The funny thing to me is all the people assuming Hank would be okay with playing backup. He has made it clear he believes he is a starter and has no desire to be a mentor.
New York Rangers: Henrik Lundqvist's Strict Mentoring Role Has Begun

The King does, indeed, have value and a new, important role added to his famous resume. He’s become a mentor to the Russian duo of Georgiev and Shesterkin. Not just a player to ask questions, but someone who’s been in the same situations for 882 games.
With the unusual announcement that the team would go with a three-goalie rotation two weeks ago, Hank has been mentoring the goalies more than he’s shown them what to do during live games.

Lindgren is closer to being an AHL dman than he is a quality first pairing dman.

Nah, Lindgren was probably the most improved player before last season.

I think that it kind of went under the radar because it coincided with him going from the AHL to the NHL. But the kid is in sick physical shape. So slimmed down. Moves a lot better.

I think that he is a solid NHL D for sure.

His results were pretty bad with pretty much all partners. I know why people like him. He’s like Girardi except he’s not a shot blocker. He’s tough, he’ll play in front, and he plays your classic mean game. He could be a solid third pairing dman who PKs. He’s nowhere even close to being a first pairing guy.

Yeah I think we pretty much agree about him. For sure not a top guy. I just think that he was significantly behind Hajak a year ago, but leap frogged him during the summer. I think that he went from someone on the outside looking in to someone that definitely is on the inside. But high up the rank? That is another issue.

Lundkvist for Mittlestad?

On the trade board, most of the Buffalo fans seem to think Puljujarvi for Mittelstadt is fair, maybe with a small add.

...why would we consider trading Lundkvist for that?

Where have you seen him say ANYTHING about not wanting to be a mentor? They sat him for a full month (either to force his hand or to showcase Georgiev) and he didn't make a peep about it. I've never heard a player say anything negative about him as a teammate.
At what point did I say people said anything negative about him. I remember he mentioned in an interview, which I am looking for, that he said he is not looking to be a mentor. He views himself as the starter. That isn't selfish in the least. He is a competitor. Competitors don't willingly step aside if they think they can do the job. Not should they. That is up to management. Hank is a complete pro and class individual. He will not handle this in a poor way. He will do and say the right things. I highly doubt that he will sign on as a backup. I think that when his contract is up, he will see what the Rangers have in mind and decide if that fits his idea. My guess is that, if they don't buy him out, he finishes his contract and retires. If he plays more, it will be as a starter in Sweden with his brother.

It basically comes down to whether Hank wants another contract after this one whether he accepts a trade or not. He has to know that being the back up or worse 3rd goalie on this team won't do much to encourage a team to take a chance on him. If he wants to continue his career he needs to be moved to a team that needs a starter, if he is planning on retiring next year than expect him to be here and Georgiev to be on the move. I'm not a fan of option B but the management team has back filled our goalie prospect pool so that we can move him and still have someone to be a number 2 behind Shesterkin a year from now.

No

Seriously?

Yup, I think Mittlestad is on the verge of breaking out. It’s not an easy league for a young forward and he is very talented.

I also think that he is exactly what we need. Speed and skill and playmaking ability. Sure he got things to figure out, but we have guys to teach him. Very mobile. That low gravity skating. I also think that many of our other players really need someone like tbat, to get them the puck. Kakko is a perfect example. He must get a Sakari Manninen in the NHL too. I am blown away by Zibas development — but facts are that Ziba has been nothing but destroyed against Boston’s top line and many other top guys (like McD). They are good lines, but you don’t have to be destroyed by them. The problem is just that a big body like Ziba takes time to change direction — and a line like that exposes that.

I like Nils, but he isn’t the second coming and we don’t have room for him. I don’t buy the notion that things might work out somehow.

I want to implement a litmus test that we never should deviate from with a young kid. Draw up two universes. One where a kid is put in the best possible situation develop in. The other being the one we are in right now. If those two aren’t mirror images of each other you should pull out. Cut ties with the kid. Deal him for future assets. ;)

Ok, maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration. But seriously. For every TDA that can make it despite worst possible conditions, you will ruin 9 others that are served crap daily. We don’t have a good environment to develop Lundkvist in. Deal him.

Maybe Hank wants the Cup? He shows up for camp in a few weeks having been on ice without a break working hard since March. Could definitely see him getting the nod or at least a shot. Go out with a bang.

Those videos he sends out, it’s just to pressure his teammates. Like last summer. Anyone not showing up in top shape should feel really rotten. Peer pressure.
