Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XV (Light em up!)

Cotter was 4th liner for the Vegas Cup team I believe. Similar player to Carrick imo. Which is a compliment.

I like Cozens. 23 year old with a 60 point season under his belt. Buffalo is an abject disaster. That team is what real player development problems look like. Not us who inject a rookie or 2 into the lineup every season.
we just have nothing to offer Buffalo for Cozens. If only Chytil weren't made of glass.

Or even Byram. what would we be willing to give up for either of them?

Hey, good on Brooksie for waiting a week and a half to take that idea I wrote about Bowness and just change the name around to make it seem different. At least everyone is finally realizing Housley is a problem.

Buffalo would ask for Schneider in a Cozens deal which is a non starter from the rangers probably. Byram idk. I think the Rangers could get him relatively painlessly but Im not sure I want another guy like Chytil. It's too big of a risk. We need a top D who can handle physicality.

My first impression of Bryam was Colorado cup run and he was really impressive. Maybe that skews my thinking on him but he’s been relatively healthy. Isn’t it concussion issues?

Believe so. Id want Byram as a Miller replacement if that was the path they took, rather than a Lindgren replacement. it's a meme but we do need a "Beukeboom" type to play with Fox. Someone who wont fall down if pressured and wont let teams take liberties with Fox or Igor.

If I had a Master Plan for a quick retool.

Blueprint: 2025

1a Goalie signed long.
2b Garand.
Garand needs to keep progressing as well as raise his eventual trade value and/or step in successfully is something happens to Igor

Make sure Igor understands, Garand is getting 20 strategect starts based on season match-ups.

Defence:
Fox, Schneider.
Borgen + Vaak as 3rd pair. Cheap, no-frills, not dog shit/not game breakers. Young vets, solid enough if top-4 gets fixed. #meatandpotatoes

Offence:
Trocheck (C), Cyulle, Berard, Edstrom, Rempe, Carrick.

*Lafrenierre: Keep. Unless, Tkachuk or comparable unubtanium player breaks loose.

*Chytil: Keep. Ride or die with Phil. Unless he is an ask in a package for CLEAR upgrade in PON.

*Panarin: Keep. Unless he brings back a package we cant resist or Blue Chip 2-way Defence prospect.

Everyone else, sell for cap space, draft picks, or package for Top 4 Defense, Kid or Vet.

We have the Goalies. We need to prioritize Defence for the Goalies and play a SOUND defence first system. We need 2 Top 4 Defenceman and at least 2 prospects with a 2-3 year projection.

Draft Center and Defence first two rounds, draft character, motor, IQ after that. We need a system of kids that can fill the bottom 6 and 4 over the next decade.

We have wingers on deck, we have half a top 12.

We are the New York Rangers. With cap space we have no problem filling holes with high price skill via UFA. But we need a core and replacement players developing.

My plan would be to use Kreider, Zib, Chytil*, Panarin*, Smith, K Miller, Lindgren to 1st priority upgrade D and D prospects, then second priority get draft picks and/or 3rd/4th line prospects that are projected to be killers in all 3 zones, or at least their half.

Use money to make High Skill/High Cap a "role" at as few positions as possible.

The Torts era squad was almost there. It didnt work forever because we stopped drafting fillers to replace Cally, Duby, G, Staal, Boyle, Prust, Klein, etc...we kept drafting boom/bust kids to supplant the high dollar skill guys.

Since we suck at drafting skill, then maybe we should rethink our team building strategy with a 5 and 10 year+ outlook.

I still like the idea of Miller for Mctavish. I'd be hoping for more coming back from Anaheim in that deal but that's the basis of a trade I would make. I think finding a good center is more important than fixing the defense, which I actually think could be improved quickly via UFA or shrewd trades for depth guys (see Vaak as an example).
Isn't Anaheim flush with defensemen/prospects? I don't see them adding another one.

I like it in theory but to your point about the defense, if we made a deal like this I don’t think you can solve the d-core with the Vaakaninens of the world, you’d have to pray that a Housely upgrade is what was needed on the back end.

Provorov
Walman
Chychrun
Pettersson
Gavrikov

do we just wait to throw a bag at Gavrikov?

It truly kills me watching Lindgren

He said "as of now" Mika has no interest in the West coast. Best case scenario for us is Mika keeping up the improved play.
cut his hair and train hard in the offseason.... that's would be our greatest outcome

i am not big on trade proposals

but saw note recently that Leafs seeking C w term

and then today a tweet they might offer Cowan (RW 28OA'23)

I consider something like
Zib for Tavares (rental, Cap balancing) plus Cowan and sweetener such as either of their pending RFA AHL Finnish Ds (Pack depth, and eventual chum for Vaisanan, he'll be there soon)

Could maybe flip JT at TDL to a contender, if he's willing

Tavares has a full NMC and grew up wearing Leafs pajamas. He will not be accepting a trade.
