The priority for me is getting a sniper on the right wing of that line, rather than upgrading Strome.

Even a Prucha/Cheechoo/Moulson type that really only know how to score could pot 40 goals on that line.

I agree, been saying that for a while, we need someone to grab that spot, imagine if that line had a shooter on the right side. Hopefully Kakko can join the top 6 soon.

Also, some great examples of Dumb Hockey Nicknames: Kinger, Janner, Garts... Though Jeep is a *bit* better. I wonder what they called Mallette? Probably "Troy-y".
While I am not sure what his nickname was....I had a childhood friend last name Mallet and we always called him The Hammer . He was somewhat slow...albeit no fault of his own but he loved the nickname in our ball hockey games and cow pasture baseball games. It's a slow Sunday and I'm reminiscing.....

Yeah for sure, but I don't think the real issue is whether Strome could center a top 3 line with Panarin for us in NY. It is that we will have cap causalities here in NY, and if we keep Strome we will lose someone else.

Ziba got 2 years left than he is a UFA. We don't have a single good long-term contract on the books. In the Cap era NHL, the hard part is not to get hold of talent, its about having good contracts.

It's not like he is gonna sign for 8 million, if you get a player to produce 60-70 points no matter if he is playing with Panarin for 4 to less than 5 mill that's good value. For me it's a 2-3 year 4.5, then you decide on him then. Hank, Smith, Staal, etc all gone by then. I still believe his point totals can get higher with a capable scorer on the right side who can free up ice for Panarin and him, most of the time Panarin was getting double teamed and Fast was pretty much being left alone.

i'm sure that winters in edmonton aren't the greatest but that is also an excuse for why they can't get players. the bigger issue is that the team has sucked for 30 years more or less and despite getting countless top picks they continue to stink...why would players want to live there and also miss the playoffs? if the oilers were good I think more players would be open to it as an option.
For sure. I was simply speaking to the cities themselves rather than the organizations. Obviously they're both huge factors in the decisions. But I think a lot of the "he won't play in Edmonton" or other less-cosmpolitan cities, is mostly based on the city itself. But even a place like Columbus gets that tag and they're quite well-run. But, for sure, everything gets factored-in.
Personally, it seems to me most of these cities are starting to look the same anyhow.

There's still plenty of history for that. Vic Hadfield with Gilbert and Ratelle. Clark Gillies with Trottier and Bossy. John LeClair gets to play with Eric Lindros. Kevin Stevens with Mario Lemieux. Graves with Messier. Nylander with Jagr. Jake Guentzel and Bryan Rust with Crosby and Malkin respectively and Tom Wilson on a line with Ovechkin.

I wouldn't run down Miller for getting a chance with Pettersson or Strome with Panarin. Both of them have gotten an opportunity and run with it.
I wouldn’t even lump Guentzel into that group tbh. He’s legit, with or without Crosby. But that’s a debate for another day.

I think that spot eventually goes to Kakko but I don’t actually think a sniper is what they need. I think they’d be much better served by a Tom Wilson, Matt Tkachuk, prime-Lucic type. Or even a Brayden Schenn. Someone who can bulldoze guys in the corners, in front of the net and on the walls and dominate possession, create a lot of space for the other two and still chip in 20-30 goals.

But the spot will become Kakko’s so going out and spending externally to fill it doesn’t make any sense to me. Just have to be patient.

shame Quickie isn't offensively gifted, cuz he's the guy. the sole reason Derek Stepan was able to score that OT goal, Fast helped him win the faceoff.

His game is the right fit. Imagine if he had that 20-30 goal, 55 point acumen AND 2 more inches and 20 more pounds. I would covet that player for our top line far more than a sniper right now.

If we accept that it’s Panarin and Strome and we’re looking for a RW, I’d take a Matt Tkachuk over a Kyle Connor. Connor had 15 more goals and 12 more points, but I just don’t think it’s all about points. First, I think Tkachuk produces more on a line with Panarin, but more importantly it’s the overall impact on the game and the line and the locker room. I’d kill to have Matt Tkachuk on that top line.
