"Every other team"

Meanwhile Montreal played Slafkovsky 12:13/game in his rookie year with his most common center Jake Evans. And Jack Hughes got less 5v5 time/game than Lafreniere did in their respective rookie seasons. Yes, he got more PP time but he was hardly given a big role at 5v5.

Joe Thornton and Nino Niederreiter are the obvious guys who were bad/barely got any ice time their rookie years. Didn't hurt them.

Jack hughes got two minutes more a game than laf in their respective rookie seasons. Hughes played terrible too his rookie year.

Next year hughes was bumped up to 19 min a game while laf stayed at 14. He was also stapled to top line and top PP the entire time.

they were not remotely given the same opportunities.

In fact not till Lafs 4the season did his ice time beat Hughes’ rookie year. And he still got no PP time. To help.

I know people would like a fire sale in some ways and I'm not against good fair value trades but keep in mind we still have to ice a team next season and we don't have much ready on the farm. We can't just ice a team of rookies.

I personally would move around 4-6 of our forwards and 1-3 of our Dmen.

If we fire sale then in the offseason just sign some placeholder vets that you know u can jettison via trade.

Next season is going to be a punt season no matter what

November 25-29 - Kreider missed 3 games with an upper body injury
December 23 - Kreider is a "healthy" scratch
January 5 - Kreider misses 1 game with an upper body injury
January 7 - Kreider goes on IR with an upper body injury

And here I was thinking firing Jim Ramsey would solve the issue of players playing through injuries.
Hey Chris do you want to go on IR?

“No thanks ”

The players call the shots we always knew this

Lindgren coming back early from every injury. Hmmmm I wonder if that had any long term effects on him? Real stumper there. Trading a second for a clearly injured Kane. The players call the shots always.

No. Brooks is asking why the Rangers made a point of saying that it was a healthy scratch instead of attributing it to his back issue. Why put that information out there? Why give the perception that it's something other than health?

Maybe they were trying to downplay the health issue but implying that there is a reason other than health doesn't exactly help his trade value either.
The team was playing like shit and he was playing like shit and keeping it in house has been doing f*** all. That's why.

Laf did not display 1st line talent until like... Year 4. No successful individual elite skill plays because he was too slow and not shifty enough. No rushes, no inside outs, no elite skill plays other than saucer passes. That's just the fact of it.

He has the opportunity to do that every shift. He didn't because he couldn't. He does it occasionally now because he skates better now. QED.

edit: Found an April 2022 goal where he did a pretty great move with a ton of open ice 2 on 2. Fair is fair. Still wasn't very many of those moments for literal years.

Are you saying that since 2021, we have only drafted 1 or 2 guys who might become NHL regulars? Or am I misinterpreting what you are saying?

Apologies. That's my mistake.

I had just meant that since 2021, we haven't had any NHL regulars to date but have a few in the pro leagues. I haven't followed our prospects enough in recent years to be able to estimate if they're likely to be NHL players.

I think Othmann (2021), Sykora (2022), Mancini (2022), Perreault (2023), and Fortescue (2023) look to all be on that trajectory from what I have read here/seen reported (or seen in the NHL or preseason).

Anything else with guys like Emery, Boilard, Aspinall, Lamb, Laba, BMB (who look to be doing well so far!) would just be stat-watching and wouldn't reflect any kind of overall assessment of their play.

I wouldn't want to share my unfounded opinions on them without having looked into it a bit more.

He’s scored that sweet goal against Detroit

I haven’t seen Hartford at all, but bmb is having a good year? I’m happy to hear that, and a little surprised. I kinda figured he would stall out as he didn’t exactly have the best year last year.

My opinion:

The Rangers are terribad at developing star talent because we let that talent waste away on the third line.

Every other team takes those high end draft picks and throws them to the wolves with lots of ice time, playing them in all situations.

Hockey is different here, and instead we sign UFA's and leave the top draft picks to play 5min a night and scratch them when they make mistakes.

That's the difference.

Fox came here and succeeded because he was our best dman from the jump. He didnt' play 5 min a night on the third pair for 3 of his most important development seasons.

You're right on that point.

When you have an owner and GM who just want to be perennial contenders (or at least pretend they are), it's hard to work in a true top-6 talent and give them the space they need to fulfill that potential at the NHL role. The Detroit teams of a few years ago were always quite good at that, and it's why they were able to be a constant threat in the playoffs.

The Rangers would like to follow that in theory, but management has failed at it in practice.

I do believe it's important for a player to learn all facets of the game, so I'm not opposed to a young player in a different role to have that experience and maybe get a different look at the pro game, but ideally you want your potential top-6 guys in top-6 roles as soon as possible.

We're also dealing with human beings, so it can be a very player-specific process.

I don't think he's having a great year statistically. 10 points in 28 games doesn't stand out, but I thought he was playing a more complete game (and was projected to be more of a 2-way guy). In his defense, he is just 20, and this is his first pro year.

I could be wrong--as I said, really just stat-watching and reading here. Having a +2 on Hartford looks okay when Chmelar is a -17.

it'd take a 1st
I'm willing to move a 1st if he's extended.

There's a quantity element to draft picks -- you can't trade all of them.

However, individual draft picks are severely overvalued. There's a 50% chance that even a first rounder is a complete non-asset.

If you have a return you're confident in, and it's a long-term (not a rental), you trade the pick for it.

This also isnt a rebuild despite what some people want. Im all for making another top 5 or top 10 pick this summer if thats where we fall, but hoarding firsts isnt going to help us any time in the next 3 years. The team is going to be going for it from day 1 next season. Their available assets (cap space and futures) should be going toward fixing the defense. it's also the reason the JT Miller rumors will persist. The Rangers dont care that he's 31 because they want a veteran to lead the group of young players, especially as Kreider, panarin and hopefully Mika are moved out over the next year and a half.

1/7/25 SHITSHOW!

Rangers are 7th in the Metro. Tied with the Isles with 37pts.
The team is 19 pts behind the Caps who are 1st in the Metro.
The team is only 4 pts out of the #2WC spot in the Eastern Conf.
The team is 2pts ahead of the last place Sabres in the Eastern Conference.
By their record they are the 7th worst team in the NHL

MSG and Optimum are at a standoff so 4.6 Million Subscribers in NY can't watch MSG.

There is no clear and concise direction as to what the club is going to do. 2 Days ago Emily Kaplan wrote that Laviolette and Drury still have support from Ownership and will continue to "re-shape" the roster. The one small tidbit from a legitimate beat writer is this “A common theme for any players brought to the Rangers is going to be physicality. Meat and potatoes is a term I’ve heard the Rangers’ front office has used a lot lately.”

Forbes #2 Ranked organization is flatlining, and the brass at the top doesn't even address the media? 1.4 Million fans in the tri state alone. By 2023 attendance 732,000 people.

How is it that we have to just play guessing games on everything? Time for Drury to address the media. It's beyond rediculous!

Hughes is clearly a better player but there is merit to this argument IMHO

Honestly in hindsight have been best if both Kakko and Laf started out in the AHL and dominated there first. The what ifs are thick and strong
