He’d be a great partner for Fox. The good thing about UFA this upcoming offseason is there are 3 or 4 LHD who would be fine fits with Fox so that shouldn’t be an issue.
I think he defers to the vets still. And yes he has not been good this year and hasnt stepped up like i wanted him too. And defensively he is a wreck this year.
But i do think that given the opportunity and the old guard being outed he can find his voice and game. Playing with panarin is not easy, and he has for the most part handled it. Again, he is another player i think would do great if the team played a structured game.
We are just so disjointed.
And if he fails, he fails, but at least give him every opportunity to fail.

We can talk about the Rangers failing at drafting and developing talent, but we've heard this across various coaches/staff/etc.
At what level is this failure happening? If you look at our picks, FINDING the NHL talent isn't the failure. It's getting them to succeed for us and not elsewhere.
It's of note that Drury took on the role of player development starting in 2015, then assistant GM, then GM of Hartford.
Nov 2023 Athletic article has the Rangers at 9th in a list of best-drafting teams since 2014.
Now, one thing to add here -- 2020 was a very good year for us and wasn't reflected in this chart - Laf, Schneider, and Cuylle are all NHL regulars with Rempe, Berard, and Garand on track to carve out roles. Current projections? Maybe just one or two guys in the years since.
But still--eyes on Drury. I appreciate that he has taken some guys to task, but beyond that, evidence points to a good deal of culpability on him for the failures.

November 25-29 - Kreider missed 3 games with an upper body injury
December 23 - Kreider is a "healthy" scratch
January 5 - Kreider misses 1 game with an upper body injury
January 7 - Kreider goes on IR with an upper body injury
And here I was thinking firing Jim Ramsey would solve the issue of players playing through injuries.

Would definitely like to see if he has it in him to lead....I also think the young guys we have will step up as the old guard moves on.
Cant agree more about being disjointed....absolutely no structure out there. Reminds me of when Espo took over coaching this team in the mid-80's....his idea of practices was throwing some pucks on the ice and telling the guys to go at it....

The Rangers are terribad at developing star talent because we let that talent waste away on the third line.
Every other team takes those high end draft picks and throws them to the wolves with lots of ice time, playing them in all situations.
Hockey is different here, and instead we sign UFA's and leave the top draft picks to play 5min a night and scratch them when they make mistakes.
That's the difference.
Fox came here and succeeded because he was our best dman from the jump. He didnt' play 5 min a night on the third pair for 3 of his most important development seasons.

I think the players have been making these decisions for awhile. It's part of the culture. Why else would a hampered Strome in 22 and a hampered Trouba in 24 not only didnt come out of the lineup at all, but played their usual roles. Both guys killed us trying to be #warriors.

I'm very surprised Reilly Smith isn't on that list. As we get closer to the deadline and this team is still out of it, I have to imagine they will look to move him.

Id talk extension with Borgen if the price is right. But that's not stopping me from trading him if a 2nd or *gasp* a 1st is on the table.
Smith has been good all year. The healthy scratch he got from Laviolette was another example of protecting the sacred cows.
Also our off ice support seems to be putrid outside of Quick and Trocheck.
Nobody wants to lead and help along kids and youth.
Hell even Crosby lived with Lemiuex. And u can bet your ass that helped him alot. Not in the sense that he would have failed, but in the sense he fulfilled his total potential bc he had guidance and support from one of the very best.
We let kakko rot on his own bc our “leaders” dont actually lead and take care of the youth.

Meanwhile Montreal played Slafkovsky 12:13/game in his rookie year with his most common center Jake Evans. And Jack Hughes got less 5v5 time/game than Lafreniere did in their respective rookie seasons. Yes, he got more PP time but he was hardly given a big role at 5v5.
Joe Thornton and Nino Niederreiter are the obvious guys who were bad/barely got any ice time their rookie years. Didn't hurt them.

If Drury trades a first this years or next years this TDL, and it somehow becomes a top 10, then this franchise deserves every bit of shade its fans, the media, and rival teams fans throw.
Drury and Dolan should be locked in a port-a-potty, set on fire, and pushed over a cliff.

It's a nonsense narrative. Some players will succeed with a big role their rookie year. Some won't. Some will succeed in the future with a limited role their rookie year. Some won't.
