Henrik Lundqvist: ”Jag vet inte om jag blir kvar i Rangers”

Wonder if this means he'd accept a trade to a cup contender? Have to think there would be a team willing to take a chance on it.

Which cup contender doesn't have good to great goaltending? If they already have that why would they gamble on a 38 year old who arguably is declining and has a pretty big $8.5 mil cap hit? Take Tampa for instance--is he going to displace Vasilevskiy? or Rask in Boston? Holtby in Washington? Maybe I guess San Jose or Calgary but they might not have the cap space let alone the inclination to take on a 38 year old.

Henrik's probably been talking to Zucc though so I'm not surprised at all because Zucc probably told him 'hey, it's not as bad as you think playing in another city for a team that's actually good right now'.

But anyway I think it might be too late. I also think if it did happen--don't be surprised if the return doesn't look very good--the acquiring might already think they're risking too much as it is. IMO if we got a late 1st we'd be doing really well.

100% agreed, I expect the return to be underwhelming.

The real return would be cap space and a chance for Hank to a win a cup.

My preference would be to continue to tear it down and get lafreniere or byfield or whatnot and then build it from that point.

1 more year of sucking really seems like the ideal way to do this.
Exactly. We've suffered and come this far... why do anything but stay the course?

There's something valid and tangible at the end of this process. Contentions status for more than one year and a team that is built with timing in mind, instead of trying to accelerate the way we did for Hank.

Columbus would be a possibility for Lundqvist. Bob is leaving. Korpisalo isn’t the answer. I am assuming that they will still be a competitive playoff team after the Russians leave in free agency. They will have a lot of money to play with this summer. Does Hank want to play for Tortorella again?

This part is total news to me:
”Jag vet inte om jag blir kvar i Rangers hela karriären. Jag har två år kvar på kontraktet och det har alltid varit mitt mål att vara kvar i Rangers. Men när man kommer upp i åren vet man aldrig. Jag har en egen agenda, men vill klubben något annat så får jag vara lyhörd för det. Det går inte bara att köra sitt eget race. Det är inte alltid drömmen är realistisk, vi får se hur det blir. Nu fokuserar jag allt på VM, säger Henke. ”

”I am not sure if I will be a Ranger my whole career. I have two years left on my contract, and my goal has always been to stay a Ranger my entire career. But you never know when you get older. I have my own agenda, but if the club wants something else I must listen to that. You cannot just do things your own way. The dream might not always be realistic, we will have to wait and see. My focus now is on the WCHs.”

Nobody is taking Hanks contract nobody. I’m really hoping he retires after this season.

Don't agree. There's only two years left and we could retain on it. And unlike a Lucic, Hank is still a difference maker with a decent D in front of him. I could see a team like Calgary being very interested. Especially with their current construction.

That said, if Hank were traded it would be at next TDL at the earliest. We really need to see what Igor looks like first and how well Georgi is if given a larger bulk of the responsibility.

At next year's deadline, in addition to Calgary, there will be other teams who are either a) suddenly in contention or b) dealing with a goalie injury/uncertainty. Avs? CBJ? PGH? San Jose? Dallas? Carolina? And it could be a first rounder + prospect type deal. Which, at that point of Hank's career, I would be happy with. It could help us with the last round of the rebuild. Add in potential first for Zucc and possibly something back from a Kreider deal. 2020 draft could be just as big if not bigger than this year.

A lot depends on how Shesty comes in and performs. Neither him or Georgiev have proven their worth over time. Obviously, Georgiev has the advantage over Shesty at first, and Shesty will have to earn a spot.

He understands whats starting to happen here with the signing of Shesterkin, but still a lot of unknowns at this point. It's Hank's helm to lose, and I really believe he will play out the remainder of his contract and ride off into the sunset. There really are too many variables and things that could change things at this point. Going to be interesting to see how it all plays out.

I think that people are seriously underestimating what it means to Henke to retire as a Ranger, having played his entire career here. He has a young child, loves being in NY.....not really seeing him suddenly change his mind.

I agree. But I'm going to assume he does change his mind: what contending team has the need and the cap space to add him?

You guys are going to think I’m crazy, but how about Lundqvist at 50% to...The Leafs. More salary would have to be exchanged of course.
