there's the question of whether any of the true contenders makes an above-market offer to force your hand.

At the end of the day, play it straight, trade Kreider, listen on others, allow the team to gel – and don't let a chance at the POs factor into decision-making either way.

Then, sit back, enjoy the ride of this indeed very likable team, and approach this coming offseason as the last major inflection point in molding the core of what we hope will build toward a consistent contender during the 2020s.

What about Kreider + Howden for 2020 1st + Jack Studnicka no conditions on the pick? Jack is a right handed Center anyway with more offensive updside than Howden and can actually be a great 3C. Zib Chytil Stud Lias could be great Center depth. Or maybe even move Lias to wing.

Edit: I just realized Boston has no space. We could also take back Backes.

hate to say it but Hank needs to be bought out next year. At his age a buyout is 2/3rd the contract so that’s roughly over $5 million spread over two years. Now if Hank chooses to sign with a contender afterwards, that would be a big problem for me. If he wants to play for a contender then he should waive his N/T clause now rather than wait for a buyout.

Backes has another year left on his contract after this. That's a non-starter.

I think any Kreider trade will include an NHL player coming back, likely a young one, especially if the team is contending for a playoff spot.

What team is trading for him? Other teams can see the situation we are in with our goalies. If teams think we are going to buy Hank out, then they would just wait for that and sign him to a cheaper contract. There aren't going to be many teams lining up to sign him as most already have their starting goalie and/or aren't in a position where adding a 38 year old goalie makes sense. A few might be interested in adding him as an experienced backup, but none are going to pay big money to do it.

If we buy him out and he then signs with another team, do you expect him to pick a team that sucks? Why would you hold it against him if he signed with a contender? His first choice is obviously to stay with the Rangers. If we buy him out, we are taking that option away from him.

Didn't the Sharks and Sabres do it for Lehner and Jones?

Yup, and Schneider was traded for the 9th overall pick. If all teams are offering is a 2nd round pick, regardless of how high that pick is, they can go scratch. We may get to a point where we need to move Georgiev, but that time isn't now. If another team wants a goalie that can potentially be their starter for the next decade, they need to pay up.

I think that's a big reason why you're probably looking at a package deal, if/when that time comes.
I definitely think attaching Hajek or Howden ups the value enough. We'll see I guess. We have a long way to go til February and we know Gorton and Co are never in any rush.
